Yes mate, being local means that I have heard this and other sorts of alleged Thai scams over and over again. 90% of them rumour, the other 10% are gullible idiots that would get scammed at a kids birthday party.
I noticed that someone posted a query on Virtual Tourist website asking if anyone had been nicked for alleged shoplifting at the airport and there was not one response.

Oh good call Thaidup, bring the one and only true Thai scam that has some sort of credibility. Got anymore? If anyone is stupid and greedy enough to buy gems from a bloke in the street in a 3rd world country, expecting to triple your investment when you get home, deserves to part with their cash.
When it comes down to it, only people at the low end of the IQ spectrum get ripped off. Does that describe you mate?
I have a house, 2 cars, a five figure monthly salary and enough money to retire here comfortably, built up over 10 years of hard work in Thailand. What are your qualifications Thaidup? Sitting in a beer bar drinking Chang and spinning shit about the latest Thai rumour saying 'another nail in the Thai tourist coffin'?

Was in CM during the airport closure, got to talking to a guy from India, he claimed he made a living buying certain gems (I forget the particular gem) and selling them to a jewerly chain in Australia
He bought at the huge jewerly store in CM, PTY has one too, he wasn't trying to sell me anything, just sharing a story, true or not I don't know
I took a trip to this gem shop, huge and very impressive, maybe someone can refresh me on the name of these stores

First week in Thailand, 1989 I was drinking with a Swede regulary. A couple of nights later he showed me some jewellry he bought and told me the seller knew the name of the shops in Stockholm that he could sell them at, even gave him the price. I told him I was dubious and he agreed that he had probably made a mistake. Never met him again so I'll never know.

One of the stores is Yindee in one of the bylanes near Pratunam. Big showroom, hardworking sales staff, as most anywhere else in LOS. One of the many tourists near the old World Trade Centre sent me there several years back when I was still a bit damp between the ears. Spun the usual yarn about doubling or trebling his money by buying frmo Yindee and selling in his home country and reaping enough profits to make it a lovely habit of tripping down to LOS several times a year. I thanked him with a "some other time" and prepared to move on when he persuaded me that it was the last day of the sales and I better go. A passing tuk tuk said he would take me there for 20 baht.
Since I didnt have anything else to do at 445 pm and he told me the store was closing at 5pm (what terrific coincidences all round!) I agreed to risk 20 baht on an exploration. At Yindee they showed me good looking jewellery and assured me they would give me the hallmark certificate too. They never peddled any line to me about reselling the jewels for a huge profit. Just businesslike salesmanship of their product and price.
Finally I bought a small gold ring for 5000 baht. And gifted it on my return home. That was some 6 years ago. I haven't had any adverse comments from the recipient to this day either. Long Live Thailand.
