Feeling a little insecure about your choice of OS? Actually from a systems integration standpoint MS is good for queueing and Solaris is best for processing. IBM/AIX sucks any time.
However, it is not the OS but the integration tool that is the issue. MS.NET is a poor excuse for an integration tool. Tibco, Sun/SeeBeyond, Sterling, and WebLogic are far superior.
The other aspect is the proper design of the integration code. As I said, any composite application that either does not have the ability or is not coded to strip excess data from a data stream is pretty sad.
I could give you an exact reason why the computer systems failed at the new airport (based on inside information and personal experience) but then I would be labeled as a racist little shit and so it is not worth the hassle.
Let's just say that both the integration tool and the programmers were not up to snuff.
Of course that is what you get when you award the contract to the company with the biggest kickbacks...

Not insecure at all with choice of OS actually quite the contray, I see the strengths and weaknesses of both platforms. Yes it is inherit that some of the 'advantages' of a MS platform are there based on having a monopoly in the market place (especially) in the consumer market, really am I really going to try running my ati cross fire on unix, simply no. But if it's most web services or DNS I jump on aphache without a second thought!
Agree on your point on IBM, never been much of a fan, legacy like as4000 or iseries, myself, although haven't had too much to do with it over the years, so I will somewhat reserve judgement...
I think by the sounds of it 'coding' might be the issue here (.net is powerful but combersome)
China, you sound like a guy that works in the industry (as did I for a long time until recently) and know what your talking about.. I just get frustrated when people microsoft bash without reason, not so much yourself, but those who really don't know technology that well...
there are definate goods and bads about both platforms and languages, and I suppose its about utilising the best of both worlds. Unix have the monopoly of the Internet server world (approx 80%) and with good reason as does microsoft with the home user market (even though there methods of getting there maybe somewhat questionable..
Maybe we can catch up at a RT one day and discuss in more detail next time were both in BKK

Guys... doesn't really matter if MS, UNIX or Linux or whatever, if the application software that needs to handle baggage distribution has been written by unskilled programmers (aka loosers), then it doesn't really matter what platform you're running the software on.

agree seen some terrible programmers do some weird shit with code, yes doesnt matter what lang if the coder has just finished comp science degree & has no programming logic then nothing will save the build!
