I'm going to come right out and admit that I have no clue what the hell is going to happen from here on out, and I rather doubt that any of the rest of you really do either, or even the average Thai. However, I have a sincere hope that things will be going back to the old ways, at least so far as naughty entertainment goes. I also hope that they start cleaning up the joint with regard to pollution and trash. Yuck. It's bad enough to make a fella only want to come out at night.

self sufficiency now replaced by sufficiency. Rather more benign in it's potential ramifications.

Quote: from ThaidUp on 7:42 pm on Oct. 3, 2006 Given that the first move by the new government was to remove the restriction on alcohol sales on the King's and Queen's B-day I think it is crystal clear where this party is headed and it is to the party. I predict a new hey-day in Thailand, drinks flowing, naked asses a swinging and later closing hours.
Lifting the drinking ban in public places on a few holidays is hardly a major change for anyone other than alcoholics. I have not predicted that government will be able to crack down on P4P, even if they tried, but I don't think any of us knows what the PM meant. As far as I am concerned, there already is a hey-day for P4P in Thailand, and I don't see a need for any kind of liberalization. Since I travel to LOS from the US time zones, I am usually dead tired by midnight and I don't see any need for later closings. In fact, it is a real problem taking a TG for LT when they are not used to going to sleep until 4-6 AM, when I want to go to sleep much earlier. I suppose that those from the EU have the opposite problem.

Janitor got it right. The King has very much promoted a return to "old Thailand", a place where one works to eat,put a roof over the families head and have a little security, not to stash large amounts of money, a place where neighbours and families help each other,a moove toward a simplier way of life,,, I guess a moove away from the "greed is good" philosophy. Having seen what has happened here in Aus over the last 45 odd years, he has my full support. Money ain't everything. YMMV.

Well I am standing by my prediction and although Mr. Alan is early to bed, many others that live here do not go out until 11:00 PM. Many of the clubs (Not go-go's) are dead until 11:00 PM. I think the spill over in the streets of BKK after the last 'crackdown' was much more of a problem than the cure. With basically no supervision, the drunken hooligans we free to cause havic. Street fighting was a normal event in the wee hours of the morning as the cops went home and the bars were closed with left to street side unregulated bars. Meanwhile, the former PM was safely in bed thinking what a good job he was doing with yet another one of his crackdowns.

yes, and there is another aspect too, which is that the enforced closing hours actually encourage corruption, from clubs and bars through to 7 11's.

Quote: from Mr Alan on 5:47 am on Oct. 4, 2006 If the King has anything to do with it, I would say they definitely would like to reduce P4P in Thailand.
Interesting, so now you purport to speak for the King, and to knowhis thinking?
Quote: from China Sailor on 4:05 am on Oct. 4, 2006 Mr. Alan, you need to quit talking to your 'educated' Thai friends and start looking at the reality on the ground.
I think most of those are in his head....
Quote: from Mr Alan on 3:34 am on Oct. 4, 2006 However, it is possible that when the Prime Minister endorsed a policy of self-sufficiency and happiness over pursuit of economic growth, that he considers self-sufficiency to mean without the money provided from tourism, especially sex-tourism. He may also mean that “happiness” is not having to engage in prostitution to earn a living. The new PM seemed to suggest a change from the status quo (or why would he have said it), and currently there is a lot of P4P and “partying” in Thailand right now.
Your 'free' interpretation of statements and tendencies is pretty interesting, if not to say entertaining - but certainly pretty illustrative of thinking far removed from current events. To wit, as ThaidUp reiterated and pointed out from a prior posting, the fact that the current alcohol restrictions are being repealed, is pretty indicative of the change of the status quo the Prime Minister alluded to (albeit it needs to be said that this change was made before the PM was elected) - and that the prior status quo was not just one of economic growth (which was done by pursuing foreign investment), but also one of conservative legislation of morality (i.e. the efforts to annoy the bars and p4p industry into submission with restrictive laws) - seeing as how one of the first rulings was to remove one of the first restrictive rulings of the prior administration (the alcohol restrictions on HRH's birthdays), it stands to reasonably assume that this may indicate a trend in relaxation of those rules. It also bears noting how quickly and apparently jovially the Royal Household has supported the dropping of the alcohol ban, and that the policy of economic sufficiency does not need to have any relation or connection to relaxation of alcohol, p4p, or opening/closing times. In short, the statements of the PM in no way indicate any connection, or even allusions to restrictions in p4p or such, and you are reaching REALLY far in order to make some prediction of doom and gloom... silly, really. Party On!

I think Mr. Alan is hoping this doom and gloom comes true as to put forth his own morals of retiring early. All this late partying noise may keep him awake in his room when he trying to sleep.
In fact, it is a real problem taking a TG for LT when they are not used to going to sleep until 4-6 AM, when I want to go to sleep much earlier.
I could just imagine this sight with the TG thinking WTF, while did he LT me if he just wants to sleep. Americans Ding Dong

Hey did the Director of Internet Hygiene at the Ministry of Culture get shit canned as well as Thanksfornuttin? It seems nothing is getting blocked any more. My favorite DVD sight is now accessible from my office. http://www.vcd1.com I have not seen that nasty censorship message since the coup. Nobody tell Mr. Alan he is probably against porn as well and does want his TG staying up late to watch any of it.
