... re: Hat Yai hotel that was bombed last week... no fire sprinkler system... not even a fire alarm system... fire corridors apparently not built to code. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/security/287679/hotel-safety-poor-mayor-sorry ____________________________________________ Hotel safety 'poor', mayor sorry Published: 6/04/2012 at 01:49 Survivors of the car bomb attack at a Hat Yai hotel in Songkhla on Saturday are complaining about poor safety systems at the hotel. The city mayor, meanwhile, has apologised for the poor emergency response. Sonthaya Pimsiri was watching an action film in a 3-D cinema on the fifth floor of the Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel when a car bomb in the hotel's car park went off. Mr Sonthaya, a 54-year-old primary education official from Phatthalung province, said while he was watching an explosion scene in the movie, the real explosion in the car park took place. The impact lifted his body off his seat. A second later, the cinema blacked out as electricity supplies were severed. As ushers opened the doors of the cinema, he heard people outside shouting that a bomb had gone off. A warning of a possible second bomb blast delayed attempts by crowds in the cinema to flee. Thick clouds of smoke entered as hundreds of people scrambled for the fire exit. "People were running for their lives as they were running out of air," he said. "There were windows along the fire exit but I could not break them. It was difficult to breathe as the place was filled with smoke," Mr Sonthaya said. Fortunately, windows on the first floor were broken and people inside were able to breathe through the holes. He said the building's occupants made their way out, their faces blackened by thick smoke. Mr Sonthaya complained the building lacked sprinklers and fire alarms. The fire exit was narrow, and unventilated. "The security system at the hotel was very poor," he said. "Security guards were too lenient about checking vehicles which entered the underground car park. They should have also opened the doors of the vehicles, not just checked their boots," he said. Thaksa-on Dechawanto, a 32-year-old vendor, said the first floor where she sells goods was packed with shops, but lacked a water sprinkler. "Without a good safety system, I will not rent space there again," Mrs Thaksa-on said. Hat Yai mayor Prai Pattano said the bomb's strength was unprecedented for Hat Yai. Local authorities assumed initially that a gas pipe had exploded. The response by emergency services was slower than it should have been. 'We had no rescue plan for such an emergency situation and the rescue mission was not quick enough. "I must apologise and will take this as a lesson to prevent such an incident from recurring," Mr Prai said.

... jeez, another one burned to death... sad for this young man, just starting out his life, on such an adventure, seeing the world. ... coming to Thailand is not the civilized destination it appears... highrise buildings constructed and operated under building codes that were appropriate for 3rd world lowrise development. ... I believe tourists here should view Thailand as 'adventure tourism' and make decisions accordingly... generally, I hate the idea of families coming to Thailand under the carefully crafted Thai illusion that their children are safe. ... tragedy here can happen here anywhere, at anytime, and to anyone... and it does.

... the Le Concorde Office and adjoining Swissotel Le Concorde Hotel this time... http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/Sprinklers-emergency-lights-help-firefighters-cont-30181806.html Sprinklers, emergency lights help firefighters control blaze The Nation May 12, 2012 1:00 am Firefighters managed to quickly control a blaze in the Le Concorde Office Tower in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district thanks to the building's efficient firealarm system, the district's director said. The fire crew was able to put the fire out half an hour after it broke out at 11.30am because the firesafety system included sprinklers and emergency lights, Chumpon Chaokoh said. Since the building is in the compound of the 25storey, 400room Swissotel Le Concorde, guests and staff ran out in panic, making the traffic on the already congested Ratchadapisek Road even worse. Hotel staff Dujduen Tienampai was rushed to Rama IX hospital due to breathing problems caused by smoke inhalation. Initial police investigation revealed that the fire had started inside a storage room in the basement of the office tower, leaving the hotel unaffected. Huai Khwang police chief, Pol Colonel Boonsong Namkorn, said the fire may have been caused by a spark from tripped circuit, which set fire to the inflammable items stored in the room. The cost of the damage has yet to be estimated.

Report from The Nation dated 17 August 2012 :- Four die in Phuket disco blaze ====================== A blaze at a popular Phuket discotheque in Patong early Friday morning reportedly killed four tourists and injured many others. Police have yet to identify whether the dead two men and two women are Thais or foreign. Phuket Wan online reported the fire that broke out at 3.55am, almost two hours after all bars and other venues in Patong are supposed to close, killing at least four people. The injured were sent to Patong Hospital for treatment. Firefighters fought the flames for about an hour before finally extinguishing the fire at the entertainment venue, which is in Katu district. Forensic police were able to enter the fire scene a short time ago to check the cause of the blaze. It is believed the bodies are still inside, the online news site reported. At Patong Hospital, authorities were unable to pinpoint precisely how many were injured in the fire, but a nurse did say that one man was critically burned and in danger. Four of those injured were French. All but two survivors were treated and released. Phuket Wan added that Patong is currently in the middle of an election campaign for mayor, with the incumbent, Pian Keesin, standing again and hoping to win on September 2. Meanwhile Kanyaporn Khanthong, told reporters that she and her friends were in the crowded discotheque at about 2.30am when somebody yelled out "fire". "However, nobody heeded the warning and continued enjoying the music and drinks. Shortly after that smoke was seen in the venue. Then, the ceiling bulbs fell to the ground," she said. She ran and tried to leave the premises but found herself stuck at the exit because of the crowds. "I was helped by foreign tourists and managed to escape," said Kanyaporn who was injured in the fire. Phuket Wan quoted the manager of the Tiger Discotheque, Tamrongsak Boonsak, as saying the fire broke out about 2am. "People heard two bangs and it was originally thought that these came from further down Soi Bangla. We will do what we can to help those who have been injured and to help the families of those who have died." He estimated damage at Bt100 million and said that investigating police would have full cooperation.

... reading back through this thread, seems that if there is going to be a fire in Thailand, somebody is going to burn alive... the only exception was a Saturday afternoon office building fire, the owners of which were investigated for arson.
