Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 27 September 2006 :-

New airport all set to open at 3am tomorrow ( Thursday 28.9.2006)
=============================================
Everything is set for the opening of Suvarnabhumi airport, which will take over all commercial flights at 3am tomorrow.

The Council for Democratic Reform (CDR), led by deputy leaders navy commander-in-chief Admiral Sathiraphan Keyanont and air force commander-in-chief ACM Chalit Phukphasuk, visited the airport in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district ahead of the Thursday launch.

''Everything has been prepared,'' Admiral Sathiraphan said

ACM Chalit, assigned by the council to lead a committee responsible for the opening, said the CDR would provide all assistance to ensure that the process tomorrow was smooth.

The first flight to land at Suvarnabhumi is a Lufthansa cargo plane from Mumbai scheduled to arrive five minutes after the move from Don Muang. The first passenger flight will be Aerosit Airlines flight VV171 from Kiev, landing at 4.10am.

A Saudi Arabian Airlines cargo flight will be the first to leave the new airport at 5am. The first passenger flight departing Suvarnabhumi will be flight VV172 on its way back to Kiev.

Transport permanent secretary Wanchai Sarathulthat said the ministry was launching a campaign to inform the public about facilities at the airport and routes to Suvarnabhumi. All airport road signs had now been been installed with clearer directions for motorists, he added.

Airport and THAI officials will hold a farewell ceremony for Don Muang tonight.

Trouble on new airport's horizon? - Chance of bumpy ride for travellers
=============================================
Passengers passing through Suvarnabhumi Airport in the near future should not anticipate an entirely hassle-free experience, according to aviation experts. Experts warned of inevitable glitches as the countdown began to the official opening of Bangkok's 125-billion-baht airport in the early hours of tomorrow, and the closure of the 92-year-old Don Muang airport tonight.

''... It could take up to three months before everything falls into place,'' said Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, the founder and chief executive of Bangkok Airways.

''Of course we are nervous that Suvarnabhumi Airport might fail,'' said Tony Fernandes, chief executive of the budget carrier AirAsia.

''Every new airport will have problems. No matter how much you test [the facilities], there's nothing like the real thing,'' he added.

But he said he didn't expect any major problems for the new airport.

The most likely problems to emerge at Suvarnabhumi may be connected to the IT and baggage systems. Teething problems could occur when around 90 airlines actually start operating 700 flights and carrying about 110,000 passengers per day through the new facility.

A limited number of flights by a few airlines earlier this month, during the new airport's soft opening, was not enough to truly test its mechanisms. Although, even then, some hiccups occurred.

The most recent case happened on Monday, when one of the airbridges failed, forcing passengers of Thai AirAsia's 737-300 from Kuala Lumpur (flight FD 3572) to disembark via steps and transfer by bus to the terminal.

It then took nearly an hour for passengers of the same flight to retrieve their luggage due to some confusion about the assignment of carousels.

Because of the uncertainties surrounding the smooth running of Suvarnabhumi, most carriers have adopted a wait-and-see attitude and will not yet expand their operations and services from those previously provided at Don Muang.

Dr Prasert confirmed that Bangkok Airways operations would continue on a par with Don Muang, while Thai AirAsia chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld said the budget carrier would freeze its operations at the current level for the next few months until Suvarnabhumi operations had settled down.

Most airlines, including Thai Airways International, which operates the most number of services through Bangkok (around 200 flights a day) have made contingency plans in case of system failure.

I land at the new airport about 1pm on October 2nd.

Luckily a TGF, who I first met in the USA who is now a grad student at Mahidol, is picking me up. It will be her first trip to the new airport as well, so there should be a number of stories to tell.

When I have a chance, I will report out on what I find.

Computer glitches mar first full day at new Bangkok airport
The Nation - September 28, 2006

Passengers at Bangkok's new international airport Thursday faced delays in collecting their bags and checking in on the first full day of operations because of computer and mechanical glitches.

Thousands of passengers arriving on the first flights had to wait one hour to collect their bags as equipment was slow in arriving from the old airport, which closed during the night.

"The delay was caused by the delay of moving Thai Airways ground handling equipment from the old airport to the new one," said Chotisak Asapaviriya, president of Airports of Thailand, which operates the facility.

"It's just a minor error, and it will be the only one. We will never let this happen again," he said.

But at Thai Airways check-in counters, computers crashed before the first flights out of the new Suvarnabhumi Airport, causing delays as airline workers had to issue handwritten boarding passes and baggage claim tags.

That left long lines, but many passengers seemed prepared for delays on the first full day of operations, when some 800 flights will fly through.

"Today is the first day, so we don't expect anything to go well," said Paul Millar, a 46-year-old Briton who works in Bangkok.

"Fortunately we arrived early just in case," he said.

When it comes to software, never buy version 1.0, wait for 1.1 (after the bug fixes).

You cannot then work for the same company as I do.

Windows 95 bought and deployed within hours of being released.
Windows 2000 same same
Windows XP same same
Windows Vista rumoured will be also deployed same same.
also same same with the office releases
Crashes, lost data and lost email followed in short measure.
And now just to add insult we can do nothing to rectify silly glitches as no one has admin rights on any machins except the expert IT staff

I failto see this as earth shattering news, in fact getting your bags in an hour is an improvement of time that I usually got mine at Don Muang.
