Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 28 April 2010 :- Businesses rocked by fresh clashes ===================== Fresh clashes between security forces and anti-government protesters on the outskirts of Bangkok will only increase the pressure on businesses and the Thai economy, particularly the troubled tourism sector, executives say. The confrontation, which took place on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in northern Bangkok, claimed the life of one soldier and resulted in more than a dozen injuries. Reports of the clash spurred sharp selling in the stock market and fresh worries among business leaders. "Tourism promotion and image-making campaigns for Thailand will be useless for the time being, as no one knows when and how the political crisis will end,'' said Charoen Wangananont, spokesman for the Federation of Thai Tourism Associations (Fetta). "Thai tourism is already at the rock bottom. No matter what is about to happen, more countries are banning their people from visiting Thailand.'' The Tourism Authority of Thailand's latest report stated that 10 foreign countries _ Saudi Arabia, Spain, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Czech Republic, Taiwan, Germany and the United Kingdom _ have advised their citizens against all non-essential travel to Thailand. The advice reflects growing concerns that widespread violence could break out during the increasingly volatile political crisis.

I do not see how this is going to get better on the tourist front, BBC and many other news outlets are reporting the troubles, Who is going to book a holiday with family when bullets are flying ? its a pity because the workers at Hotels etc will be hit hard again, I see no peaceful end to this one, the Red shirts do not act like the yellow shirts and will not go away without a fight BK

THE LAY OF THE LAND AS AT THURS, 29 APRIL ... as the news reports, Thai military and police mounted a major effort against protesters on multiple fronts throughout yesterday and last night. ... the police and military presence on streets and major intersections last night was highly visible... on mid- and upper-Sukhumvit... however, traffic moved as normal... no check points. ... BTS continues operating on limited hours (6.00a-8.00p)... beginning last night and again this morning, the BTS has maybe 30-50 military and police patrolling the walkway levels of each station... armed with light weapons, and suited-up with body armour. ... except for the unusually bad street traffic, the daily rhythms of BKK life beats as normal in areas away from the clearly identified hot zones... taxis, restaurants, shops, malls, cinemas, etc. ... because of Patpong's proximity to the Lumpini/Silom protest site, I might avoid it... if the shit comes, Patpong will surely be affected... haven't made the evening rounds of Nana or Soi Cowboy, but as they are not proximate to Red-occupied protest sites, I sense they are operating as normal (maybe someone can offer recent first-hand intel). ... as at today, were I contemplating a trip here, I'd still come... I would, however, be very particular about where I chose to stay, favoring properties away from Red-occupied areas and close to a BTS/MRT station (so to avoid surface street travel).

Passed by Nana, day before yesterday in the evening, everything appeared normal to me.

Quote: from quack quack on 11:43 am on April 29, 2010 What are the Ratchda & Victory Monument areas like? Are the MRT / BTS outlets at these locations open to 8 PM?
... don't know for sure about Ratchada, but the MRT station there was not closed when partial closure of the BTS/MRT systems were ordered after the grenade attack at Saladaeng BTS. ... on her way to school, one of my Thai cubs passes over Victory Monument on the BTS... she reports even yesterday no protester occupation... Victory Momument is a venue to which the Reds periodically return to protest, but do not hold it beyond the duration of protest... so, I'd say "hit or miss."
Quote: from quack quack on 11:43 am on April 29, 2010 Is it possible to take ladies on metered taxis from (say) Cowboy to Ratchda?
... yes... but if your hotel is on Ratchada, why not make life easier and select a hotel on mid- to upper-Sukhumvit and eliminate the uncertainty altogether?
Quote: from quack quack on 11:43 am on April 29, 2010 Are air conditioned busses running more, or, less normally from Mo Chit?
... don't know.
Quote: from quack quack on 11:43 am on April 29, 2010 Considering the troubles in Bangkok, it might be better to spend one’s time at other venues.
... unless a person is just bound and determined to sport about here in BKK, I think that would be a good idea, just in case anything does errupt, segregating a sportsman from the main sporting venues. ... while unsuccessful to any substantial degree, so far, the Red Shirts began seeking to extend the conflict into the provinces... they caught a number of police and military camps unaware, temporarily blocking them from leaving barracks. ... I think the Red's effort to confine the provincial government forces en camp is largely squelched, since little more has been reported. ... I've read nothing about problems in Pattaya and Phuket, other than the now standard street scam artists, aggressive taxi mafia, rip-off mafia jet-ski operators, etc. ... (sigh)... ahhh, beautiful Thailand!... as a vacation venue, now far more like Mexico, than the Thailand we once knew... as a country, far more like sub-Saharan Africa, than the Thailand we once knew... as a society, far more like feudal 12th Century Europe, than the Thailand we once knew. ... (actually, those last 2 parts have always been true... just concealed behind the grand deception that is the delusional reality under which Thais labor, hiding behind radiant smiles and those so very sincere, gracious wais). ... so... Pattaya... Phuket... safer bets, sure.

... the UN just reported that the power to the entire complex was just cut-off... they are officially laying no blame, but they all suspect it is an attempt to raise the the UN's level of concern, hoping to win the deployment of UN peacekeepers to Thailand (jeez, these guys must have no idea of the UN's exemplary peacekeeping performnce in the Sudan, Ruwanda, Bosnia). ... there is progression of attacks on public infrastructure and civilian targets now... RPG attacks on the Din Daeng oil depot and Saladaeng BTS Station, piling tire barriers onto the BTS tracks, seizing large areas of public property and roadways, massive road blocks on the BKK outskirts and illegal searches of incoming cars (and the contents of bags and all) by armed protesters, threatening to lay seige to the Bangkok Bank HQ. ... while the government has largely succeeded in keeping to the civilians combatants from all out clashes with each other, seems to me these attacks on public infrastructure and civilian targets qualify the discussion of Thailand's status to be elevated to the edges of anarchy, or civil war, or failed state status.
