One of the main reasons for convicting the copper was the thousands of pommie tourists who vowed never to come to Thailand ever again. One small town cop was worth less than the $millions that tourists bring in. Especially when these murders were so blatant. Otherwise he would have gotten off.

It is a good point Kenneth but it is not just down to the tourist dollar. It is also a loss of face for the Thais to have one of their own policeman murder 2 tourists and to have to endure the worlds media reports on the crime and their judgements on Thailand. The man has brought shame to Thailand in their eyes and that in itself is enough for them to punish.

You try saying "'i am this and that"' Thats how your boy most likely got it big mouth. Bet the cop is released in under a year with new Id Well educated kids by the way, dont swear and spit in polices face. Your just a typical pommie prick that has the audacity to bag australians and alike (even his fellow country men in pattaya) Ironically you have displayed here by your naieve insights, and big mouth name calling the exact case in point I am making. :: try it with a cop here and see what happens...he did.

Loss of face maybe, but most Thais will still believe that the tourists were at least partly to blame whether they spat at the policeman or not. In fact, I just asked the Thai girls in my office (all educated, some in the US) and all said that they thought the tourist was rude to the policeman and partly deserved what they got. What do you say to that?

I'd say they don't know the facts of what happened, just like the rest of us. Yet they choose to say it must be the farangs fault or at the very least include part blame of the farang. That is the Thais. Their culture is based on Confucian doctrine, in it there is always, always Loyalty to the group first and foremost, so here obviously loyalty to Thais and Thailand first, it is indoctrinated from birth. That is why we as farangs always come second even if we are married to them!! Some call it the xenophobia of Asians I would not disagree. I'm not saying an altercation didn't happen but that only a Thai or a dirty would believe that it happened the way it was suggested by the Thai cop. It was embarrasing and a loss of face for Thailand, but only because they had the world looking at them, not because 2 kids died don't get my meanings mixed up. Dirty, "Well educated kids by the way, dont swear and spit in polices face." Thank god for that, thats exactly what i've been trying to tell you. Well done.

Thailand: Land of the third highest incidence of murder by firearms (per capita) in the world. Pushes the US into 4th place. Rule No. 1: Don't do anything but smile to anyone with a gun in Thailand -- you never know what's going to happen, or why. Rule No. 2: Avoid anyone with a gun in Thailand -- you never know what's going to happen, or why. Rule No. 3: Don't hang out with anyone with a gun in Thailand -- you never know what's going to happen, or why. As a much-repeated and quoted interview with a Rough Guide (I think -- it was on the web site of whichever guide it was, as well as the BBC web site amongst others) writer said (and I paraphrase) : They thought they were at home. They weren't. Yes, it was wrong. No, it wouldn't happen in England (well, maybe in parts of South London). They certainly didn't ''deserve'' to be killed, whatever they did. They weren't in England though. You spend time in a Thai cop's bar, think you're ''getting friendly'' with him -- you know, ''well in'' -- forget you're not at home and...shit happens. People who forget that they don't really understand what's what don't deserve to be killed but it's happened before and it'll happen again. I haven't been here very long, but I'm guided by people I know (from England, well-travelled and well-educated) who have been here for 10 or 20 years. Some married to Thais with nice HiSo jobs, some who have spent their entire time here in the gutter. None would claim to actually fully understand what the f*** goes on here (anyone from Europe or N. America who claims they do are simply deluding themselves). The victims of this cop's ''temper'' were in the wrong place at the wrong time doing the wrong thing, even if they didn't know what it was. Who knows what the facts were. The ''facts'' don't really matter (see rules 1 to 3 above). There's no point moaning about it. Oooh, what a bad policeman. Ooooh, what a terrible justice system. Well, it's theirs and it ain't going to change any time soon and it's not designed for the likes of us. Live with it or strike Thailand of your list of holiday destinations.

MarkC 9is this statistic based on the 2004 figures? Then all the people who got shot in the TRT 'Let's-clean-up-Thailand-from-Ya-Baa' capaign are counted too. Otherwise I can hardly believe the figures are higher than the US... shark68

I think they're 2003. Can't remember. Use Google -- they were the latest figures available about three months ago. And yes, it's true -- there's something that the USA isn't No. 1 at. (It's per capita, remember, not absolute.) Oh, and the Manchester Socceroos aren't No. 1 either And I can't remember who was 1 and 2. Cambodia? Vietnam?

Him saying "sorry" ain't gonna cut it. It does send a message. Falang females better not say no to Thai cops who want sex. Edit In: Venture to say that Columbia will be very high on the gunshot fatalities per capita list.
