Report from The Nation dated Monday 17 September 2007 :-

Ill-fated One-Two-Go aircraft not covered by local insurance
==============================================

The One-Two-Go McDonnell Douglas MD 82 that crashed in Phuket on Sunday was not covered by local insurance, said Chantra Purnariksha, the head of the Office of the Insurance Commission.

Chantra said it is not yet known whether the aircraft, which was leased by OneTwoGo from a foreign company, is covered by foreign insurance or not, something that the insurance commission still needs to find out.
However, airline companies normally buy insurance to cover both the aircraft in operation and passengers.

Chantra said foreign passengers usually have their own life and accident insurance, but Thai passengers, who are now being treated at local hospitals, will be able to get compensation from OneTwoGo, which will have to pay hospital bills immediately. The airline can claim those costs from its foreign insurers later.

Chantra said that the General Insurance Association had confirmed that OneTwoGo did not have local insurance for the MD 82 that crashed. He added that he will try to find out whether the foreign owner of the MD 82, which had leased it to OneTwoGo, had insurance for the aircraft.

Relatives of the deceased from the accident seeking to claim damages from the provincial insurance office can call 1122 for further information. Payment and compensation will only be delivered after DNA verification checks have been conducted.

Interesting points Jojje about the lack of fire prevention. The airline industry as you have said IS dominated by high costs and unfortunately it seems that money is spent on prevention with systems like TCAS etc, but the savings are made up by passing on technologies which could minimize the aftermath of a crash.

Meanwhile, after rising at 0800 to see if my flight out of Phuket is a go today, I had to call back several times before there was any information. On the last call the airport is closed unitl 5 PM.

I got myself rebooked for tomorrow at the same time rahter than go to the airport tonight and chance a standby seat.

Minor inconvenience for me, I certainly don't mind being in Phuket and if it helps the investigation proceed. I'm all for it.

It feels strange as most airline crashes don't affect me or occur anywhere close to where I am. Having landed a few days earlier in similar conditions, actually it was after dark, this news htis a little closer to home. I feel so badly for those people.

Apparently the pilot was Indonesian.

Confirmed, pilot was indonesian and a former air force pilot. Plane had its first flight no later than Oct 1986. At least none of the MD82 in use is newer. The oldest one would be a former TWA plane going back to March 1983.

BlackCats, how did AirAsia handle your rebooking?

I guess, as it was within 48 hours, your original flight is void.

As a pilot myself I just have the feeling that this guy just reduced the problems ahead and wanted to deliver the flight and the passengers instead of canceling or delaying the flight. This is a well known phenomena amongst flight staff. The "push" to deliver and not delay. I have no idea what the internal routines are at one-to-go but I have a number of flight pals who told me they would never apply for a job there since it is known that the internal policy and safety record is less than desireable.

This pilot had the "get-down-at-all-cost" syndrome very obviously - because certainly he observed the terrible weather and then should know about the risk of wind shear. The correct decision would have been to use the alternative - but then again: what would the consequences have been for him with the brass?? Of this we know nothing of course but the pilots job is a "non-forgiving-to-errors" mission. You simply have to apply all known info and knowledge into the flight planning in order to arrive safe.

Agreed,

but it is not just the budget airlines that do this. I was on United Express (operated by ASA) out of Chicago (ORD) a few years back when we nearly flipped in an Embraer on our second landing attempt into Louisville (SDF) due to crosswinds.

The problem was that due to scheduling and weather issues the day before several ORD - SDF flights had been canceled and the passengers were backed-up and waiting. Because of this it appears that diverting to Lexington was not an option and the pilot had orders to get down at all costs.

To make a long story short the left wing tip was about 6 in from hitting the runway when aircraft finally righted and were able to roll to a stop. On the taxi in to the terminal I saw a UPS 767 abort landing because it was being pushed across the runway. On the shuttle to my hotel I was talking to some Southwest Airline 737 pilots who told me that after they touched down the wind gusted and it registered 68 mph on their instruments...

Wind shear is hard to detect unless the airport has the right instruments but in both these cases (mine and Phuket) the wind shear conditions were known to the pilots and they should have circled for awhile before attempting a second landing...

I googled one of the victims....

It seems to be a guy from Derry (Ireland). Here is his page:

http://www.bebo.com/aarontoland

It's heartbreaking to see his friends posting like 25 minutes ago like 'How are you'.

Would it be appropriate to post a message to inform them?

EDIT IN: The page is not accessible anymore.
