CRES to block roads around Rajprasong -
Blockade starts 6 pm, troops authorised to use live ammunitions
===============================

The Centre for Resolution of Emergency Situation will completely seal off roads around the Rajprasong rally site to block more protesters from joining the rally.

The CRES announced that the complete blockade would start at 6 pm Thursday.

Phyathai Road, Phetchaburi Road, and Wireless Road would be closed to all types of transportation.

Limited access will be allowed on Rama IV Road but motorists would be checked by troops.

Residents of the sealed-off area will need to show identification documents to enter the zone.

Protesters will not be allowed to enter the zone but they will not be blocked from leaving.

The blockade was announced by CRES spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd, who said troops will be authorised to use live ammunitions at the all checkpoints around Rajprasong.

Sansern said the northern area to be affected by the sealing-off starts from Rajthevi Intersection to Phetchaburi Road, reaching the Phetchaburi Expressway Intersection.

On the southern side, the road will be blocked from Phetchaburi Intersection to Wireless Road to Wireless Road Intersection, reaching Rama IV road and Samyaek Intersection.

The Phythai Road will be entirely sealed off from Mah Boon Krong, reaching Rajthevi Intersection.

Sansern said the roads will be blocked in square shape.

"In this square blockade, the Phyathai, Phetchaburi and Wireless Road will be closed to traffic," Sansern said, adding that Rama IV Road will provide limited access to motorists.

He said all types of transportation, including buses, BTS trains and subway and passenger boasts will not be allowed to pass through the blocked area.

Sansern said residents and people working in the blocked zone would be allowed to travel through the checkpoints if they present their documents like household registrations and workers' ID cards. They will receive stickers for their vehicles to enter the zone.

He said the troops and police would close in on the rally zone and would be backed up by armoured vehicles.

"We need to use the armoured vehicles to shield troops and police from being fired at because we are confident that armed terrorists are among the protesters," Sansern said.

Sansern said troops would first try to prevent attacks by protesters by using rubber bullets but if protesters still attack the officials to try to seize weapons, the officials will need to use live ammunitions to defend themselves.

He said officials would first try to fire into the sky to intimidate attacking protesters and would aim at those with weapons.

Sansern said troops will be armed with M16 assault rifles and Travo assault rifles.

Sansern said the court approved the CRES' request for mobile phone operators to cut off phone signals in the protest zone.

He said the court allowed the phone signal blackout to be made for six hours each time for unlimited number of times until the situation improved.

Report from CNN dated Thursday 13 May 2010 :-

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- An anti-government protester was shot and killed Thursday as a tense standoff continued on the streets of Bangkok.

Gunfire rang through the streets as the situation became increasingly volatile.

Earlier, a leader of the Red Shirt movement, Seh Daeng, was shot in the head while being interviewed, according to a journalist who witnessed the shooting. He was in critical condition.

Seh Daeng was in critical condition, according to his guards with the Red Shirt protesters.

Video footage taken just after the shooting showed Seh lying on the ground, dressed in camouflage, as frantic protesters attempted to move him and get help. Seh appears to be bleeding from a head wound. Footage from the hospital showed medics covering Seh's face as he was brought in on a stretcher amid a throng of media.

Tom Fuller of the International Herald Tribune told CNN he was interviewing Seh at the time of the shooting.

Witnesses said the gunshot appeared to come from a rooftop in a corner of Bangkok's Lumpini Park, where protesters have amassed.

While it was unknown whether Thailand's military or government was behind the shooting, the government has previously made it clear it would shoot at what it called armed terrorists.

A renegade Thai general, Seh, whose full name is Maj. Gen. Kattiya Sawasdipol, is one of the Red Shirts' most radical, hard-line leaders, said CNN's Dan Rivers.

Other, more moderate leaders of the organization, who had insisted the protests were peaceful, had sought to distance themselves from him.

Explosions and gunfire were heard near the site of the protests in Bangkok. One of the explosions came just after She's shooting, according to witnesses. It was not immediately clear whether the explosion stemmed from Red Shirt retaliation for the shooting.

Renegade Thai general shot as violence erupts in Bangkok
===================================

BANGKOK: A renegade Thai general allied with "Red Shirt" anti-government protesters was shot and seriously wounded on Thursday in Bangkok, where violent clashes broke out between troops and demonstrators.

Gunshots and a series of loud explosions were heard close to the Red Shirts' sprawling encampment in the retail heart of the capital occupied by thousands of opposition protesters.

Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, a key figure in the protest movement, was shot in the head while he was giving an interview to a newspaper journalist close to the protest hub.

Another demonstrator was shot in the head in another part of the city where troops opened fire on advancing protesters, according to an AFP reporter.

Hours earlier the army had warned it would deploy snipers in the area around the rally site as part of a lockdown aimed at preventing more protesters entering.

One of Khattiya's aides told AFP by telephone from the hospital that he was believed to have been shot by a sniper, but there was no confirmation.

The dissident soldier was hit in the right temple and was undergoing an operation in intensive care, a spokesman for the official Erawan emergency centre said, adding that at least one other person was injured.

The fiery general, accused by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva of trying to prevent an end to the street demonstrations, has made no secret of encouraging the "Red Shirt" protesters to oppose a reconciliation deal.

"It's important that I'm here. Everyone is here because Seh Daeng is here," he told AFP earlier in the day during an interview within the protest site, using his own nickname.

Wearing grenade pins in his floppy jungle hat and a combat knife on his belt, Seh Daeng has been regularly seen inspecting Red Shirt guards at the protest site, which has been fortified with barricades made from razor wire, fuel-soaked tyres and sharpened bamboo spears.

The clashes came after the prime minister shelved a plan for November elections and hopes faded for a resolution to a crippling two-month crisis that has sparked periodic violence, leaving 29 people dead and 1,000 injured.

An army spokesman had said earlier that troops would surround the rally site in the heart of Bangkok with armoured vehicles and that demonstrators would be allowed to leave but not enter the area.

"Snipers will be deployed in the operation," said the spokesman, Colonel Sunsern Kaewkumnerd, after issuing a series of tough warnings to the "Red Shirt" protesters in recent weeks.

Sunsern said soldiers would be authorised to use real bullets for warning shots, self-defence and against "armed terrorists," although the government did not announce any immediate plan to forcibly disperse protesters.

An unsuccessful attempt by troops on April 10 to clear a different area in the capital's historic district sparked fierce street fighting that left 25 people dead and hundreds wounded.

Defiant Red Shirts vowed no surrender, despite the shooting of Khattiya.

"If you think the shooting of Seh Daeng will scare leaders and make them not dare to take the stage, you are wrong," one of the protest leaders, Jatuporn Prompan, said at the rally site.

"No matters what the weapons are, it means nothing to people who are calling for democracy like us. We will not leave here as losers."

Bracing for possible unrest elsewhere in the capital, the government extended a state of emergency already in place for the capital and surrounding areas to 15 more provinces.

The Reds say the government is undemocratic because it came to power in a 2008 parliamentary vote after a court ousted elected allies of their hero, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was unseated in a 2006 coup.

Abhisit announced earlier he had ditched a plan to hold elections in mid-November under a peace plan aimed at ending the tense standoff because the protesters were refusing to disperse.

"I have told security officials to restore normality as soon as possible," he said.

The mostly poor and working class Reds, who launched their campaign in mid-March for immediate elections, initially agreed to enter the process but efforts to reach a deal that would see them go home have since broken down. - AFP/de

Jatuporn: Reds will fight to the end
======================

The anti-government protesters will fight to the end and will not end the rally, United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) co-leader and opposition Puea Thai Party MP Jatuporn Prompan announced on the red-shirt stage at Bangkok's Ratchaprasong commercial district on Thursday night.

"We [the UDD protesters] will continue to rally here at Ratchaprasong.

"If the government wants to disperse us, do it tonight and don't wait till tomorrow because we'll fight to the end," opposition Puea Thai Party MP Jatuporn declared.

He said army specialist and UDD supporter, Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawadipol, also known as Seh Daeng, was now in a stable condition after he was shot in the head.

While Mr Jatuporn were giving the speech, the UDD guards were shining spotlights at nearby buildings to prevent snipers from attacking the red-shirt leaders.

Reports said some UDD core members remained inside a container behind the stage surrounded by many guards.

Was there last year. But have not lived there since 2001. It is is not the same visiting as living there.

As you are there and more up to date on the local news, do you know if Yong's daughter, Ying-I, finally got married? I just googled her name, but could not find mention of a husband anywhere. She had a tough time finding suitors. Besides un-sexy, too intimidating to the taste of local men

No idea.... on the other hand the Straits Times does not have a Society Section ...
