The thai entertainment industry is pehnomenally lucrative and it has been well reported over the past decade that the Thai economy depends on sex tourism with its net income standing at around two thirds of the national budget. Asking if Farang tourist industry are important to thailand is like saying the coffee indusry is not important to columbia.

Tourists (most of them) are away from their country and on holiday often like the choice to stay up in 'the wee small hours'. Sending negative statements out about a country will frighten them off as usually it doesn't take much.
If Chairman Thaksin wants to improve the youth of Thailand he should give them a half decent education then they could make their own choices which would probably include Not voting for the individual in question. On one of his jaunts to Europe where he vows to buy a football team then ends up doing bugger all the Chairman should have a stopover in Spain and Portugal where he will see even young kids staying up to the 'wee small hours'. It's never done them any harm and neither does harm to the locals as they know how and when to enjoy themselves without some berk of a politician in a safari suit telling them how to. Lack of education is political, clamping down on bars is political.
The Tourists will do what they always do i.e.Vote with their feet !.
Arcadius is most likely correct when he says "Squish the balloon at one end, and it'll just expand somehere else. " It will expand, but not in Thailand. They are going lose some money at this rate. There are other countries !

In one of the latest issues of the Economist, a report on changes in policy on prostitution by the current government leadership in Thailand, suggested that the P4P (not their words) industry accounted for 'approximately' 10% of the nations GNP. That 10% also accounting for business associated with and benefiting from indirect connections.

The article also implied a lack of factual, statistical data because of the illegal nature of the industry.

i.e It's difficult to tax and therefore a heinous crime !

P.S. I have read that the IRS is a private organisation and some Americans have taken them to court questioning their legality to tax. And won !
Anybody know it this is true ?

Smegma,

Off the top of my head. The Rough Guide to Thailand, 4th edition, 2001 by Paul Gray and Lucy Rideout. p 158.
:
This was based upon a Chulalongkorn Univeristy study

Night Market: Sexual Cultures and Thai Economic Miracle, Ryan Bishop and Lillian S Robinson. 1998 1st edition.

Im just repeating what Ive read If Thailands sex industry only accounts for 3% of its economy then its still 3% ($4.3 billion)...a lot of money to be lost in terms of a countries economy. The sex industry contribution to the thai economy I would imagine is very hard to estimate but to think that its removal would not affect thai people or its economy (even slightly) is narrow minded. Sex tourists and normal tourism alike is often linked very closely (Amsterdam, Prague etc). Sex tourists spend money on more than just sex when visiting Thailand. All Thailand will end up doing is displacing this to other surrounding countries.

The sex tourists Ive met around Thailand in the large majority have all been extremely nice people, friendly to Thai people and respectful of their culture. Ive travelled all around Europe, South America and Asia and not all 'normal' tourists are this nice so I would ask "Why would Thailand want to put these people off from visiting?"

H..exactly right, which means lost tax dollars which maybe the LOS government is salavating for. (Maybe? Did I write that?).

Imagine getting a receipt, showing the tax you paid after your bar fine? Or the BG getting out her receipt book and itemizing your received services and the tax applicable?

I am amazed at the amount of BS you can read on the same topic all around the Web.

Once for all, Thailand (relative) wealth does not depend on Sex Tourism whatsoever.
The Economic reality is a country which GDP lrelies on Private comsuption/investment, export of goods (For Labor intensive work).

Tourism is contributing 5% to GDP out of which Sex Tourism is in the vicinity of 0.5 to 0.7% (I would agree that it is difficult to give a right estimation as the border is difficult to draw as to what should fall into this category).

Export of goods is a great example and illustrate very well why the current economic situation is so good. Thailand is indeed the largest exporter to china and one of the last to the US which explain why Thailand does follow the Chinese growth much better than the other surronding countries.

As a good example, CP group is the largest producer of Chiken and shrimps in the World. Its Chairman and founder was named one of the 10 Most influancial person in the world but Fortune few months ago.

I can understand that cheap Sex Tourist that Hardly spend 2000 Bath a night are mad with the Social Order Crusade but We don't need you ! Stay home thanks !
I have been enjoying Thailand for the last 8 Years and the less I see cheap sex tourist hanging around Sukhumvit the better.

I am supportive with the GOuvernement when its trying to stop Rich Thai kids shooting each other in front of night clubs because they are from different schools. This being said I dont think that the 1 AM closing time will help.

My little 2 bath worth,

Seth

power24,
You are hallucinating if you really believe that sex tourism accounts for 66% of the Thai economy, and your references are total crap if that is indeed what they say (I sincerely doubt it).
ALL tourism accounts for only somewhere in the 10% range of the national economy, and that is according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (and according to common economic sense, given Thailand's vast agricultural, industrial, and other services sectors). And sex tourism is only a fraction of the total, bro.
Now if you said that sex tourism accounts for 66% of the budget of most of the brothers here I could relate to that (66% may actually be a bit low).

Again Ciao, I repeat what Ive read. If anyone has a copy of this rough guide (with the university study in it) they could back me up. Whether it be fact or not. The sums didnt make sense to me when I read them but as I said above even at under 10% of the Thai economy this would represent an important contribution and therefore potential loss to the thai economy.

getting back to my original point is whether people agree that the 1am closing is the first step in many towards n eventual closing down of this industry.
