don5252, I hardly see what I wrote, as a pro-smoking rant, but rather someone seeking balance in the discussion.
4,000 is that all,, glad to hear it,, and how many toxins are in the air we breath, in the food we eat?
As far as the general health of the populace is concrned, passive breathing of cigarette smoke is a MINUTE probelm but one that is immediately pounced upon by those people that see an opportunity to rule what others are allowed to do.
Grow up.
P.S I do support public transport without smoke, I do support restaurants being non smoking and I do support having the bars with ugly girls being non smoking

don, those are trace elements, and largely irrelevant to such a discussion. Your sausages, your salads, and many other consumables (even the air you breathe) has thousands of trace elements too small to track in it - those aren't the ones directly harmful. Cigarettes have two significant substances :
- nicotine
- tar
Nicotine is an odorless, tasteless, clear product, whose only claim to fame is addiction. In fact, when RJR porduced cigarettes without nicotine in the 80s, and test marketed them, people rejected them for tasting 'horrible'. Why was that? Because, frankly, inhaling smoke into your lungs wthout a 'reward' is simply 'horrible'. In fact, you could add nicotine to turds, and people will laud the excellent nutty flavor of turds, just to get this stuff into their bodies. Since it isn't filtered by a cigarette filter, smokers receive the bulk of nicotine from their inhalations.
Tar - essentially, the black soot burnt off from and freed as smoke from burning the cigarette. Since cigarettes mostly filter it out, that substance is mostly freed as second hand smoke, and innocent bystanders inhalte the bulk of it. Fortunately, short term exposures (1-3 hours) to it clear up within 12 hours after exposure stops. Long term exposures (5-10 hours a day, daily, for example), tend to take years to restore the body to full health. A detail most smokers to not care about, as they are busy stuffing turds down their throats.
The remaining trace substances, albeit their read like a chemical warfar handbook, do little harm, beyond what the above two do.

What I am trying to point out is that there are far larger problems than cigarette smoke. When problems are identified it is usual logic to first limit the major causes rather than minute influences. Taking your line of thinking would see the world banning people hugging each other because it adds to Global warming
Hardly a significant contributer to a very large problem.
A little perspective is needed.
don5252,, why don't you take the opportunity to open a "smoke free" bar, or moove to a smoke free planet?

On a global scale, certainly - on an individual scale, not really. On an individual scale, what limits me and others from enjoying a healthy, non-polluted immediate environment is of concern -- or rather, what infringes on the enjoyment of the many, by the few needs to be limited.
I, and others, are not exposed to noxious exhaust fumes, when we elect to go to a bar, or restaurant, or club; when we elect to sit at a pleasant outdoor café on a rooftop, or the outskirts of town - that's usually when inconsiderate smokers decide to light up cigarettes, cigars or pipes (in rising levels on noxious invasiveness), in which case a single such smoker can make numerous people's visit a pain, and cause noxious and unpleasant consequences... which they naturally do not care about.

I'm quite sure that a smoke free bar would have done well, before the ban went into effect, or that it still would be, if you properly market it. Just as an low-alcohol bar would do well with a certain crowd.

AHH see the real problem finally comes to the for. As I stated before I DO THINK there should be some non-smoking bars / go=go'sfor those that find smoking annoying. o why is it that you people do not organise same, are you incapable? or do you enjoy the whinging to much

So lets hear about you anti-smokers getting yourselves organised and actually doing something about that which annoy's you and in the mean time leave us poor smokers alone. After all it is YOUR choice to enter these bars / go-go's that are filled with smoke,, YOUR CHOICE.

Don't worry, though - we've all figure it out, by now, and it's quite obvious that you're just another smoker justifying and rationalizing your habit.

We have, and we did - we anti-smokers did something about you smokers -- we changed the laws to protect us from you. Neat trick, eh?
I can understand you stressing the fact that non-smokers have a choice - let me see, that would be the choice of any bar that you do NOT frequent. Sure limits our choices, if you want to smoke in all of them. Then again, I can understand you wanting us to make a choice, seeing as how you have absolutely no choice in lighting up. Must suck to be a slave to nicotine, doesn't it?
