Coyote dancers blame imposters for criticism
=================================

Coyote dancers have blamed "fake" racy dancing during a religious ceremony for criticism of their job.

Many dancers in Bangkok insist their work does not offend morality because they usually dance in bars. They say the problem is caused by some organisers exploiting the sexy shows to promote products at inappropriate areas.

"Those are not coyote dancers like us. We know what kind of jobs we should accept or reject," said Yok, 25.

She was referring to a group of girls in sexy clothes who danced provocatively to promote motorcycle sales in Nong Khai province. The dancing drew strong criticism as it was held near a temple during a religious ceremony to mark the end of Buddhist Lent in October. The show upset Her Majesty the Queen and as soon as her concern was made known, state agencies led by the Culture Ministry considered imposing restrictions on coyote dancing. Culture Minister Khaisri Sri-aroon will today unveil the outcome of a meeting between officials and private companies on state initiatives to set a minimum age for dancers and introduce strict controls on the dancing.

Yok and other dancers have joined a chorus of voices calling on the government to differentiate between dancers working in pubs and bars and those dancing at inappropriate venues. "Those dancing in the temple are fake," she said.

However, most dancers agree with the idea of setting a minimum age for dancers, which should be in line with a law that does not allow teenagers under the age of 20 to enter discotheques.

Coyote dancing has become a big hit since 2000, following the release of the popular American film Coyote Ugly.

The film depicts the lives of female bartenders who perform erotic dancing in a New York bar.

In real life, Yok says, it is not easy to become a coyote dancer. She spent two years studying dancing before becoming a coyote dancer. Others have also worked hard to become good dancers.

But they are rewarded for their efforts as they can earn a lot of money from dancing to support their studies and families. Yok earns 20,000 baht a month while Wave, 21, makes nearly 30,000 baht.

This is a key reason why they have asked the government to carefully consider restrictions on coyote dancing. The impact would not be limited to them, but could extend to their families.

Wave is saving money for her undergraduate studies. Each month she also has to give some of her earnings to her family. The inappropriate coyote dancing in Nong Khai also upset her as she fears it could lead to the end of her career.

"I don't think coyote dancing spoils girls," Wave said. "Most of us return home after work."

However, Pol Maj-Gen Kamronwit Toopkrachang, chief of the Crimes Against Children, Juveniles and Women Suppression Division, has warned the dancers and organisers to beware of outdoor shows that may break the law on public lewdness and could put the dancers, clad in short, tight outfits, in danger.

Two-legged models too provocative for show
==================================

Coyote dancers at the Bangkok International Motor Show at Bangna have drawn not only huge male audiences but criticism that they are too provocative.

Every evening, the halls empty out as the coyote girls dance outside in the stereo zone.

Hundreds of visitors, almost all men, besiege the pickups used as stages for the sexually-arousing dancers. The vehicles belong to various car stereo brands and shops.

With cameras or mobile phones in hand, visitors take pictures of the girls up close and even up their miniskirts. The dance show is presented from 6.30-8.30pm.

Following Her Majesty the Queen's recent concern about risque dancing at a Buddhist festival in Nong Khai, authorities are now seriously looking into ways to curb the rapidly growing phenomenon of coyote dancing.

The Interior Ministry has already asked governors to curb inappropriate displays in their provinces, especially at Buddhist sites and public events, while the Culture Ministry has proposed a ban on those under 20 from working as coyote girls and a halt to all such performances at certain places.

"Some booths are so popular with the dancers dressing in sexy bikinis, and they gyrate and posture wantonly," said a photographer who visited the exhibition yesterday.

Ladda Tangsupachai, director of the Culture Watch Centre, said she had not seen this year's motor show dances, but the vehicle presenters - known as "pretties" - were dressed well and in not too revealing clothes as in previous years.

She said various motor show organisers had cooperated with the Culture Ministry's request to keep their pretties and coyote girls in check for sensible images. However, she would soon send officials to scrutinise the exhibition.

Temple dance raises a storm
======================

The Culture Watch Centre has handed police photos of what it claims to be a sexually provocative dance in a Samut Sakhon temple and demanded that legal action be taken against the dance organiser for staging the show in a place of worship.

Centre director Ladda Tangsupachai deplored the Mor Lam Sing northeastern dance that was staged recently during an ordination ceremony in the presence of senior monks.

After looking at the recorded images of the dance, she felt it was lewd and racy, coming across as something close to a striptease.

The dance photos will be handed to Pol Gen Mongkot Maneerin, deputy police chief in charge of suppressing indecent forms of media, in seeking the prosecution of the show organiser.

Ms Ladda explained that the organisers of such shows usually charge customers between 60,000-100,000 baht, depending on the size of the dance troupe.

She has urged that any public displays of indecent acts be reported to the government's 1111 hotline.

Police to list coyote dancers
======================

Police have been told to compile a list of coyote dancers and their organisers in order to launch a crackdown on sexually provocative dances in public.

The order, issued by deputy national police chief Pol Gen Wongkot Maneerin, comes hot on the heels of a report about a salacious dance performed at a temple in Samut Sakhon.

Earlier, a condom manufacturer sparked an uproar when it organised a promotional event in which participants were encouraged to attach stickers bearing a product logo on the bodies of female presenters in revealing clothes.

Pol Gen Wongkot said the list will be used to facilitate not only investigations into lewd acts but also evaluations of police efficiency.

Police investigations into the two events are under way and initial findings suggested they were improper. A sub-committee on improper media set up by the Culture Ministry will meet today to lay down guidelines for deciding what improper media actually is.

Obscene 'mor lam sing' shows face police crackdown
=======================================

Police plan to crack down on obscene shows, which have been blamed as a cause of sexual abuse.

"Performers, organisers and hirers of pornographic shows will be punished," National Police deputy commissioner General Wongkot Maneerin said yesterday. Offenders would face a fine of up to Bt500, if convicted.

Wongkot spoke after a complaint was lodged with the Culture Ministry's monitoring centre over performers from a mor lam sing troupe, who allegedly took their clothes off during a show, staged at a religious rite in Samut Songkhram.

Mor lam sing is an Isaan-style performance with fast-step dancing, and a modern version of the slower mor lam.

"Those involved will face legal action," Wongkot warned.

In response to allegations that local police officers in Samut Songkhram were bribed to turn a blind eye to the sexually-arousing performance, Wongkot said an investigation was being held.

"If the allegations are proven, the punishment could be dismissal from the service," he said.

Wongkot said he had ordered police stations across the country to draw up a list of people who organise or perform in such shows so that police could check on their performances. "If they are found staging the pornographic shows, arrests will be made," he said.

Wongkot said a subcommittee on illegal-media planned to set up three units to comprehensively suppress illegal activities.

"There will be monitoring, legal and investigation units," he said.

The subcommittee would meet today, and Wongkot said he would attend.

Meanwhile, national artist Chaweewan Pantu - known as the "Mor Lam Queen" - urged the Culture Ministry to take action against improper performances by mor lam troupes.

"I have heard that some dancers of these groups offer sex services too," she said.

Ratreesawas Ounthaya, regarded as the originator of mor lam sing, called on the authorities to punish those who exploited the art.
