Here's my questions:

- Who are 'they' that have passed the law? This affects Pattaya ONLY, and doesn't seem to come from the central gov't (the provincial gov't is mentioned).

- Who specifically IS this gov't?

- How can we, the guests, send this gov't the required message so that they 'get it', that this is hurting their business?

Bear in mind, I feel that this is a large scale TEST to see how such early closing times will affect things, if at all - if they see no changes (or if they can pretend that there are none), then they might/will proceed.

So, what can we actually do? Realistically
(Bitching about it or calling on our UFO friends does not count

You may have seen in another thread in this section that I have cancelled my March trip to Thailand based upon the potential revision in closing times. I am using my fall back countries of Cambodia and Phillipines until the end of the year when all this madness will have hopefully blown over.

I dont think this sort of action will cause a change in policy as accoring to other members on this board tourists opinions matter very little to thai policy change. This is just my choice as at this moment in time as I 'personally' think other countries may be offering more for me.

So, in other words, no one is willing to consider or even think about what can be done, but quite bitching in private forums is okay?

Seriously, guys, the question is not rocket science - this isn't about what us tourists can do (arguably, very little), but what can be done to indicate that the experiment has failed.

Definitely, the gov't getting less money would be a direct inidcator (as that is what they want, more money, I presume), but are there other means - media exposure, etc...

Personally, I couldn't care less about midnight closing -- just means that I'll get my business done sooner, or just ask my friend to head out to BKK to join me.

Still, I'm a strategic activist kinda guy, and I know there has to be some means to get the message across.

from what I understand, at the meeting in Pattaya the local business owners vented their views and feelings very strongly but this did not seem to make any difference, what ideas have you got Harry?

JackRabbit present...

TO BE CONSIDERED AS A EXPRESSION OF MIND, NOT AS AN INSULT AGAINST THAI LAWS OR PEOPLE.

How about giving it a load of publicity ?

Every country has evening papers and there is a note "tip us for news".
I already checked the local ones for that.

Recruiting members of other boards to join this campaign, too.
I think that some members of this board are also members of other ones, too.

It is fair to let peoples know that they are cattled to bed around midnight and they do not decide when they have the fun they like.

Besides Thailand is a hot topic for press now.I believe this will take wind.

How about, shall we make this and help our fellow citizens to plan their holidays ?

Well I was speaking to a few bar owners here in Pattaya last night about the proposed changes and some didn't seem worried and others were predicting the end of the world. Many thought it wouldn't be strictly enforced whereas others thought it would. It really is hard to say but if it hits them hard enough in the pocket surely commonsense must prevail and revisioins made in line with reasonable parameters.

Personally I think the introduction of midnight closing will be self-defeating and quickly reversed.

Consider the following..

(1) The main aim of this proposal is to protect young thais - in particular the daughters. (Thaksin's son was caught taking drugs in Australia and whisked backed to Thailand). With midnight closing, the daughters will be far more likely to go back to their friend's house for a drink, a spliff and then some nookie. Thais are not going to like these consequences.

(2) Places like Sukhumvit 0-22 - already the largest open air whore house in the world - will become a zoo. No-one but no-one is going to like that.

(3) Big and important guys are going to see a very large hole in their pocket as bar/night club spend dries up. They will apply strong pressure to have early closing policy reversed.

Bring it on - it wont last long!!

My biggest fear is that they will introduce a compromise of 1.00am which would probably be enforceable.

If the 12 o'clock closing does happen how does this effect those establishments that were placed into the newly established entertainment zones or has the idea of zoning not happened and gone south?

And therefore, are we onto a new game of keep the tourist guessing about when to drink (closing times), what to eat (chicken fiasco), who to fly with (AirAsia's - inaugural flight- oops stuck flaps turnaround problems), and so on.

Was it not simpler when we could just argue about having to pay more to get into a national park.

Guesses on the next drama, please.

Zoning has only been muted and has never happened.

Most bars are supposed to close (under their license) at midnight so no new law is necessary.

Hotels should be exempt (under their license) - good for places like CM2, Spasso, 87, Rivas etc.. 7/11s will become new open air post midnight hang outs.

Bloody hell - it sounds grim
