the crackdown is only 3 months in duration, aimed at 'obscene' sex shows... which basically means any girl that is topless or worse.... so if you're chillin at beer bars, MP's, discoes, you're cool... even if you're chillin at gogos with no topless, you're cool.... if you have a little cash and you're at a fancy establishment, you're more than cool.... if you have the phone number of a madame who can get you any girl in any magazine you see in thailand to include penthouse, you're even cooler, cuz ladies like these work for politicians as well...

If it reduces the Benidorm amd Faliraki set that seem to have just discovered the place all the better.
One character last month was standing by Cathouse in NEP spraying beer at the people on the stairs. Now I can think of a lot of things to do in NEP besides spraying beer. I would imagine that someone would get annoyed chase up to the bugger and send the drunk sprawling ? Ensuing fight with his mate joining in and then it becomes commonplace. What next ? Club 18-30 vomit competitions in the hotel swimming pool ? Well that's the type of character that follows on. It won't be messrs Purachai at al who spoil your fun but an influx of the worst type of lager lout when they realise that the price is much the same as Faliraki.
Learning Thai ?
Best advice possible and if it opens a whole new world there are certain rewards. It will also distance you from the 'vomit-merchants' who see LOS as an alternative to the places they have spoiled in Europe?

I am unfortunately locked into my trip plans taking effect next week for BBK. I would rather go at another time.
But I feel its only the packaging that has changed. Insde the package the product is the same.
There will not be as much pre-purchase sizzle that we are used to, but I am sure (well I hope) that the contents that are now unfortunately covered by government approved
packaging will remain as 'desireable' as ever.
f_ck the packaging...or rather, you don't f_ck the packaging!
So I am going to think of it as a "generic packaging policy'.
Sort of like 'No Name Products'
In Shanghai, Apec was used to clean the streets so to speak. For Asian countries its a big show, APEC.
Crack downs are part of the social order as it was in NYC.
But it will never be consistant.
Because we P4P but the girls W4L (Work for a Living).
And that is always a constant.

Does it change the 'atmosphere' for good ?
Will it take the 'buzz' out of the place ?
I have noticed a 'fun' decline even since 2001 ?
Others who hope for the 'not-so-nice' tourist to go away may have identified what is spoiling the party ??
I think the more experienced and more knowledgeable members need to add the input on this one?

I think ThaidUp describes things pretty well. Business in the bars is slow (what's new since the SARS scare?), the girls are covered up and the crasser sex shows are off limits.
All in all, it feels very much like a similar 'crackdown' in force during the first half of last year. Of course, that one gradually disintegrated as these things always do in LOS. Shit, even the elephants (banned from BKK for months) are now beginning to creep back onto Suk and Silom.
So what's the big difference? In the GGs, most of the girls used to dance topless (not nude), now they keep their tops on. Usually. Naked dancing is a lot rarer than it was, and 'showing' is a little more subtle. Usually. The ping-pong type shows that hardly anyone likes anyway are off for the moment. How sad.
That's about it. Not really that much different from usual, truth be told, and no hardship for anyone who doesn't absolutely need to be surrounded by naked tits. To be honest, I've probably grown so accustomed to the latter that I hardly notice and don't care whether they're wearing tops or not (OK, fair enough, I'm a leg man).
Nothing to get upset about and it won't last anyway.
