Yurune,

I never said that this clampdown was aimed at Farangs????

However there is no denying that these clampdowns are already having and will continue to have an effect on farangs/tourists in Thailand.

How about this then? Soon I won't even be able to see it in the supermarkets, let alone buy it.

I feel very sad for Thailand and it's people. I love the place. Perhaps more than anywhere else I have lived. But Thaksin and his cronies are taking it down the toilet.

Bangkok has World Toilet Expo 2006 in the can

Published on November 22, 2005

After aspiring to be an international hub of major world businesses like tourism, fashion, medical care, auto production and the jewellery trade, Thailand now at least is striving for something closer to reality – becoming a toilet hub.

Impressed with the Public Health Ministry’s Master Plan for Public Toilet Development in Thailand, the World Toilet Organisation has announced that Thailand will host the World Toilet Expo and Forum 2006.

World Toilet Organisation founder Jack Sim said the 2nd World Toilet Expo, which will be held in Thailand from November 16 to 18, 2006 at Impact Muang Thong Thani, will establish Thailand as the hub for the quest for new ways to improve the standard of public toilet service provisions.

“We hope the event will be a catalyst and facilitate Thailand towards the progressive development and standardisation of public toilet services,” Sim said.

“Governments everywhere realise that toilets are the competitive edge of the nation,” he told a press conference.

“People who are healthy produce more,” Sim expounded. “If you have better toilets you will have more tourists,” he added.

The 1st World Toilet Expo was held in May, this year, in Shanghai, China, drawing 250 participants from 20 countries.

The Public Health Ministry will collaborate with the World Toilet Organisation, launched by Singaporean Sim in 2001, to hold the forum. The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has also pledged its support for the organisation of this event.

Experts from 35 countries will meet at the forum to brainstorm guidelines for worldwide public health standards. The expo will also feature an exhibition of the latest innovations in hygiene-related products.

Deputy Public Health Minister Anutin Charnveerakul said the public amenities were a crucial indicator of the quality of life and the level of environmental hygiene of a country. He added that they formed an important element in the Public Health Ministry’s policy of “Good Health for All Thais”.

Anutin said the ministry has drafted a blueprint of the Public Toilet Development Master Plan, focusing on 11 key public places including government offices, schools, hospitals, places of worship, parks, petrol service stations and marketplaces.

He stressed that hosting the World Toilet Expo and Forum 2006 would lend considerable impetus to the progress of public toilet standards in Thailand. At the same time, he added, the summit would boost the image of Thailand as a place where public facilities are well maintained. Last but not least, an event of such scale would highlight Thailand’s role as the venue of choice for international conferences.

Peerapong Oeusoonthornwattana, director-general of the TCEB, said the choice of Bangkok to host the World Toilet Expo and Forum 2006 represents a vote of confidence in the Public Health Ministry’s master plan, which contains a clear strategy and framework for the improvement of public facilities.

To usher in the world-class expo, the Public Health Ministry yesterday announced winners of government awards for five categories of the best public toilets in Thailand this year in the first contest of its kind in the Kingdom.

The awards were given to Maruekhathaiwan Palace in Phetchaburi province for tourist destination category, Samchai Petroleum Co. in Saraburi’s Muang district for gas station category, Suranaree Park in Nakhon Ratchasima province for public park category, Hankha Hospital in Chai Nat province for hospital category and Marywittaya School in Prachin Buri’s Muang district for school category.

I must have been having a pychic experience. That's priceless. An annual best public toilet contest as well. I'll bet some bright spark at the Ministry of Culture comes up with a Toilet Tour.

I can name the worst. The one at the back of Thermae and the one in Long Gun.
