I could not give a rats arse about elections here or at home, I look at the parties involved, what they say, and cast my vote quietly. Cannot vote here, so I will not become involved.

Thaksin's decision to dissolved Parliament and call a snap election is a masterstroke and EXACTLY what Sondhi and PAD didnt want.
He understands his support base very well. He knows that the protests are largely confined to a vocal but unrepresentative middle class intellengsia based in the cities. And he knows that the semi-educated rural classes which form the massive bulk of the electorate support him unconditionally.
They care only about the hand-outs, the 30 baht health scheme, the new roads in Isaan. They admire that he is wealthy; hell, even some monks recently suggested that his wealth is a reward for being a good guy in previous lives. When monks are saying these things, you know he has massive grass roots support.
They even, I suspect, forgive his less than clean image. A taxi driver I spoke to the other day summed it up for me. "Yes, he greedy man but who care. He do good things for poor people." The driver then talked about how he paid back Thailand's debt to IMF and cleaned streets of drugs.
Thaksin will likely win the election and interpret it as yet another vindication of a massive personal mandate.
As for Hermie's musings on how bar girls will vote........ FFS! What a pillock.

I don't believe Basil Bush's question was answered - does an election day have much of an impact on tourist-y things (including, of course, P4P) ? I can't imagine that it does, but thought someone in the LOS could chime in and let those of us traveling around that time breathe a sigh of relief.

No alcohol for the election day and the one after it was the rules for the Bangkok Governors elections.
Expect a General Election to be possibly even stricter.
Oh and all the Bar Girls go home to vote.... well....maybe...
There are also the senate elections on April 19th as well.....though I'm not sure what the involvement is for those

Thailand is in political turmoil, it's future political direction in the balance. Will it be peaceful elections followed by liberal democracy, or will the army get a bit uppity and decide to restore some order.
Who knows?
But it doesnt really matter. What really matters to some members is if they'll manage to get a f***ing Beer Chang and some isaan girl to touch their wee cock for their holidays.
