From CNN: "Steven Hall, a British national injured in the blaze, told CNN that flames began to spread along the ceiling above the stage where a band and DJ were performing. But some people appeared to believe it was part of the performance. "At the same time there were people rushing to get out, there were other people who seemed to be lacking a sense of urgency and didn't seem to realize what was going on," Hall said. The blaze started near a stage where fireworks were being used as part of a performance on the club's closing night, police Maj. Gen. Chokchai Deeprasertwit said. If this is indeed what happened, it is almost exactly the same as the fire at the club in Rhode Island in 2003. The band put some sparklers on the wall behind them, and the sparks ignited the highly flammable material. The Rhode Island fire which killed over 100 people led to numerous criminal charges against the band and the club owners, resulting in jail time. Most people in the US now understand that you can never use any kind of fireworks indoors (including sparklers), but of course as time goes on younger band members and club managers may not remember that fire. Another thing that typically happens in these fires (and happened in Rhode Island) is that the exits are clogged with people. That is because once people reach the exits, they don’t move away from the building as quickly as possible to make room for others to exit. Instead, they stand at the exits and turn around to look at the fire, making it more difficult for others to exit the building. I guess that the 2003 Rohde Island club fire was not widely publicized in Thailand. One word of advice: If you ever see any fireworks indoors (including sparklers) start heading for the exits.

So a good time to ask the question I've raised on another board as well. The alternative ways out of NEP are...? I've read a number of references to other doorways but I'd welcome some firm information. NEP really IS an accident waiting to happen. Paybar

One alternate exit is through Morning2Night's back door. Provided the bar is open at that time, you can run out of NEP via that bar.

According to the Nation, the prime minister thought similarly to Yokul: http://nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/30092280/PM-questions-why-fireworks-lit-inside-pub
Quote: from Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday, per the Nationbr] "The question is why they let someone to take fireworks inside the pub and light them up,"
However, the comment I most enjoy (and the type of which I was waiting for) is from the police chief, also reported by the Nation: http://nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/30092275/Police-chief-rules-out-arson-in-Santika-Pub-fire
Police Commissioner-General Pol Gen Phatcharawat Wongsuwan Thursday ruled out an arson in the fire that killed 59 pub-goers at the famous Santika Pub in Bangkok late Wednesday night. Phatcharawat said he had received a preliminary report from forensic officials but the cause of the fire had yet to be determined. He ruled out an arson, saying nobody would intended to cause so huge casualties.
His logical deduction is: it couldn't possibly have been arson, because no one would have intended to cause so many deaths.

Arson? yes it is possible but not very common that a person or group lit a place full of people but sadly it has happen before. So I think Mr police Commissioner-General Pol Gen Phatcharawat Wongsuwan is wrong to assume that nobody would start a fire with so many casualty's. A real pyromaniac usually would not want to harm people but there are other cases that people have torched nightclubs full of people. But this case looks like (as said before) the accident in long Island 2003 with fireworks indoors,

apparently the guests did have sparklers etc. so they were their own fire hazard as well doesn't make it any better for those who were lost & their families, R.I.P.

That was in Rhode Island, the smallest US state. In the US it would be considered to be negligent homocide, not an accident, because the fireworks were not ignited by accident, they were a planned part of the show. Apparently there was New Years Countdown display that was made of sparklers (or similar) that ignited the stage on fire, very much similar to the Rhode Island night club fire.
