The Ice Age ended a mere 8-10 thousand years ago, and the earth has warmed considerably since then (this has nothing to do with greenhouse gases produced by humans except for perhaps 1/4 degree C of the total warming of over 10 - 15 degrees C). So it is safe to say that eventually, some low lying areas will be flooded. How long is "eventually" is open to debate. Of course the temperatures on earth could change the other way (as they have many times in the past 6 billion years) and much of the northern hemispheres will be covered with glaciers once again. It will happen, but I can't tell you when.

I currently live in Long Island, NY usa. It was created by debis deposited from the glaciers of 2 ice ages. Do you think we could stop ice age #3 nevermind 4 or 5?? Maybe any global warming we create could slow the next ice age, or not. I love it when we trend tempuratures over the past 100 years and make predictions based on it. It would be like checking your bank balance every.000000001 seconds to determine your financial future.

Mr Alan, I agree with you about Global warming. It is probably cyclic ? The reason I got interested in La Palma was because for the last few years I have had these weird dreams about my local area surrounded by waves and water. If the 'La Palma' thing happened London would indeed be inundated. Thames barrier or not. As would most of the low parts of Europe which is not good news for Amsterdam. I really hope it does not happen. Maybe the dreams were caused by the books I read in the 1970's ? Many years ago at school I learned that if the Earth was shrunk to the size of a football it would have the consistency of treacle on a cold day ! Henry Ford said,"History is bunk !" Georges Santayana said,"Those that fail to learn the lessons of History are destined to repeat the same mistakes over and over again?" Emmanuel Velikovsky was very controversial about his theory that an asteroid wiped out the Dinosaurs. That theory is more accepted now. I believe that humans are puny in the face of the force of nature and nature looks after herself. Many years ago in the Indian Ocean there was an island that had 10X Deer. Now this 10X ratio was perfect for the area of land for the deer to exist on. Then there was a population explosion and the deer land ratio went up to maybe 60X or 70X? Anyway it was a lot more deer than before. The balance had changed but not in a good way. Too many deer for the small island. Then one day many of the deer died. Without reason. They died back to the 10X number. The correct ratio had returned. Nature had taken a hand ! 'Some' people believe that there are too many humans. I don't know. But that story about the deer keeps coming back to me. Nature took a hand. It looks after itself. I hope a warning system based on this technology is soon in place. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A35068-2004Dec29.html
