This last one in Nonthaburi, bomb blast from a room on the second story of the building, and exceptionally large, sounds more like a screwup by the makers of the bombs. This happens quite frequently.

I would speculate, though I doubt it will be published, that this was in fact the location the bombs were being made at. The location points to this, and the size of the explosion also points to this. You don't waste that much explosive to take out an apartment building that has no interest to anyone, and you don't plant the bomb in a second story room if your intention is to do the most damage.

All the bombings so far have been small explosions with either small amounts of explosive material, or grenades. This doesn't fit the pattern, or targets, from past incidences. This fits the pattern of the bomb makers screwing up, both in location, and by the size of the blast.

It looks like it is time to have another unexplained theft from one of the military armories.....lolol.

China Sailor
Gotta agree with you koolbreeze, a similar thing happened in Indonesia last month.

Dealing with explosive materials is inheitantly dangerous, look at all of the firecracker factory explosions they have had in China.

The problem is amplified when you are in a location not dedicated to the manipulation of explosives...

I guess the police did read the comments section of the Bangkok Post concerning this blast. On the front page just minutes ago my speculations have been confirmed, with the discovery of another body in the rubble, believed to be that of the bomb builder, with footage of his partner from Chiang Mai leaving the apartment a few hours earlier, and being sot by the police. His wife has commented that he is a redshirt supporter having taken part in the demonstrations in Bangkok from there beginning.

Lets hope now that the bombings in Bangkok reduce in numbers. If they could now find the grenades that are being used, then that would pretty much end these senseless acts of terrorism. They've been Russian grenades most likely coming out of Cambodia, and true to Russian reliability most are duds.

... koolbreeze, I wish it were so... don't know if you live here, but the view on the ground here is that the problem has not gone away... not by a long shot.

... the bombs are but a symptom of the problem... my fear is that attacks will increase into the next month with the hope of disrupting the November elections, and fouling another tourist season... gets the opposition trying to overthrow the government global press coverage and causes financial turmoil, putting pressure on the government.

... if bombs and bomb-makers are found and eliminated, there will always be guns, clubs and pitch forks.

They have a nice video clip running non stop in the subway with "THAILAND, ONCE IN A LIFETIME" jingle...only problem is that the viewers are either Thai who dont understand a word of it or people who are allready in Thailand and know the reality is far from the lalaland they show...

... while Thailand is politically relatively quiet since the May riots, more intensive attacks could be planned to coincide with: (i) the upcoming elections in November; or, (ii) the advent of tourist high season.
... the context in which media is reporting the continuing bombings is: (i) elections; and (ii) economy.

... both of which seem reasonable targets if you are a greedy 3rd world cock-sucker with no soul and ill political intentions.

Blasts worry MICE, tourism industries, but markets unfazed

By The Nation
Published on October 7, 2010

Recent bomb blasts such as the deadly one in Nonthaburi on Tuesday have raised little concern in the corporate sector, but have jolted the tourism industry, which is already in its high season.

Akapol Sorasuchart, president of the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), said yesterday that foreign event organisers might be scared off and look for venues elsewhere.

TCEB earlier yesterday introduced the "Believe in Thailand" campaign for next year, as part of its road map or "white paper" drawn up from issues raised by those in the Thai MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) industry in close cooperation with the bureau.

The campaign aims to boost international operators' confidence in the MICE industry here by showing that MICE in Thailand is moving forward. It will highlight the country's three strong points - its "countless business opportunities", "renowned hospitality" and "great variety of amazing tourist attractions".

Meanwhile, the Stock Exchange of Thailand continued its upward cycle, gaining 9.72 points or 1 per cent to end at 979 on turnover of Bt38 billion. Foreign investors continued to add to their portfolios, with purchases outpacing sales by Bt2.7 billion.

Pakorn Malakul Na Ayudhya, a member of the subcommittee for the Corporate Governance Centre for the Stock Exchange of Thailand, believes that despite the bombings, the situation is under control and will not erode investor confidence.

Foreign funds continue to pour into the capital and bond markets, where blue-chip prices still do not fully reflect their strong fundamentals and consistent improvement in performance, he said.

Rungruang SukkirBKijpiboon, executive vice president of Siam Commercial Bank, said the blasts would not hurt consumer spending through plastic, as credit cards are used for daily activities. He estimates that credit-card spending this year would rise slightly to Bt1 billion.

The bank would not cut interest rates to draw new credit-card customers. Lower rates would not improve payment statistics, as that depends more on an individual cardholder's spending discipline, he said.

PM warns of more blasts

Says police have clearer idea of who culprits are

Bangkok is likely to stay under threat of bomb attacks at least until next month, says Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

October marks the anniversary of several political revolts against past military and civilian governments. Mr Abhisit believes that attacks may be launched to mark these events, and that the trouble could spill over into next month.

He insisted, however, that security officials have a "clearer picture" of who is behind the attacks.

"The police have managed to find some useful links between incidents," he said yesterday.

"They now have a clearer picture of which groups they should target. Naturally, the instigators will try to eliminate the connections so that we won't be able to reach the real masterminds.

"The authorities will have to prosecute existing cases and launch proactive measures to enhance the results so that they can get at the whole network," Mr Abhisit said during a visit to the Bangkok Post.

Mr Abhisit admitted, however, that the availability of intelligence would not stop the bomb threats.

"That we know [from intelligence reports] that something will happen does not mean we know exactly where it will happen or when," he said.

He acknowledged that security officers will have to work harder at gathering evidence and preventing unrest.

He cautioned, however, against jumping to the conclusion that all the bombing incidents are politically related.

"There is more than one group of instigators on the move at the moment," Mr Abhisit said.

He denied the government had a hand in recent bomb attacks in Bangkok and nearby provinces. "The evidence shows the weapons seized [from a shophouse near Rama IV Road] on Thursday were not in use by our forces.

"Some people claim the government is looking to justify extending the emergency decree. But every time I extend the decree, I am criticised," he said.

The Nonthaburi provincial court yesterday approved warrants for the arrest of two people in connection with the deadly apartment blast on Tuesday in Nonthaburi's Bang Bua Thong.

Police sought the arrests of Amporn Jaikorn, 49, and Kasi Ditthanarat, 48, for allegedly violating the state of emergency decree.

Ms Amporn, from Chiang Mai's Hang Dong district, and Mr Kasi, of Narathiwat's Sungai Kolok district, were suspected of being involved in the blast at Saman Metta Mansion which killed four people and injured nine.

Mrs Amporn, wearing a Muslim-style dress, was captured on the apartment's surveillance camera and was identified by witnesses as a regular visitor to the room rented by Samai Wongsuwan, a suspected bomber killed in the blast.

Police have detained three other people for questioning in connection with the explosion. They were identified as Sunawin Cherdchai; Natan Hayeedueramae, the wife of Mr Kasi; and Ya Piyanara, the owner of a Toyota pickup with a Narathiwat licence plate spotted outside the building.

Pol Col Sopon Puengchoey, superintendent of Bang Bua Thong station, said the explosion is linked with at least four blasts in Bangkok and the surrounding areas.

Acting city police chief Chakthip Chaichinda said weapons seized from a room in Saphan Luang are not among those that went missing recently from an army weapons depot in Lop Buri.

An assault rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, four rocket-propelled grenades and a grenade launcher were found in the rented room on Thursday night when the owner stopped by to inspect a room abandoned by tenants.

Tenants Uthen Pa-in and Khamdee Chawaree were questioned.
