News item re: Canada Thailand puts Canada on SARS high-risk listƯ Thailand has placed Canada on its list of countries seriously affected by an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and will subject visitors from the country to rigorous medical screening. "Those countries placed on the WHO list are placed on our list," Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said in reference to a list produced by the World Health Organization (WHO) of countries at high risk of the mystery disease.Advertisement Canada is the first country outside Asia on the list, which also includes China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Thailand has undertaken emergency measures to combat the disease. The measures include immediate quarantine for arriving air passengers showing symptoms of the virus, self-imposed isolation for Thais returning from high-risk areas, and the wearing of masks by foreign tourists arriving from those areas. Ms Sudarat also denied any new cases of the atypical pneumonia in the kingdom. She stressed that a Finnish International Labour Organisation (ILO) official who recently died of the disease in Beijing after traveling from Bangkok did not acquire the disease in Thailand. Pekka Aro, 53, succumbed to the disease in Beijing just weeks after spending a few days in Bangkok. Ms Sudarat said he was in Thailand from March 21 to 23. The health ministry has checked with serviced-apartment staff where he stayed as well as the 150 other ILO officials at the United Nations building, and found that none of them is sick with the disease. Thai officials have reported seven SARS cases. Two died, while the other five have recovered and been released. Three others in Thailand, including a Taiwanese tourist, are under observation for possible SARS, the health ministry said.

Ahhhhh. I can see clearly now the rain has gone. Anyhoo...... ************************************** Other steps people can take to protect themselves include avoiding travel to affected areas, particularly Hong Kong, Hanoi, Singapore and China, she said. "Unless you have to go, defer your trip," she said. Health officials have the greatest concern about China and Hong Kong, said Dr. David Heymann, executive director of communicable diseases for the World Health Organization. Hong Kong continues to report the most new cases, and in China the number of infected continues to increase in the Guangdong province ****************************************** In addition to TWD & As a public service to this thread please understand; 1) Al is Al Kiholic and viseversa. 2) It frequently baits and insults, trying to get a laugh. 3)Often posts shit that has nothing to do with anything 4)Seems to have abandoned persona of an alcoholic.

This SARS thing really shits me. Apart from the fact that they have no known cure and they have no test to detect it BUT they have already come up with an acronym for it. Typical. The lady I work with has just spent months planning a 6 week holiday to Europe in July - and she is seriously considering cancelling it because she has a 1 hour stopover in Singapore on the way there. I've been shaking my head a lot today. My neck is sore.
