... XPChuck... man, I know what you mean... it does tug at a body... and while knocking down a full grown motorcyclists is way more challenging than picking off armadillos, they just don't BBQ up quite the same... still, I admire your adaptivity. ... suggest you knock-off a few cold 'uns to get you in the mood, and then listened to Jerry Jeff Walker's "London Homesick Blues" just as the sun is going down... that'll reduce you to blubbering. ... too bad there are no directs between BKK and McCullough County, the geometric center of Texas.

Quote: from China Sailor on 11:40 am on May 13, 2010 In reality Singapore is no different from Austin. Even in Texas's liberal stronghold there are out-of-bounds markers that you can not cross without incurring the attention of the law.... Same Same in Singapore.
... and, China Sailer... as you, I've lived and worked in both Austin and SIN... they are surely more similar to each other than ANY other city in Texas and SIN. ... but make no mistake, China Sailor, Austin is NOT as ANYwhere else in Texas, so it is a bad analogue... I loved it as a student, but the best I could do was smoking dope at my kitchen table and shooting damned bluejays off my backyard birdfeeder with a pellet pistol... but, Austin is nothing as McCullough County, Duval County, Brazos County, and on, and on, and on... any of the great rural heart of Texas in which there still survives Texas' unique cultural roots. ... the mosquito thing... yeah... can't blame the Baton Rouge bureaucrats... if I have to give up a freedom, I'd get rid of those annoying little bastards... and Mormon missionaries... yeah, I'd accept a no-nonsense solution on those... outlaw standing water in the yard... and wearing white shirts on bicycles. (... so, have you tried the Mutoid Hyper-Buster Moth Bat 480v?... it takes a wee bit more power, and you have to wear rubber boots, and welder's goggles and gloves, but knocks shit outta' even those monster moths down there... an added benefit is that the sound and flash of the arc scares shit out of pesky cats and young children throughout the neighborhood).

Magnum: "so, have you tried the Mutoid Hyper-Buster Moth Bat 480v?. " If that comes in a delicate shade of muave, I could use one in my back yard after dark. Since I'm only about 100 feet to the nearest jungle, it would come in handy. I was reared in Tom Green County so all of that sounds down home.

Well, that tends to be the case everywhere else. You are never penalized unless you are caught. I do not know of any society where people go and surrender voluntarily without even being asked. So in that sense nothing extraordinary with Singapore. The difference is that in Singapore you would be penalized (of course only if caught) for things that in other places would not be an issue... like not stopping for pedestrians at a zebra crossing, or getting up from the floor leaving and empty cup of coffee in the street. Most things about Singapore are not myths; the one that I can remember as being a one is that chewing gum is illegal, it is not.

Hey Smegs, Not stopping for a pedestrian in a Zebra Crossing is against the law in most of the US and the UK (I was ticketed in the US and cautioned in the UK). So is leaving a cup in the street.... in Texas they call that littering and the fine is USD 500. On thing that is not enforced in Singapore and will get you a ticket 9 out of 10 times in Pasadena California is jaywalking. Last week I took off across a street right in front of one of the few police cars I have seen in Singapore; the cop slowed down as to not hit me and rolled on by. Based on the direction he was going he was probably on his way for a bowl of Katong Laksa which is far more important than writing a ticket for a jaywalker . My point is that the enforcement of laws here is no more onerous than that of any other city I have lived in. BTW: The Singapore Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case regarding a drug mule who was caught and sentenced to hang.... the question being considered is if the person can prove he 'unknowingly' transported the drugs is it ethical to hang him. The Law Minister says yes but the Chief Justice is not so sure...

Magnum, Austin is not like any other city in Texas.... surely you jest.... have you considered Round Rock or Pearland (the latter having the greatest number Gays in Texas). My father retired to San Antonio, I went to uni at UT, I have lived in College Station, and my Mum's relatives have held control of Tarrent County for the last 30-odd years. I am very familiar with Texas from the Latino south to the Redneck north and one thing is true.... the only difference with living in Singapore is that you can swap your handgun for a parang, change the word Latino to Malay, the word Black to Indian, the word Westerner to Yankee, and the attitudes being expressed are Same Same.... BTW: I donno what bug zapper I have as the label is in Japanese and it was built in Henan...

Hmmm... Been a while since you were in Singapore eh Smegs? Since 2006 Chan Sek Keong has been CJ. That corresponds pretty much to the decriminalization of Homosexuality (but not Sodomy) and the initiation of 'social rehabilitation/probation' in place of custody sentences...

Was there last year. But have not lived there since 2001. It is is not the same visiting as living there. As you are there and more up to date on the local news, do you know if Yong's daughter, Ying-I, finally got married? I just googled her name, but could not find mention of a husband anywhere. She had a tough time finding suitors. Besides un-sexy, too intimidating to the taste of local men.
