Singlolo......."I am amazed at the amount of BS you can read on the same topic all around the Web." Well, there is no need to add to it is there then! As you have so ably put it.."We don't need you!" And 'we' do not need economic lessons thrown in with personal negativity about the P4P industry, or it's patrons. Perhaps it's time you got laid, and supported the economy. ps You have completely misconstrued the amount of exports to China. Thailand is far from being China's largest trading partner.

Power24, An easy way to trash the fantasy of "sex-tourism" being so important to the economy without going on the details is to consider the following: * How much of the tourism is sex-tourism? In other words, people that come to Thailand ONLY for p4p? Just look at your typical plane at Don Muang. * The p4p that most farangs frequent (go-go bars and some massage parlors) pales when compare to the Thai side of the industry. Now for some numbers: In 2002 (last year for which there are figures) there were 10.8 million visitors, which stayed on average 7.98 days abd who spent 3,754 Baht per day (all things included). This amounts to 323,484 million Baht (this is US$ 8.1 billion). With a GDP in the same year of $445.8 billion the above figures mean that if all 100% of the tourism was sex tourism, it still amounts to less than 2% of the total economy. Lets look at what 100% of tourism would meant relative to all Thai exports. For the same year of 2000 exports amounted to US$67.7 billion. Again, if ALL tourism was only sex-tourism, such revenue would be about 12% of all exports. But again, is it ALL sex tourism? Now, do you want me to get you the data for Colombia and coffee? is that another thing that you are just repeating? Or did you make that one yourself power24? In my opinion it is no excuse to say "I am just repeating what I read." One decides what to believe and what to repeat, and that is a reflection of how smart or stupid one may be. P.S.: Comparing a sector of the economy to the fiscal budget is no relevant. There are many reasons why the fiscal budget of a country could be small relative to its overall economy.

Quote: from power24 on 11:50 pm on Dec. 27, 2003 Smegma, Off the top of my head. The Rough Guide to Thailand, 4th edition, 2001 by Paul Gray and Lucy Rideout. p 158. : This was based upon a Chulalongkorn Univeristy study Night Market: Sexual Cultures and Thai Economic Miracle, Ryan Bishop and Lillian S Robinson. 1998 1st edition.
Off the top of your head you even know the page and the edition. Sorry, but hard to believe that you would know that...just like that (fingers snapping). BTW, I quote herebelow an editorial review about your source: In their examination of Thailand's sex industry, anthropologist Bishop and Robinson, a feminist scholar, rely overwhelmingly on reviewing the writings of others, with the sole exception of the chapter that provides a tour of selected areas of Bangkok where the sex industry operates. Their basic conclusion is that resolving the massive poverty in Thailand's northeast will eventually cut off the supply of workers to Bangkok's sex industry. The authors offer no discussion of the corruption or politics that allow prostitution to flourish and limit their focus to Westerners, failing to treat the patronage of prostitutes by Thai men or those aspects of Thai culture that have allowed the industry to develop. The final chapter, on sexual theory, derives solely from Western sources and hardly relates to the book itself. Recommended only for larger public libraries." For Library Journal, Donald Clay Johnson, Univ. of Minnesota Lib., Minneapolis. The book is so crapy that the reviewer recomends it only for large public libraries. A nice way to say that it is a waste of money.

Wow Smegma..your really going off the topic and completely missing the points made before my post. I edited my post after I typed " off the top of my head" to add page numbers and edition number etc. chill my friend Can you really disagree that even if the tourism industry contributed say...1% to Thailands economy that a clamp down on entertainment venues arent going to effect this proportion of its economic income? In the title of my post I wrote " social crusade gone mad"...maybe Ive got Smegma mad ?

Now you are talking about something different. But.... affecting individual interest groups... is just for those groups to worry. Regulations in general create economic inefficiencies that are later taken advantage by some other smaller groups. Anyway, many places in farangland have also inconvenient closing hours. If I remember well, night entertainment venues in the city of Boston, Massachusetts close at 1am during weekdays, and at 2am on Friday and Saturday. And Boston is a fine city.... with so many young students (memories of a young age come to mind)

Quote: from power24 on 8:27 pm on Dec. 27, 2003 ...getting back to my original point is whether people agree that the 1am closing is the first step in many towards n eventual closing down of this industry.
Disagree again! The sex industry has never been 'closed down' ANYWHERE in the world, even in the most religiously fundamentalist and oppressed countries. Good, will always win out! There will be changes, but ONLY as many as necessary to support the posturing of whatever the current politicians, and only as needed to satisfy the f*cking world press. While the economic consequences are incredibly less than you've quoted, the effect on ancilliary services, i.e. transportation, hotels, restaurants, etc. are still sufficiently large enough that their lobbies will most certainly keep the politicians from going over the top, as will the many other more real and pressing social problems. So not to worry. Two a.m. or 1 a.m., TGs will remain God's loveliest and most desirable creations, and after-hours places will just get started an hour earlier. And if not, where's the beef in an extra hour, or two even, of high quality sack time?
Quote: from Singlolo...I can understand that cheap Sex Tourist that Hardly spend 2000 Bath a night are mad with the Social Order Crusade but We don't need you ! Stay home thanks ! I have been enjoying Thailand for the last 8 Years and the less I see cheap sex tourist hanging around Sukhumvit the better. Seth
WRONG!!! As Smegma pointed out, the AVERAGE tourist spends 3,754 per day, but I will guarantee you that the sex tourist pumps CONSIDERABLY more (Baht that is) into the economy, probably twice what the average tourist spends daily, enough to feed and house a Thai family for a month. And as for 'cheap', it is not the farangs around Sukhumvit that deserve your vitrol, but most Thai nationals, who perpetuate the cheapest of brothels, and most despicably of child slavery. Methinks you need to redirect that anger, bro. Smegma, Right on - as usual! (except when you disagree with moi).

Smegma, Your opinions are so cryptic you would make an excellent candidate for the Thai Rak Thai Party. Just because we do things in certain ways in farangland (such as 11pm closing of entertainment venus in the UK) doesnt make it correct. The majority of Europe is of the mind that people decided when they want to stop enjoying themselves and not the government. and Ciao..its good to see from your posts that Im provoking a little bit of a debate over the closing time adjustments. Closed down...suppressed call it what you will. Again looking at the UK as an example of a country where an almost non-existent p4p scene exists...yes it does exist but because of the strict laws it exists out of most peoples reach....hows that for cryptic smegma?
