I noticed we here in Australia are rated number 1 per capita for robbery!!!!!

Its probably all the Kiwi's over here....nothing left for them to steal back home....

From the website - "The country with the highest reported total per capita crime rate is Dominica followed by New Zealand and Finland."

Thailand rates 8th from 62 countries surveyed in Murder Rate with 5140 committed in 2000 !!

No, not really. Thailand ranks 8th only in terms of the absolute number, but that's mainly due to a large population. India got the top spot with 37,000 murders but then its population is over a billion!

What you need to do is hit on the per capita button and you then see that Thailand is not on the list at all.

Frankly, the info is a bit dubious. Where is crime-ridden South Africa on the list??

I am sure the murder rate in Thailand doesn't include the 2000 odd people murdered in the drugs war or all the assisted suicides or the "accidents"

The figures could really blow out with all these added.

Interesting that Singapore is not mentioned. According to a recent article in the Straits Times have had approx 2600 crimes in the first 6 months of 2005 out of a population of 4 million.

I suppose that either:

a) Singapore refused to participate in the survey -or-

b) The Crime Rate in Singapore is too low to show on their scales -or-

c) They believe that Singapore is still part of Malaysia as evidenced by the maps they have on the site.

I love the extensive knowledge of geography that is constantly demonstrated by Westerners...

Statistics can be a funny thing. 2600 crimes, they say. What kind of a crime? A crime can be anything from murder to knocking over a garbage can. But when you get down to the dirty business of murders and violence-related crimes, I would reckon Singapore is way down on the list.

I thought that Singapore is the safest city I've ever been to in my life, though admittedly, I am speaking from a tourist's viewpoint.

It is safe actually,

Most of the crimes are burglary. Actual robbery and assault is very low.

As you cannot purchase a gun in Singapore most murders are by prang or by tossing someone from a high floor.

The advantage here is that it is pretty hard to get caught in a drive-by pranging....

Evil Penivel
I remember the old days (early 1980s) in Bangkok and Pattaya when violence among farangs didn't matter. Bar fights were considered a pleasant variation on the night's festivities as long as none of the BGs were threatened and -most importantly - the bar owner's property didn't look to sustain any damage. Some guys got messed up very badly, but the Thai police just laughed. It was viewed as a farang problem.

It was a different matter if a farang insulted the King or Buddha. But that serves the farang jerks right - in Thailand, you play by Thai rules. Once saw a group of farang teenagers disciplined quite severely on the spot (shall we say) for climbing on an image of the Buddha. They got what they deserved. I didn't stick around to see the end of it as I was concerned that the popular resentment over the desecration might spread to farangs who weren't involved.

Then there's the famous urban legend about the drunk farang who's kicked to death in the street by a group of Thais for pissing on an image of the King. Everyone, from preschoolers to the elderly, jumped in to get a piece of him. Police did nothing, the medical examiner said he died of a heart attack and the body was cremated within hours. I don't know if there's any truth in it, but I wouldn't feel sorry for the guy. Their turf, their rules.

But drive-bys can happen in any community. This one is hard to do in writing, but here goes:

What is: clop... clop... clop BANG! BANG! BANG! clip clop clip clop clip clop?

An Amish drive-by shooting.
