Quote: from Yurune on 12:09 am on April 29, 2004 Hermanolobo No it doesn't, in fact I didn't even think Songkhla was a majority Muslim province. My understanding was that the three Muslim dominated provinces were Naratiwat, Yala and Pattani, doesn't even extend as far north as NST.
So it is really well south ? I've seen mosques in Phuket,Krabi and Bangkok. Do you know how large the muslim population is in these areas?

Well the number in the thread title is a little short no matter who you read.........and the word 'killed' now should be replaced with 'slaughtered' regardless of politics or religion.

FM, I totally agree with your last point... The "rebels" were teens 15-20 years and if they were more than 100, they had less than a dozen of guns.....saw on Thais TV pictures of the bodies of these teens carrying only a stick or similar.....Thai Army went down very hard this time....

Hermie Apart from the three Muslim-dominated provinces right by the Malaysian border, there are are many Muslims elsewhere in the South, often in concentrated pockets (particular villages, etc). For example, Koh Yao Noi in Phang Nga bay is an entirely Muslim island. If you take the coastal road from Phuket to Ranong (a crossing point to Burma), you see far more mosques than temples once past Khao Lak. This is a long way north of Malaysia.

Hermie, The Muslim section of BKK is also centered aroung Soi Pra Khanong and Suan Luang. My TGF lives in that area. We hear the call to prayer from the nearby mosques everyday (and early in the morning -- sometimes seems like the speakers are outside our window when the wind blows in the right direction, lol). Reminds me a little bit of waking up in Istanbul. On my TGF's little sub-Soi is a tiny roadside eatery run by a Thai Muslim couple. The husband doesn't look particularly Thai, but hard to place where he is from. Very sweet people, I do my morning khao pad gung there. - Balls

Most of the suicide bombers in the middle east are teen agers or those barely out of their teens. They can still kill civilians, regardless of their age. These guys were sent to their death by a zealot somewhere. They were armed militants regardless how many weapons they had. They were prepared to kill security forces and others to further their cause. Should the security forces have taken it easy on them because they were outgunned? I think not. The Thai Army is now claiming they were fundamentalists and not bandits, according to CNN. The vast majority of the Islamic people are peace loving and wish to cause no problems. It is the fundamentalists that cause the problems.

It seems peace loving Kumbayah Patriots ignore what expatchuck just pointed out - namely, that many suicide bombers are teens. Also seem to forget that youths on motorcycles, armed with 'only' machetes killed a few monks not so long ago. Furthermore, I couldn't agree more regarding the fundamentalists/extremists - these people were armed, they were rushing armories and military posts in order to acquire more weapons, and they are undoubtedly being lead by someone out to take advantage of illiterate, uneducated youths that are easy to manipulate. Damn right the army is coming down hard and fast on them - here's hoping that plenty more of them get slaughtered (an appropriate word, as it goes well with for cattle) until this stops. When all's said and done, I'm willing to bet that we will find out that some outside influences will be at the core.

Hermanolobo. It depends on where, the two posts above (arcadius and ballsburstin) provide most of what I would have answered. There are mosques and Muslims all over Thailand, they number about 4% of the population. Phuket has many mosques but is not a majority Muslim province, I was just expressing surprise that Songkhla was listed as one. I also lived in the Muslim area of Bangkok, I used to walk through a Muslim school every day, several Osama Bin laden T shirts on view, but usually greeted with a smile and a wave from the kids. BallsBurstins GF could have been a neighbour of mine.

Personally with regard to yesterdays developements, if there is no outside infleuence from JI or Al Queda to date, there will be now. I'd say Thailand has now made itself a major target.
