Well, they have 70 odd days to get the new airport up and running for my arrival. The UA rep said it will certainly be the new airport I arrive at in December and that everything should be calm by then. I'm not sure how much more she knows than the rest of us, but it seems likely enough. Don Muang was much more inline with the rest of ugly and gritty Bangkok though. Having a fancy looking airport in the middle of a stinking cess pool is a bit odd in my view. It's not like most airlines are flying their top metal to BKK anyway. Every time I've flown in/out of BKK it's been on some old dump of an aircraft from 2-3 decades ago.

Will they finnaly decide not to open this airport before its really finished now that there is no more arrogant prime minister to push this idea?
Or is it really "to late to turn back"?

Report fron Bangkok Post dated Thursday 21 September 2006 :-

Airport's opening still on for next Thursday ( 28.9.2006 )
==========================================

The new Suvarnabhumi airport's official opening will take place next Thursday as scheduled despite the Thaksin government's downfall, officials said yesterday. In a meeting with the agencies concerned yesterday, transport permanent secretary Wanchai Sarathulthat said that the airport's commercial opening would go ahead as planned.

All airlines have been instructed to relocate their operations from Don Muang airport to Suvarnabhumi and their winter flight schedules have been set, he said.

Setting a new opening date would cause chaos for airlines all over the world that plan to use the new international airport in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district, Mr Wanchai said.

Airlines must be informed at least 180 days in advance if the opening date is to be changed, he added.

Somchai Sawasdeepon, general manager of Suvarnabhumi, said the airport is now ready for full operation. There have been flights in and out of Suvarnabhumi since its soft opening last Friday, and their operators have no plans to switch back to Don Muang, he said.

Flight Officer Apinan Sumanaseni, president of Thai Airways International, said no scheduled THAI flights to Suvarnabhumi will be cancelled.

The national airline will resume moving its equipment from Don Muang to the new airport today, he added.

Thai AirAsia also said its scheduled flights to Suvarnabhumi will remain unchanged, while Bangkok Airways said it will go ahead with its plan to start flying out of the new airport today.

Well, realistically, you would have been 500 THB cheaper with the new airport, but since there's a surcharge for taxis grabbed from the new airport that amounts to close that same amount, you end up at the same price.

You could probably walk a couple of kilometers to a 'regular' taxi minding it's own business, and you'd save a bundle on that deal

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 22 September 2006 :-

Don Muang service hit by early shift of flights
==================================

The early move of some flights to Suvarnabhumi airport has taken its toll on the service at Don Muang, as some staff have already moved or been transferred to the new airport. An Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) official admitted the declining efficiency of services for passengers using Don Muang but said the problem was inevitable during the transitional period.

As the new airport's opening date had approached, more and more service staff had quit their jobs at Don Muang to apply for new positions at Suvarnabhumi, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Even more AoT officials had to be transferred to be trained in using new equipment at the new airport in preparation for the scheduled Sept 28 opening, the official said.

One problem encountered by passengers using Don Muang is a difficulty in finding luggage trolleys.

Prapaipan Rathamarit said she and her travelling companions were looking for trolleys and could not find one at Terminal 1 after arriving at Don Muang on a flight from Phnom Penh on Wednesday.

''My friend had to walk to Terminal 2 to get them,'' she complained.

Mrs Prapaipan suspected some trolleys might have been moved for service at Suvarnabhumi.

But the official said no trolleys at Don Muang were relocated to the new airport.

The problem was due to insufficient ground service staff to take responsibility for the matter, especially during peak periods when more flights landed at the airport, the official said.

AoT had outsourced the work to Thai Airports Ground Service Co but the ground service at Suvarnabhumi has been awarded to Bangkok Airways.

The firm operating at Suvarnabhumi needed workers and many of those working at Don Muang had resigned to secure their positions at the new airport, the official said.

The resignation of ground service staff began last month and the situation had become serious over the past two weeks, the official said

Just made a reservation at GP using their executive package which includes airport transfers. Normally first two nights cost 250 per night extra to cover transfer. That fee is up by an additional 400 per night from the new airport. Round trip transfer adds 1300 baht to 4 nights stay. Is is really that much further out? With the highway changes in the last few years the time from BKK to Soi 11 has gone from 1.5 to 2 hours down to 1/2-2/4 hour. What can we really expect from the new location?
