some very good/informative responses. having recently attended a conference where attendees broke off and spoke formally about the avian flu...i add these highlights.

if the current strain does not mutate in a manner making it transmitable person-2-person, then there is no significant concern. that said, the death rate in humans right now is approx 40-50% of those infected. not good.

if it turns p2p, then likely, you're f***ed.

Hey Duck,

I looks like your travel options will be limited this year:

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/conditions/10/21/birdflu.main.hk/index.html

By the way, have you coughed or sneezed yet? Actually I bet you would not tell me anyway. Maybe I should just call the CDC now. I sure that they will be more humane is slaughtering Ducks in the US than in Asia. I mean none of this stuffing into plastic bags and burying alive type crap.

On the other hand this is the Bush Administration and the bag and bury method is probably the cheapest option...

5. How can I tell the difference between having avian flu and SARS?

You cannot differentiate between avian flu and SARS by
symptoms alone. Confirmation of diagnosis will depend
on laboratory tests on clinical samples from the patient.

It is good pointing that out. Many people have forgotten and now mix and confuse the two.

QUOTES:

"Sars is now known to be caused by the SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV), a novel coronavirus. SARS has a mortality rate of around 10%."

"Antibiotics have not proven to be effective against SARS. Treatment of SARS so far has been largely supportive with anti-pyretics, supplemental oxygen and ventilatory support as needed."

"H5N1 is a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza (bird flu). Outside of China 118 cases of human infection have been confirmed resulting in 61 deaths outside of China, all of which were in Southeast Asia and nearly all of which have been shown to have been contracted from chickens." (fatality rate 52%)

"Neuraminidase inhibitors are a class of drugs which act on a protein conserved in all influenza A viruses. Drugs of this type include zanamivir and oseltamivir, the latter being licensed for prophylaxis treatment in the UK. Oseltamivir is marketed by Roche as Tamiflu, and this brand has become the drug of choice for governments and organizations in their preparations for a possible H5N1 pandemic. In August 2005, Roche agreed to donate three million courses of Tamiflu to the World Health Organization, to be deployed by the WHO to contain a pandemic in its region of origin."

The old and very famous H1N1, the Spanish flu, that killed between 25 and 50 million people worldwide is like H5N1 another type of avian influenza. The reason it was called Spanish flu is mainly because the pandemic received greater press attention in Spain than in the rest of the world, because Spain was not involved in the war and there was no wartime censorship. Some people say that it could be that the Spanish flu was the reason or one of the reasons to the end of World War I. More soldiers of the United States died from the Spanish flu during World War I than from the war itself.

A few days ago, this Octgober, the H1N1 genome was published in the journal, Science. Many fear that this information could be used for bioterrorism.

Ironically, Anton Dilger who was a German-American physician and the person in charge of the German biological warfare sabotage program during World War One died of Spanish flu in 1918.

How much more stupid do people need to get, to even have to explain that??? If it's a virus, antibiotics will do absolutely nothing for it, as ABs are for germs. Virii are not germs. Geez! What's the source of those quotes?

The *outside of China" disclaimer is interesting, as it's essentially the politically correct way (cute) of saying "It's rampant in China, but we can't talk about it, because they are our friends, and saving face is more important than saving lives" Cute.

Though Hong Kong threatening to close the border between them is pretty telling indication that it's far from rosy.

This means nothing unless you provide an age breakdown of the infected and fatalities.

Duck,

According to NPR's special on this yesterday most of the infected were people between 18 and 34 though this may be a result of occupational exposure and not viral behavior related.

We have duly informed the CDC of your infection and per Administration Policy it has been passed to the Defense Department for action. As soon as some troops can be freed from Iraq Duty or once Gov. Terminator can be convinced to use National Guard troops, you will be duly slaughtered...

And though it is not spelled right..

I shall consider myself pretty safe, then.
