IMO:

"IF" China invades Taiwan, the U.S will puff up it's chest, but no action will be taken. They are spread to thin with the middle east and possibly North Korean on the for front. And, China is a super power that I think the U.S would not want to tangle with. I should say, no super power wants to dance with one another.

And China doesn't want to tangle with The USS Enterprise.

China is a dangerous beast now armed with lots of US$$$. US is in a dilema whether to stand up to China or not because it loses either way. The only hope for Chinese democracy comes from within. The severe division between the coastal ( the prosperous) and the inland ( the improvish) provinces, the division between the poor and the rich and division between the communists and the "pseudo" communists. The pressure to reform and to democratise will come to bear sooner than later. Their financial institution teeters on the brinks of bankrupcy at any moment becuase of lack of control and transparency. It will crack, I give it 10 years. Taiwan will be a shinning light to China and will have a lot to bring to the table in terms of its experience transforming itself from military dictatorship ( Chiang Kai-shek's KMT) to its current form of democracy and market economy. Just look up the per capital income of Taiwan and China and it's not hard to understand why China must break this bottle neck to uplift the standard of livings of its own people if it ever wants to elevate to the modern society.

Your all wrong and right. Taiwan is one of Red China's (let's call it what it is) biggest partners. The Commie Chinese can hem and haw all they want but the fact is that Red China, Taiwan, and the US will keep the status quo because we all have alot to lose. Strategically, Taiwan is almost impossible to invade by the sea. It only has a few decent beaches. The Reds would either have to subdue Taiwan with tactical nukes, or do a massive airborne drop. Let's be honesty, the PRC could not even invade a sliver of land on the Vietnamese border in 1979 and they can not even protect their workers in Iraq. If the Reds, in a worst case scenario, decided to lob a few nukes at the West Coast (which PRC has invested a fortune in), the PRC will be steaming hotter than a pot of Sam Woo BBQ steamed rice and glowing more than Chairman Mao's smile before you can say "Hi Yah." Neither of us want this. I worry more about falling in love with another BG than I do about the Reds. Besides, Wal Mart is already conquering Red China and Red China has conquered Wal Mart.

However, I do believe, that Red China is pulling the strings of Kim Mentally Jung just to throw us off guard and confuse our security situation. PRC only wants to make money and breed women. As Mokewen has told me, PRC will probably control the world economically in 70 years. Sounds like a good excuse to to marry a Red Chinese girl. They are great f***s by the way and very kinky when they cum to America. Years of repression I guess.

BTW you Bush-bashers. The "W" stands for Winner and Whoop-Ass!!!!

Western propaganda. So funny.

The masses in west are fed a propaganda about China that they believe easily (like shown by some posts above). China is "more" democratic than what most people think in the west. It just... well, somehow different.

There are several political parties in China besides the CPC. The Kuomintang party continued to exist in China well after most of its members moved to Taiwan in 1949. In the latest congress, about 400 delegates didn't vote for the Hu/Zeng combo (many voted against and some others abstained). Those delegates are in turn themselves elected by municipal, regional, and provincial people's congresses.

By the way, I would say that the Kuonmintag in governing Taiwan was no more democratic than any mainland China government. At least until recently. Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai Shek) ruled Taiwan with martial law until his death in the 70s; and after that his son also ruled until he died in the late 80s. No very democratic if you ask me. Things are different now; but only as of very recent.

Anyway, I am not going to go at lenght about why things are not like we are told. I leave it to those that are open minded and intellectually curious and willing to think by themselves to find beyond what gets regurgitated by mass media. Well.... to make it easier and get started here are a couple of links.

(the one above is biased towards China, but still can be informative)

(Country study from the USA Library of Congress. Very complete. Good government information in Chapter 10. A bit old, but still closer to the truth than what you would hear in Fox news)

(very good information)

I am not saying that China is a total democracy like those of the Scandinavian countries or like Switzerland. But it is neither the brutal dictatorship that some western governments want their uneducated masses to believe.

Right, Smeggy, I suppose you also have bought into the Chinese Communists' propoganda that they do have " opposition" parties !! hahaha ! Do you know what happened to the last person there who had spoken up against the Communist' party line ? Why don't you go to China and say something nasty about Jiang ZeMing or the current leaders- WenJianBao and HuJienTao ? See if you get to come back to Thailand again ? If what's in China today is democracy, who needs dictatorship ? Didn't know you were that stupid !

Nice replies chaps !

Does anybody think that the US would use this as an excuse to base its forces in LOS on a more permanent basis?

On the question of 'Democracy' the Cubans are restricted a bit but this is probably due to the insecurity of her government. Most of the military kit is rusting like it is in Mother Russia.

The word is getting around that Cuba is a destination very worth visiting for the average tourist who is trying to avoid over-commercialisation and 'tourism-pollution'.

The point earlier about tourism causing social change is a good point. But the average level of education in Cuba is far higher than Thailand and so is their dedication to the arts.

I remember on my last visit to LOS asking an American why he had moved to Thailand.
His reply ?

"I don't want to live in a 'Police-State' !"

I suppose most things are relative?

I was interested in the Riceman's point.
If China did try to invade what would happen, from what I understand from the Taiwanese mentality Taiwan would fight to the death with an army of around 400 000. So do any of the more militariliy knowlegable members have any thoughts on possible outcomes / scenarios on this
