Skytrain resumes operation

Source: The Nation

Operator of skytrain, the BTS, has started feeding trains into the system and will fully resume providing services at about 10am today, BTS advisor Anat Aphaphirom said at 9.20am in a live interview via telephone with TPBS.

Mr Anat affirmed that all tyres placed on rails at Chidlom station have been removed out by the red-shirt protesters.

Kwanchai Praiphana a core leader of the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) said he had ordered security guards of red-shirts to remove out the tyres from the Chidlom station.

He insisted that UDD had no plan to block operation of the skytrain or the subway as it does not want to cause any hardship to the commuters. He assured that UDD leaders will oversee to ensure that there will be no obstruction of the mass transit rail systems in the future.

Reading your article from the Post it seems to me that the Royalists and/or Military are setting up a scenario to allow for the total elimination of open elections and substitute a single party Meritocracy (ala China) in its place.

This way they will not have to worry about the working class poor electing the wrong candidates ...

... for those who might be interested in a deeper understanding of the structural problems here, I recommend the articles below... very good analyses, far better than what most popular international media outlets are attempting.

... a couple from the The Economist (naturally, banned from Thailand under threat of lese majeste)... one from a very turned-on Thai editorialist that posts in the BKK Post each Sunday... one from a very well written blog.

... about 20 minutes of reading in all... worthwhile:

... for all his criminal ways, Thaksin has helped the commoners discover fire... now, let's just hope they don't burn the place to the ground.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 27 April 2010 :-

UTCC: B90bn in lost revenue from protests
================================

Ongoing political strife has yet to significantly affect employment, but it is stunting growth, according to a survey by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

The survey also estimated the lengthy mass rallies at Ratchaprasong intersection and Ratchadamnoen Avenue have resulted in 60-90 billion baht in lost revenue for mainly hotels, department stores and the tourism sector.

It added that the protest will cut the country’s gross domestic product by 0.4-0.6%. That figure would rise to 0.6% to 1% lower economic growth should the protests last another three months, costing the country as much as 140 billion baht.

“We are going to revise our economic forecast in May,” said Thanavath Phonvichai, an economist at the university. It earlier projected economic growth of 3-4% this year, but this did not take into account political risks.

Mr Thanavath urged the government to speed up the disbursement of economic stimulus spending under the Thai Khem Khaeng programme and also accelerate aid measures for tourism operators and small and medium-sized enterprises that have been hard hit by the protests.

The government is also being urged to manage the baht to stand at about 32 baht per dollar until June to enable the government to achieve export growth of about 15-20% in order to offset losses from political chaos at home.

The research house also urged the central bank to maintain low interest rates in the first half to bolster the economy. It forecast the unemployment rate to stand at about 0.9-1% of the total workforce, or about 380,000-400,000 this year.

The labour survey found most workers are not yet gravely concerned over unemployment, but many see fewer job opportunities.

Some 82.6% of the 1,212 respondents expect the protests will definitely weaken the economy.

Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 27 April 2010 :-

BTS trains will run from 6 am to 8 pm until further notice
===========================================

Bangkok's Skytrain system will start its services from 6am to 8 pm from Wednesday instead of 6 am to midnight.

"Our services will operate as normal between 6am and 8pm," Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) director Dr Anat Arbhabhirama said Tuesday, "We plan to keep this schedule from April 28 onward".

So far, he did not rule out the possibility of an abrupt change.

In an announcement posted on the BTS web site, Anat said BTS might change the schedule if any emergency arose.

today at 6pm at asoke station, lots of soldiers in full combat gear, and some singing some stupid karaoke song about all the colors of shirt being this being this, being that, but all being 100% Thai...
Thai style brainwashing ?

Me think maybe not the brightest idea to do this in a place where there is NO redshirts at all but a lot of tourists, but hey, seem like the masterplan is to get rid of the evil farang once and for all so its OK

One funny headline I came across reads :

"Thaksin Claims He is Not Dead"

So next, I imagine, an analyst would get down to arguing that Thaksin's claims are wrong . Thaksin is wrong in claiming that he is not dead.

Hmmmm....

Depends on the context of the statement Kaymanx.

Is it Thaksin is claiming not to be dead as a state of being or is he claiming not to be dead politically.

State of being is obivious but his political death is debatable...
