Actually Bamboo Scaffolding done correctly is better than steel (up to a certain height), ask anyone who has used it (I have had climb and use both!). It has a natural give and usually does not have the "house of cards" effect that Steel Scaffolding does, that is it suddenly collapses due to a single failure. The problem now is that it is a dying art and that good "constructors" of this type of structure are getting rare in many parts of Asia.

Hmmm. I've heard that before. I'd love to see some stats. The first time I visited HK there was bamboo scaffolding up around a 30-odd story building (they looked like they were replacing windows or fascias or something). I was there four days and four people fell off. I took quite a few pictures of the scaffolding because I couldn't believe how rickety it looked. Showing the pics to an architect and a civil engineer produced the same sharp intake of breath, and practically the same comment 'It's dirt cheap and if people get killed it doesn't really matter...' (i.e. life is cheap in some places.)

I had a discussion with a group of expats who have been working in Thailand in all industries, most marrried to Thais and they agreed that indeed Thais are half arsed when undertaking any activity. Even the Thais agreed. I also made a survey of my office, comprising 30+ Thais and they agree that they are half arsed. Comparing Americans (advanced???) with Thais is hardly fair as most Americans have no idea where Thailand is (nor any country apart from Canada, and maybe Iraq).
I've watched the Simpsons mate and if Homer is any indication of the average American, then I can only conclude that Americans are half arsed also.

you watch too much cartoons ! I think the Looney Tunes more resemble average American ! Waht's up, Doc ?
