Suvarnabhumi Airport security criticised
=============================

Transport Minister Thira Hawcharoen toured the new Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday and ordered that security be tightened up to prevent terrorist attacks.

Otherwise, he found the airport passable. He looked at the new airport's check-in system, luggage handling conveyors, and cargoes, and declared overall management as satisfactory.

Adm Thira praised the rapid and efficient handling of emerging problems.

Leaky roofs, glitched luggage handling conveyors and the problem of insufficient toilets had been addressed quickly and properly, he said. The cargo system is no longer a problem as Thai Airways International has successfully coped with it.

But on security, the retired admiral was troubled.

He told officials of the Airports of Thailand (AoT) to work better with security bodies, and to tighten security measures to avoid terrorist attacks, including an immediate increase in the number amount of airport officers. He said current measures are neither sufficient nor strict enough. He noted that a lot of people still visit the airport, and terrorists could easily mingle among them.

Immediately after the discussions, Suvarnabhumi Airport Director-General Somchai Sawasdiphon took a number of steps.

He dispatched more security officers to patrol the airport, and prohibited people from stopping their car to watch planes taking off and arriving in as it causes traffic congestion around the location.

I've worked with many programmers, some were amazing some were amazed.

A few were wise and programmed skillfully.

A few were interested in how much fluff they could add to impress

A few tried and tried till they finally got it right

A few lived on the phone calling for help.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 21 October 2006 :-

Deputy PM says Suvarnabhumi Airport is embarrassing : AoT ordered to stop thinking of expansion
=============================================

Deputy Prime Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula took senior Transport Ministry and airport officials to task yesterday for Suvarnabhumi airport's substandard services, which have become a big source of embarrassment for the country.

A lengthy campaign to project it as a world class airport has only brought embarrassment, he said.

Unhappy about the facilities, he has ordered Airports of Thailand (AoT) officials to stop thinking about expanding the airport and instead spend more energy and time over the next six months to make improvements to its services, according to sources at a closed-door meeting yesterday. The airport should first be worthy of praise for its services before any expansion is undertaken, he was quoted as saying.

Suvarnabhumi can currently handle 45 million passengers a year and officials hope to make it the region's biggest once the airport is fully expanded.

M.R. Pridiyathorn blamed the rush to open the airport for its poor services and stressed the need to rebuild its reputation, said the sources.

"Although the airport and its hardware are considered world class, its facilities are not. This is worrisome and everyone involved must help bring about improvements to the airport because it has been under constant criticism since the day it came into operation," said M.R. Pridiyathorn, who has already used Suvarnabhumi's services three times.

None of the senior officials attending the meeting disagreed with M.R. Pridiyathorn, who is also finance minister, and they promised to quickly get rid of the problems.

Most complaints from travellers have been about insufficient toilets, signs to direct passengers, and a shortage of meeting space, especially at the arrivals lounge.

Transport Minister Theera Haocharoen, his deputy Sansern Wongcha-um and AoT president Chotisak Asapaviriya have all admitted that had the airport's opening been delayed, these problems would not have cropped up. "It's undeniable that the problems resulted from the decision to open the airport too soon when it was not ready," said Mr Chotisak.

The opening of Suvarnabhumi was ordered by the previous government amid warnings that its facilities were not yet ready to offer standard services.

The AoT top executive said the agency had earmarked about 40 million baht to build more toilets inside and outside the terminal by the end of the year.

50 toilets will be added outside the airport building and 205 additional toilets will be built inside on the first, second and fourth floors, with some of them occupying areas now being used as the AoT offices, according to Mr Chotisak.

M.R. Pridiyathorn promised to continue a plan of the previous government to build more mass transit lines to transport commuters from residential areas outside Bangkok to the downtown area.

The previous administration picked three lines for construction _ the Red Line from Rangsit to Phaya Thai, the Violet Line from Bang Sue to Bang Yai and the Blue Line route, an expansion of the underground train from Hua Lamphong to Bang Khae and Bang Sue to Tha Phra.

I guess this is getting to be old news but I flew in on the 12th and out on the 16th. Arrival was fine although the taxi time of my United flight was long getting to the terminal. Off the plane and through the shopping area trying to get past the people who can't wait to look for a bargain was a little frustrating. Imigration was slower by the person, it seemed to me, but there were many ques so the lines were short and overall time was fast. Saw money exchange right after immigration so, with the reputation for slow baggage I figured I would wait in the short que to change money before going to get my back and save having to get money after baggage. This was pretty quick, maybe five minutes. Got to baggage and waited what seemed like quite awhile but from the airplane to waiting for baggage was only about 20 minutes. I waited for my baggage for another 20. Headed out and found driver for GP and it took him about 10 minutes to get car. Ride to GP was about 35 minutes. So, in the end, wheels down to hotel was roughly an hour and a half. Not so different than DM. Landed at about 10:50PM. Had time to get to my favorite bar and buy my lady a drink before closing and avoided the barfine. Not so bad.

Leaving was a bit less tidy. Left on Monday morning from Suk soi 11 at 8 am and got to airport in about 35 minutes which is not bad. Similar to DM. However check in was confusing. I am Star alliance gold and could not find a check in for that on Thai air. At one end Thai has business class and first class but they sent me to international check in where there was no gold check in. I checked in anyway because the lines were short and asked where I should check in and they told me the business class first class check in. If someone knows the right place please let me know.

Again lines at immigration were slow but ques were short. Walk to the gate was very long and drifting through all the shopping is a pain in the ass because so many people stop to look and you have to walk around them. Changed gate twice which required lots of walking and then ended up back at the original gate sweating and a bit stressed as by the time they were announcing the correct gate time was short. Walk ways on one concourse were ridiculously narrow and seemed poorly planned.

In short, my arrival was easier than my departure, but none of it was terrible, just a bit annoying. Air con sucks. Not may people in the airport, cooler season right now and I found the terminal quite warm. I can't imagine what it will be like in the hot season with lots of people but I expect I will find out. I will be passing through again in about 4 weeks and will update if anything is appreciably different.

I arrived at the new airport late in the evening on Oct. 27. Here's the minute-by-minute breakdown.

23.45 - Deplaned (flight from HK exactly on time)

23.57 - Cleared Immigration (only two people had been in front of me in the queue)

00.10 - Collected the second of my two checked bags (that surprised me a bit, very quick, no problems at all)

00.13 - Ordered "limo" (actually a Toyota Camry) at the AOT counter. An idiot farang who was arguing about the price delayed things a bit. He even started arguing with me because I paid 900 baht without protest. I told him I would pay 2,000 if it meant I could avoid fools like him. He didn't consider my answer to be humorous.

00.35 - "Limo" departs airport.

01.10 - Arrive at my hotel. No traffic until the lower Suk.

In short, zero problems. I can't blame the airport for an ill-behaved farang who didn't understand the difference between a metered taxi and an airport "limo."

They are not just at the airport.

The worst I have ever come across are the stupid farangs who cannot use the BTS ticket machines.

They stay in front of the machine discussing where they are going and what price they will have to pay.

Tho I must admit the worst are not western farangs.

I side steped them lately I've bought the 2 year multi card
30 Baht for the card and is valid for 2 years fron last top up. I've toped it up twice since I bought it.

Now I just bypass the Q's at the ticket machines and the S***id farangs.
