Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 7 April 2010 :- Tour operators see grave risks ================== Tourism operators have urged all parties to stop using the country's tourism industry as a hostage in the ongoing political conflicts. A protracted conflict would not only affect businesses and the economy, but also rural economies and lower-income workers, said tourism experts. "We (the tourism operators) have been held hostage in political standoffs on several occasions,'' said Kongkrit Hiranyakit, chairman of the Tourism Council of Thailand. "The tourism industry is one of the vital revenue drivers of this country. We must educate the Thai people that they cannot avoid feeling an impact if the tourism industry is damaged.'' Hotels and luxury malls at the Ratchaprasong intersection have seen their income plummet since last Saturday, when thousands of red-shirted, anti-government protesters seized control of what is considered the heart of Bangkok's shopping district. The government today imposed a state of emergency for Bangkok after protesters stormed the Parliament building. Mr Kongkrit said the local tourism industry is losing business opportunities when it should have been enjoying the windfall of the global economic recovery the same way its neighbours are. According to the Tourism Council of Thailand, the number of international tourist arrivals at Suvarnabhumi Airport dropped by 15% to 29,000 per day since the protests of red-shirts kicked off.

Pra, I wouldnt be too concerned, this shit is seemingly not unusual and your friends should be fine! My friends that live there (as I am sure some bro's here will attest) are not really giving it that much thought, seriously. I am not there to give first hand knowledge, but my buds dont seem worried about it at all, and actually what they are more concerned with is the 40 degree heat at the moment Chok Dee, atl

RUN!!!!!! Run as far as you can!!!!!! Or.... you can do what most tourists are doing and enjoy Bangkok whilst staying away from the protest areas. Sure you can not go to Paragon, MBK, or Siam but there are plenty of hidden gems in the city to seek out and explore. An article in Singapore's Today Freepaper this morning had an interview with a Singaporean tourist who said they had no issues, did their shopping, saw the sights they wanted, and really did not notice any protesters. And this is from a member of one of the most kiasu (fearful) people in history ...

I guess the real concern at the back of tourists' minds would be another shutdown of the airport. Once bitten.... Thailand pays dearly...

Actually, I have heard that MBK hasn't closed since the beginning of the protests. Since it's easily accessible from BTS, I would think it's no problem. But, of course, most visitors would be well advised to see some of those 'hidden gems' while there is still some of Thailand left in Bangkok... hs

I guess there is some concern developing amoung the Thais. My GIK called me last night and told me that she was going back to Prachinburi until the situation in Bangkok clears up. She told me when I come in May she will meet me in Royong or Pattaya because she doesn't like Bangkok anymore. On the other hand, she is a real sweet girl but a little flighty if you get my meaning...
