I doubt very much that there will be a lawsuit. More than likely, the government contracted out its gate services to a third party who will not be able to sue the US based on the fact that they were to provide the security for the outer perimeter (hard to sue someone for bad security when you are the one who is supposed to provide security). These employees of this third party typically do not have much recourse since they are not covered by US laws (third party probably not a US company).

All embassies are soverign i.e. a US Embassy anywhere in the world is always on US teritorry. The family members of non-terrorists that were killed or injured and were employed by the US government (only 2 were security guards I believe) might be able to argue that in these extraordinary circumstances the US government had a duty to protect their employees so they "might" be able to sue the US government for a dereliction. I'm not sure if it would come to that though 'cause I'm bettin' that the US government will be paying out money to "all" of the families anyway, wont they? Cheers

As usual,.com doesn't know jack shit about which he speaks. The exterior protection of the Consulates and the Embassy in Riyadh is done by Saudi government authorities. Saudi National Guard, Marines, etc. These are active duty Saudi personnel. If any are killed, the deaths are handled in accordance with local customs and laws. Interior protection at the Embassy is handled by the US Marines but the Consulate in Al-Khobar had no US Marine presence inside. I am sure the one in Jeddah had no interior US Marine protection either. I understand this has now been corrected and there is now an interior US Marine force stationed permanently at both Consulates. Anybody that is killed inside the Consulate are likely locally hired third country nationals and are considered employees of the US government. Since there were no Americans killed, this would seem to be the case. Any of these deaths would be handled and recompensed in accordance with Saudi Labour Law and the General Organization for Social Insurance (GOSI). Why GOSI you ask? Because they were killed at work and GOSI covers all workers compensation for foreign born nationals injured or killed on the job site. I had one of my employees shot and killed by Al Qaeda last year so I know this subject from rather sad personal experience. Machine/Brocher. Did these terrorists have on police or military uniforms and were they driving an officially marked vehicle? This seems to be the way they get past the first check points. They just talk their way in. You guys keep your heads down...preferably in some nice young things lap.

"Machine/Brocher. Did these terrorists have on police or military uniforms and were they driving an officially marked vehicle? This seems to be the way they get past the first check points. They just talk their way in. " My sources (The Arab News and The Saudi Gazette ) tell me that they were in an unmarked vehicle and they weren't wearin' recognisable uniforms. They approached the barrier behind another car that was entering the compound legitimately and tried to bump the rear of this vehicle to force them both through. The barrier held so they got out and shot two security guards, tossed a few handgrenades into the compound and ran in. By this time the US staff and a few others had managed to "repair to the drawing room" whilst all hell broke loose in the compound! There's a safe room (probably under ground) that was part of the emergency plan if they were attacked but either some folk didn't know about it or couldn't get to it in time and were taken hostage or shot. It's reported that there was a squad of Marines "the diplomatic security team and the regional security team" in a building that the terrorists concentrated their fire on. The Chinooks arrived and dropped in a few more troops and after over 4 hours, that was that! The CG said in an interview on the 8th that 2 US staff members were injured during the attack. Cheers PS. The CG is rather cute. I've met her twice, before the attack that is!

Thanks Brocher: It all sounds reasonable and very workable. I haven't been to the Jeddah Consulate in years but the one in Khobar has.50's mounted all over and could be a formidable place to get into. I didn't realize the Consulate now had US Marines there. They did not have them in August when I left country. Our compound north of Dammam had 2 humvees, 2 sandbagged positions (with.50's at each place) and about 30 Saudi Marines and Naval military police. Contrary to what cnn, nbc, cbs, etc are putting out, the Saudi's I dealt with were very intent on securing our safety. Unfortunately for my guy that was shot, they didn't get serious about it until it was too late. Stay away from the go-gos over there. Work on the CG but always ride in her armored limo.

"Stay away from the go-gos over there. Work on the CG but always ride in her armored limo" The CG's hubby is Stateside due to the directive that all US Embassy/Consulate dependents have to stay outside KSA, so she needs some comfortin', eh! The marines were a "very" recent addition as was all the "extra" folk that were patrolin' the Consulate area 2 or 3 days before the incident, they couldn't have had any prior knowledge could they? Cheers

Quote: from dotcom on 3:22 am on Dec. 10, 2004 You will need to put on your thinking caps to work out this riddle.
Actually, not really.
Quote: from dotcom on 3:22 am on Dec. 10, 2004 You go to work one morning. While at work you get murdered. Your employer is the Government of The United States of America. Do your survivors (family) have a lawsuit?
No, they don't - at least not against the gov't of the USA. The only times any survivors might have a reasonable chance at a lawsuit of such type, would be if gross-negligence could be proven on the part of the gov't that allowed you to be murdered, or if the US gov't participated knowingly in this murder. Neither was the case in this case: - the fortification of the consulate more than adequately precluded gross negligence. - Outside security for embassies and consulates is always provided by the host country, thus in this case, the Saudi Gov't. If any lawsuit were to be brought, it would be against the Saudi Gov't - and that's not going to happen - besides, more than likely the US gov't will quickly compensate next of kin for their losses. I hear such costs are far less expensive in that part of the world. Don't quite understand where your intense animosity in your posts comes from as of late, but at least check your facts, please.
