It looks like arrival will be easier to the taxis and Airport Buses until they get the express train running! I was looking at them building the bridge and some men were just hanging there with no supports.

When the express train is up, this should be a pretty easy transfer to Downtown BKK and the hotels. No more taxis and even no more airport bus.

Nesac calls for complete airport railway link
=================================

The National Economic and Social Advisory Council (Nesac) yesterday urged that a complete airport link be built between Bangkok's electric railways and Suvarnabhumi. Nesac's working group on infrastructure development, led by Opas Tepalakul, asked Transport Minister Theera Haocharoen to consider building a complete airport link by extending the Red Line from Rangsit to Bang Sue to connect with the Makkasan-Suvarnabhumi railway.

The ''missing link'' from Bang Sue to Makkasan is only 3.5km long.

The minister said even though he agreed with the proposal, there were some technical problems as the government had opted to start with other lines that were ready for construction.

A transport source said the ''missing link'' had been designed as an elevated section, viewed as not feasible as it passes Chitrlada Palace.

Regulations prohibit elevated structures in areas around the palace.

Since the design has not been endorsed, the ministry cannot conclude the exact cost of the short section.

Mr Opas yesterday suggested the short link be constructed underground. The ministry should start construction of the Red Line quickly, he said.

Problems delay airport gala opening
===========================

The official opening of Suvarnabhumi airport by His Majesty the King will be delayed for at least another six months as officials attempt to deal with persistent problems and bad publicity including safety, sexual harassment and complains about noise, a senior official said today.

Air Force commander Air Chief Marshal Chalit Phukbhasuk, also chairman of the committee organising the opening of the new airport, said that two major issues were raised during a meeting following complaints lodged by airport staff of sexual harassment and people living near the airport who were affected by noise problem.

Female staff at the airport, especially those working at night, have recently complained that they have been sexually harassed by construction workers.

Civil Aviation Department chief Chaisak Angkasuwan has suggested earlier that as an immediate solution to the noise problem, pilots would be asked to employ 20th century-type noise abatement procedures when approaching the airport for landing.

Flight frequency would also be better distributed to both runways to reduce noise impact in local areas.

Stressing that the problems must be totally solved before the official opening, which will be presided over by His Majesty the King, ACM Chalit said the official opening may be delayed for another six months.

The Airports of Thailand has been asked to solve the problems before next June, when officials of the International Civil Aviation Organization are due to inspect the airport before issuing an ICAO certificate.

Yikes! I must say, inside the shopping area after Customs, there are areas where light skinned, absolute foxy girls, play traditional Thai instruments all night. I kept giving the wink, but they ignored this innocent tourist. Now I know why, those construction workers!! AHH!! No wonder why there are no bathrooms too!!

Suvarnabhumi named 'New Airport of the Year'
===================================

Suvarnabhumi Airport was named the 'New Airport of the Year' in the recent excellence awards staged by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), the Sydney-based aviation consultancy group.

The award recognised the impact it has on its market, and its role in the regional aviation development, though not necessarily its efficiency.

"Impressive operating statistics have been reported almost from Day 1, which promises to raise the competitive stakes among Asia's leading hub airports," said CAPA executive chairman Peter Harbison.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 27 November 2006 :-

Taxis stage anti-police protest
=======================
About 2,500 taxi drivers protested against Rachathewa police at Suvarnabhumi Airport yesterday for cracking down on taxi drivers not running their meters and charging passengers flat rates. The protest started around 5.30pm after one taxi driver was given a ticket by police for not using the meter while bringing passengers from Pattaya to the airport in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district.

Thongchai Thongvorn, 48, a taxi driver, said the protest was being staged to demand justice from police.

The protest started inside the airport and then expanded all the way to the road outside the airport as the number of protesters steadily grew.

Suvarnabhumi Airport director Somchai Sawasdeephon said the protest was not only causing traffic problems but also inconveniencing passengers who could not find any taxis to take them to town.

Taxis taking passengers to and from the new airport are required to use the meter with an additional charge of 50 baht per trip. But many taxis violate the rule by demanding a flat rate from passengers.

The rally prompted the airport authorities to bring both sides into a meeting to help end the protest.

The drivers want police to stop ticketing them, which the police was still refusing to do at press time.

"Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 23 November 2006 :-
Suvarnabhumi named 'New Airport of the Year'"

Now that is a joke if I've ever seen one. If the goal was to rival Singapore's airport they miss the mark by a country mile.
While it is of some architecture interest, functionally
it is fundamentally flawed....Basically, it is a shopping mall that just happens to have an airport attached.
I don't know how they are going to be able to fix the problems with the new airport since the way it was designed and built the necessary changes are just not possible or would be extremely expensive to accomplish.
Bring back Don Muang!
