to qualify...there are on spaces for 402 taxis in the taxi rank at the transport centre.

At this time, the OFFICIAL transport report says that

a) no taxis will be allowed to pick up at the terminal
b) and these are the exact words of the report

Drop Off Area: at departure (level 4) outer curb
Condition: leave immediately with no exception.

Now then....where the 2500 turning into 10000 comes from I do not know.....

The report also says

Car Condition: Less that 5 years with RFID equipped
Driver Condition: Certified by AOT

maybe that is the number that will increase, but there are surely more than 2500 taxis of less than 5 years in BKK.

Remember

"Climate Of Fear"
"Too Late to Turn Back"

23 out of 90 airlines on CUTE (at 6/9/06)

They just say that they scrapping the TAXI terminal idea you can not take a taxi from the airport. Great they just wasted another billion on a TAXI terminal and now no one going to use it. I am sure the people bought lease there must be 100 % exited about that.

How devious can folks get?
It had to be obvious that a Taxi Terminal would not work from day one of the design.

SO
Who's idea was it ?
What do they currently own?
What are the plans like to have a hotel built on the site?

IF
The taxi terminal is shelved who wants a bet on who/what will be built on the Taxi Terminal?

Maybe a subject for a new thread?

Airport taxis to be increased to 10,000
Can pick up, drop off, surcharge to be levied

AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK

The Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) has put up a large billboard advertising Suvarnabhumi airport at Don Muang airport ahead of the changeover on Sept 28. — APICHIT JINAKUL

The number of taxis operating out of Suvarnabhumi airport will be increased from 2,500 to 10,000 and those dropping passengers off will be allowed to take passengers on return trips, said Deputy Transport Minister Chainant Charoensiri yesterday. He said the measures were meant to provide more service choices for passengers and boost transportation convenience for them.

Gen Chainant's decision was apparently made in response to concerns raised by many people that they would have a hard time finding taxis to take them from the city to the airport.

Earlier, authorities said taxis operating out of the airport would have to register with the airport authority and non-registered cabs would not be allowed to pick up passengers from the airport.

However, Gen Chainant said the Airports of Thailand (AoT) is likely to collect a 100 baht surcharge per trip from cabs taking passengers from the airport. He said he would hold a meeting today with representatives from the Land Transport, AoT and agencies responsible for public transportation to discuss transportation problems at the airport.

The AoT has planned to set up a business unit responsible to provide public transport services.

AoT president Chotisak Asapaviriya said so far the agency has not yet issued an announcement on cab surcharges. But the rate may be 100 baht per trip.

The surcharge would provide more convenience to passengers as they would not have to wait for cabs for so long, said Mr Chotisak.

Gen Chainant's statement came after caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said yesterday the government would urgently tackle transportation problems at the airport.

Taxis picking up passengers from the terminals would be registered and their number would be increased to meet demand.

Mr Suriya also said the authorities would ensure that Suvarnabhumi airport would be a mafia-free zone and those mafia figures or gangs who planned to move their base from Don Muang airport to the new airport would face a severe crackdown. He said he has instructed Gen Chainant not to allow the presence of any mafia people or gangs at the new airport.

Meanwhile, Land Transport Department chief Piyapan Champasut said he disagreed with the AoT's plan to set up a business unit to operate public transport services, saying public transport should not be business-oriented.

He also opposed any move to collect parking fees from state-run Bangkok Mass Transit Authority's passenger buses and buses operated by the Transport Co. The planned collection of parking fees would discourage passenger buses from picking up passengers at the airport.

Opas Phetmunee, acting director of BMTA, said his agency will operate three more bus routes to the new airport: a 41.5km route between the southern bus terminal and Suvarnabhumi airport, Wong Wian Yai to Suvarnabhumi covering 53km and Central Plaza Rama II to the new airport covering 48km.

The fares will be collected based on travelling distance with the maximum fare of 35 baht.

A public relations campaign for the new routes will be launched on Sept 25, said Mr Opas.

Who needs a mafia when AOT are busy fleecing everye anyway. YEt another price increase for everyone using the arport. - Tax from 500 to 700, and now an extra 50 BT on the taxi fare.

Keeping the mafia out... yeah right - as they have sucesfully kept it out of every other area of thai life?

I had read that article, but it still begs the question....2500 what....becomes 10,000 what?

taxi's allowed to enter at one time? allowed to queue on the concourse? allowed to park at the taxi centre?

I acn only assume eligible to go there, in which case the original 2,500 out a BKK taxi fleet of 100,000 was very small......presumably belong to those companies own by those who are in the gang, I mean loop.

here Here......some of the stuff I've heard you just couldn't make up......

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 14 September 2006 :-

THAI plans to test second round of international flights
==========================================

Thai Airways International (THAI) will conduct a second round of international flights through Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sept 22 to test its readiness ahead of the Sept 28 airport opening.

Four flights on three routes normally operated through Don Muang, will fly to Seoul and Beijing and from Guangzhou, through Suvarnabhumi instead for the test day only.

Unlike the first round of international test flights on the Bangkok-Hong Kong and Bangkok-Singapore routes on Sept 1, which involved mostly THAI staff and their families, the second round will involve paying passengers.

The national carrier will use Airbus A300-600 and A330-300 aircraft, each with around 250 seats, and will soon accept bookings.

A THAI executive confirmed yesterday that the test flights were part of a series of exercises aimed at familiarising passengers as well as the airline's personnel with the facilities at the new 125-billion-baht airport to ensure a smooth start-up of full-scale THAI services at Suvarnabhumi on the big day.

The national carrier is due to begin offering domestic flights tomorrow from Suvarnabhumi on three routes, with a total of five flights a day.

Chosen because of limited flight connection requirements, the three routes are Suvarnabhumi-Phitsanulok (three flights), Suvarnabhumi-Ubon Ratchathani (one flight), and Suvarnabhumi-Chiang Mai (one flight).

THAI operates more than 200 flights a day on its network that covers 70 destinations in more than 30 countries. It operates more than 80 aircraft.

Meanwhile, Jetstar Asia, the Singaporean budget carrier owned by Qantas of Australia, is set to become the first among some 80 foreign carriers to operate through Suvarnabhumi starting tomorrow.

Jetstar Asia said the decision formed part of a deliberate move to gain momentum for an expedient and smooth transition in the relocation to Suvarnabhumi from Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang).

Jetstar Asia will operate three Airbus 320 flights per day from Singapore to Bangkok.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 15 September 2006 :-

Plans to ease traffic before airport opens
===============================

The Transport Ministry is preparing a series of measures to ease anticipated traffic jams on the roads leading to the new Suvarnabhumi airport in the run-up to its commercial opening on Sept 28. Deputy Transport Minister Chainant Charoensiri said the toll on the Eastern Outer Ring Road from Tap Chang tollgate to the airport would be waived from Sept 25 to April 25.

The ministry also asked the Highway Department to temporarily halt all construction work on the ring road from Sept 25-30. The construction is to expand the four-lane ring road to eight lanes.

In addition, the ministry was seeking cooperation from Bangkok Expressway (BECL) to lower the toll on its expressway from Srinakarin tollgate to the new airport from 25 baht to 20 baht. The ministry expected BECL to respond to its request before the airport's opening.

Gen Chainant said traffic was expected to be extremely heavy on Sept 27 and 28 when airline and airport workers are due to move their operation bases from Don Muang airport to Suvarnabhumi.

If necessary, he said, some stretches of the outer ring road would be closed at certain times on those two days to facilitate the relocation to the new airport.

To accommodate passengers going to the new airport by taxi, 12 taxi centre operators have agreed to mobilise up to 10,000 taxis to serve them on a daily basis, Gen Chainant said.

But the taxi drivers must undergo training and register with the airport first or they will not be allowed to pick up passengers at the airport.

The Land Transport Department will open at least 10 new routes for minibuses to take passengers from around Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi. At present, more than 500 minibus drivers are ready to serve the new routes, said Chairat Sanguansue, the department's deputy chief.

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday spoke enthusiastically about Suvarnabhumi airport in a pre-recorded television interview aired yesterday. He said, among other things, that the airport would become the world's largest when it is fully operational.
