Thai PM says Bangkok flood threat receding Sat Oct 29, 2011 2:39am EDT By Jason Szep and Apornrath Phoonphongphiphat BANGKOK, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Receding floodwaters north of Bangkok have reduced the threat to the Thai capital, the prime minister said on Saturday, but a rise in coastal high tides in the Gulf of Thailand will still test the city's flood defences. "If things go on like this, we expect floodwater in Bangkok to recede within the first week of November," Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on national television. Bangkok's main waterway, the Chao Phraya River, overflowed its banks on Saturday in some areas during unusually high tides, flooding normally bustling Chinatown and streets around Bangkok's glittering Grand Palace and Temple of the Reclining Buddha, areas usually thronged with tourists................ Yingluck said the ebbing of floodwaters in northern provinces, thanks to the draining of water into the Gulf of Thailand through canals and pumps, had reduced the risk of large volumes of run-off water bearing down on Bangkok. The city sits only two metres (6 1/2 ft) above sea level. "In this critical situation, there is some good news for us. Our water-management plan went smoothly during previous days," Yingluck said. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/29/thailand-floods-idUSL4E7LT02L20111029 I hope, for LOS' sake, Yingluck has got it right now.

I guess all the rural peasant who's houses are built on stilts are the smart ones, then If this flooding is seasonal, I fail to see why everyone wants to build ground floor residences - heck, build elevated shops, sores and dwellings using the ground floor as a car park. (of course, this being Thailand, within 3 months such a ground floor will be quickly Kaen over by shops and squatters) I bet while Cupidy might be at Risk, Plaza Entertainment is doing fine, for example.

And this report says the city might just escape : Defences shielding the centre of Bangkok from a combination of floodwaters from the North and high tides from the South mostly held at critical peak tides on Saturday, but many suburban city districts remained submerged...... At 9am on Saturday and again just after the 6pm sunset, high tides pushed up the Chao Phyraya River, meeting the floods from the North right at Bangkok. And the intricate, makeshift system of watergates, floodgates, dams and hastily erected dykes largely held. Some water doused streets and shops along the riverside. But the tides were short of the highs predicted by the Royal Thai Navy. No major breaches were reported. Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Grand Palace and located right at the river bank, remained open for tourists. Some streets around the palace flooded at high tide, and water seeped into the grounds, but no major problem occurred inside the landmark. High tides will last until Monday, but are predicted to be even lower than Saturday's. GIS expert Dr Anond Sanitwong of the government's Flood Relief Operations Command (Froc) predicted the floods would be gone from Bangkok "in two to three weeks". If all BMA's flood walls continue to stand as well as on Saturday, floods will begin to recede by Tuesday (Nov. 1) and the water level in Bangkok's most flooded areas such as Bang Phlad will decline as the high tides also fall. Adisak Kantee, deputy director of the drainage department of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration put it succinctly if optimistically: "The situation is under control." Ms Yingluck said in her radio address that the government was trying to speed the drainage rate and water in the greater Bangkok area should recede within days. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/263706/all-of-thon-buri-faces-inundation Good live updates from readers in the above link.

Another update, apparently drawing on the same official feed: Bangkok flood defences hold off tides Todd Pitman And Thanyarat Doksone October 30, 2011 - 3:54AM http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-world/bangkok-flood-defences-hold-off-tides-20111030-1mpzw.html Defences shielding the centre of Thailand's capital Bangkok from the nation's worst floods in nearly 60 years mostly held during critical peak tides on Saturday, as the waters began to recede after killing almost 400 people. But the threat to central Bangkok was not over, the prime minister said, and the city's northern districts remained submerged along with much of the countryside. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra urged citizens to let the crisis run its course as the floodwaters slowly drain to the sea, with Bangkok lying in their path. The floods that have besieged central Thailand for weeks submerged entire towns across the country's heartland and closed hundreds of factories over the last two months....... Bangkok residents watched the city's dikes and sandbag barriers warily as the high tide pushing up the Chao Phraya River from the Gulf of Thailand peaked on Saturday morning. It had been described as the greatest test of the capital's flood defences since the northern deluge first approached Bangkok more than three weeks ago............ While downtown Bangkok was bone-dry and bustling, areas along the city's outskirts saw flooding spread. Seven of Bangkok's 50 districts -- all in the northern and western outskirts -- are heavily inundated. Eight other districts have seen less serious flooding.........

I would agree, but the Thai govt isn't exactly doing a top job to give tourists confidence - I mean, the FROC, their flood relief operations center, is flooded and their office is drowned at Don Mueang airport, and the government refuses to move it (instead, appointing a new *spokesperson*). "Heckuva job, Yingy!"
