THAI Clarifies Situation at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang International Airports
Due to the current political protest at Suvarnabhhumi International Airport, the Airports of Thailand (AOT) announced the suspension of services at Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
THAI’s Corporate Communications Department provides clarification on inbound international flights to Suvarnabhumi International Airport today (26 November 2008). Sixteen flights have been diverted to land in Don Mueang International Airport, while another three flights: TG508/Muscat-Karachi-Bangkok, TG520/Kuwait-Dubai-Bangkok and TG941/Milan-Bangkok, have been diverted to land in U-Tapao Airport.
All THAI’s inbound and outbound flights from Suvarnabhumi International Airport are temporarily suspended until it resumes normal operations.
THAI’s domestic flights, inbound and outbound from Don Mueang International Airport remain normal operation.
For further information, passengers may contact THAI’s Contact Center at tel. 0-2356-1111.

ok, for those trying to get to bkk from the us, maybe a trip to Vientiene, then a taxi down to Udon, then a plane ride to DM...... if it was mt trip, I know EVA flys to Vietniene or can get you there somehow.... that the best and closet way to get there I think....

Ignore most of the pics though, they relate to the October 7th incident, that in my opinion was kind of like the first Iraq war, didn't go far enough, escalated at a later date and needed to be done all over again.

Cancelled my two week trip to Thailand. I was scheduled for Friday departure from Bombay for BKK.
Hope things get better over the coming days. Thailand is losing a lot of tourists, and it can ill afford to. In these days of the world economy on a downturn, unity is the need of the day.

4 bomb attacks rock Bangkok

At least four rounds of bomb attacks rocked Bangkok early Wednesday, injuring at least 12 people.
The number of explosions and injuries was still confusing at press time.
Three explosions were heard outside the outbound passenger terminal of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 4:30 am.
The explosion sounds frightened the protesters as police vehicles rushed to the scene. The protesters feared that police would come to violently disperse them. But their leaders managed to calm them down minutes later.
Thai PBS reported that four protesters were injured, two severely in the Suvarnabhumi explosions.
The fourth explosion happened at 6.30am at the Don Muang Airport, where protesters led by the Peoples Alliance for Democracy were rallying.
The figure of injured protesters at Don Muang airport was still confusing.
Channel 3 reported that two were injured but Channel 9 reported that five were injured, two severely.
Channel 3 added that a grenade was also launched at the protesters but it did not explode.
And 2 men were injured by bomb shrapnel and one was shot when a group of men hurled two bombs and fired at the 92.75 community radio station for taxi drivers.
Police said the attack happened at 4:30 am.
The station was located inside Vibhavadi Rangsit Soi 3 where dozens of PAD guards attacked taxi drivers Tuesday evening.
A taxi driver, who identified himself as Watcharin, said he and friends were standing at the mouth of the soi and suddenly heard two explosions and the assailants also opened fire at them.
The injured were rushed to the Rajvithi Hospital.
The first explosion occurred on the Dusit Bridget in Bangkok's Dusit district at 2 am Wednesday, police said.
No one was injured in the explosion which caused a small crack at one side of the bridge.
Police found a safety pin of an M26 grenade at the scene.
Police quoted eyewitnesses as saying they saw two men on a motorcycle speeding from the direction of the Government House.
The pillion rider hurled the bomb to the bridge and they sped away.

Anupong's trump card for besieged Suvarnabhumi Airport

The People's Alliance for Democracy has stooped down to a nastiest move to lay siege on Suvarnabhumi Airport in order to unseat the Somchai Wongsawat government.
Its move is definitely unpopular and inflicts untold damage to the country although the PAD finally gets the undivided attention and gains a chokehold to topple Somchai.
After PAD-led protesters took control of the airport at 9.00 pm on Wednesday's night, frantic negotiations has been inconclusive.
The government is applying strong pressure on Army chief General Anupong Paochinda to intervene and clear protesters out of the airport. It wants to invoke the security law to empower Anupong to take charge of the crowd dispersal.
The PAD also wants Anupong to intervene but for an entirely different reason. It is trying to convince him to either stage a coup or throw his support to the opposition movement.
The government and the PAD both sees Anupong as having the trump card to decide the outcome of their fight.
Immediately after returning from Peru today at about 7.00 pm, Prime Minister Somchai will hold a face-to-face meeting with Anupong.
Anupong is expected to give his final answer on whether to assist the government to restore normalcy at the airport.
At this juncture, it uncertain what Anupong's stand really is. He still has half a day to review his options.
Based on his steadfast refusal to intervene in favour of the government, it is likely that he will not step in to ensure Somchai's survival.
The People Power Party is working hard in trying to replace Anupong. But it is making no headway. There is no shortage of ambitious generals willing the serve as a government's lackey. But the crucial question is whether it is possible to succeed Anupong's leadership and redirect the Army within short notice.
This leads to a dire scenario for Somchai. He may have no choice but to step down either by resigning or calling a snap election.
If the prime minister decides to cling to office regardless of dire consequences, then it is possible that by tomorrow the Democrats will resign their House seats en masse in order to force the House dissolution.
Somchai and his People Power Party are playing a high stake game to ensure survival as Anupong is about to show his trump card which can change the face of Thai politics.

Suvarnabhumi under siege cost over 50 million baht of damage
(BangkokPost.com) - The siege imposed by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) demonstrators on Suvarnabhumi airport since Tuesday night caused at least 50 million baht of damage, excluding airport and landing fees.
So far, Thai AirAsia cancelled 17 domestic flights and 11 international flights from 6am to 2pm. Passengers can call Thai AirAsia’s hotline service at 02-515-9999.
Bangkok Airways called off 24 domestic and international flights before afternoon. Passengers can contact the airline at 02-265-8777 or 1771.
Thai Airways International announced that its flights heading to Suvarnabhumi will be diverted to Don Mueang airport or U-Tapao airport. People can call the airline’s call center at 02-356-1111.

You can add to that that all China Airlines flights into Thailand have been summarily cancelled as well, as I just found when I was on my way to leave to the airport.
Travelers with Thailand as a final destination are not accepted for travel, until the airport re-opens. This aborted my Thanksgiving trip. Bummer.
It certainly did not endear PAD to my heart :-(
