Thailand's crime situation?
It's really a very mixed bag.
I can point out a neighborhood in and around Soi 22, Sukhumvit Road which has seen a drastic increase in late-night muggings for cash and residential burglaries in the past few years.
I knew many of the victims, mostly Thais and a few farangs.
Basically, the perpetrators were/are addicts in need of quick money for fixes.
As for Bangkok being much safer than Rio, of course that is the case.
I have known an American who had his gold chain snatched off his neck in broad daylight on a crowded Rio sidewalk.
Still, he was a dummy for wearing it in the first place.
I never heard of such a happenstance in Bangkok but I do know of Thai girls who have had their gold necklaces and cell phones snatched away by thugs on Pattaya beaches and backstreets, late at night.
So, shit happens. Use your brain.

Last month, Bernard Le Court, a 52-year-old chef from Liverpool who moved to Thailand six years ago to open a restaurant, had his throat cut in Pattaya. A local taxi driver was arrested after the body was found in bushes near Pluta Luang, 22 miles south of the town. He was said to have heavy gambling debts and to have robbed Le Court of his camera equipment and money. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
The lively local paper Pattaya Today, one of three local English-language publications, provides a round-up of the criminal happenings complete with graphic photos: Thai police make a speciality of posing beside the bodies of murder victims. In one week last month it was carrying reports of a Briton, Alexander Downey, caught with three packs of "ice" (pure amphetamines), and a report that noted that "the Brit's landlady said she believed he had made some enemies in Pattaya and they had decided to put an end to his nefarious activities". Another report told of a "Swiss guy found expired in condo - possibly hit with hard object".

I have also read of westerners trying flying lessons (without the hang glider) from the balcony of a high apartment block, I have even read that a Thai couple with political connections have done it ! All very different from the impression of a relatively safe holiday destination. The Westerners with their 'wannabee Police Academy' style uniforms and actions strolling about Pattaya. Was that fancy dress or real ?

Nok’s Amok Academy is run by Randy from the US and his Thai wife Nok and they teach self-defence and knife fighting. What is knife fighting?! While many men attend, they actually specialise in teaching Thai women to defend themselves with a knife. They feel that even a Thai female who may be a black belt will still be at a disadvantage to a big man, or attacker with a knife. However, a knife in the hands of a skilled fighter will make things more of a level playing field. According to Randy, “in about four months a woman will be adept enough to protect herself. Usually just showing the blade, and that you are committed to using it to save your life will stop most people.”

I have a wee example of the reality of percieved violence...
Personally I don't believe violence is on the increase, in LOS or many other places, the real fact of it is the media in all it's wisdom is publising more and more gross facts and findings for us to view, in an ever increasing media controlled world.
For example;
I was unlucky enough to be stuck in Scotland on a training mission for 5 weeks.
My associate was a Nigerian engineer who I have worked with for the last 4 years and know well.
After a few weeks he was firmly of the opinion that the UK was a hotbed of murder, school kid abduction and rape because all he saw on TV news was exactly that.... Murder, school kid abduction and rapes.
He then proceeded to tell me how safe Nigeria was compared to the UK as there and never murders abductions or rapes....
TV over there isn't obsessed with showing these things... I am sure it will be soon as someone works out they can up their ratings by showing what goes on over there in full...
But until then this guy will never believe anything else.
Anyone who has lived in LOS for a few years will know the Thais obsession with reading and viewing violent acts, just look at 191 crime news and magazines like it, full explicit stories and pictures....
Newspapers don't help either, I even saw a pic of my poor dutch mate on the 3rd page of a paper lying shot dead in nakon Si tammerat a few years ago, not a pretty sight!
We are all getting desensitized to this barbarism, it's about time Newspaper editors and TV news show directors got the same treatment as Al Quaeda hostages...
Cut the f***ers head off and video it, then send it to the families!
