Comparisons to Japan and S.Korea are ludicrous.
And the tip of the iceberg that I see, is the growing nationalism and scapegoating of foreigners, because of their visibility and bad behavior. ŬIn reality, just as in the sex-trade, Thais themselves account for the VAST majority of shenannigans, but it is just much easier to blame the more blatant, albeit MUCH smaller, collection of foreigners.
The 3-month drug war, and the hope that all the 'lost Japanese gold' in Kanchanaburi will save the economy are all examples of the 'quick fix' that so many pin their hopes on.
As for the probe of the big MPs and their relationship with the police, it will get a few headlines, and those responsible for 'uncovering' it will enjoy a hearty salute on their way to their next post - the traffic booth at Nana, probably.
Prices in the farang tourist areas will rise (they have already, significantly, though I don't want to raise the comparison to times gone by, for fear of being accused of using the "I was here back when..." ploy).
Can you blame them? ŬIf you had a popular, and underpriced, product, wouldn't YOU try to exploit it for it's realistic value?
It is, of course, a backward step, as is dual-pricing, and net censorship, etc. ŬBut it is THEIR country, and Thais are proud. ŬI only hope I live long enough to see the cycle come full circle.

After you being the bad ass you were a few months ago and me (being nice) arguing with you criticizing your attitude ... it seems roles have reversed.
I hate you looking nice while all along in the past you were a mean bad ass. And me? Look what has happened! My patience has gone short with the assholes. I liked it so much better in the past, when you were the bad guy and I was the one trying to get some sense into you.
Now, I almost always agree with you.
