The Big Dry follows the Big Wet
Source: BangkokPost
The city's economy is suffering after entertainment venues are hit by declining numbers of patrons and face booze supplies that are quickly drying up

Across the clubs, pubs and tourist areas of the city the message is the same _ as beer supplies begin to dwindle, so too does the number of revellers that help keep the financial lifeblood of Bangkok pumping.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE PUNTERS GONE?: Patpong Road has far fewer visitors than usual. An empty Irish pub around Silom Road, below left. A jazz concert at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit goes ahead, but fewer people are in attendance than usual, below right.

"There's definitely a drop in revenues," said Denis Hemakom, manager of the popular Q Bar nightclub on Sukhumvit Soi 11. "Almost all the local population are gone; we're living off tourists now. I'd say [sales are] maybe 30% [of normal] overall. Our good nights are still pretty good, but our slow nights are very, very slow."

The impact of the floods on tourism and entertainment venues is no small beer to the government. Thailand is likely to lose about 15-25 billion baht in tourism revenues this year as the number of travellers drops because of the floods, according to the Kasikorn Research Centre, even if Suvarnabhumi airport, entry point for 70% of arrivals, continues to function normally.

Tourism Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa said arrivals could be up to one million below the government's target of 19 million this year. The tourism industry employs more than two million people and accounts for 6% of GDP....

From Airport to Suk, no sign of water ( it was dark though but the taxi driver told me the western news makes Thai people laugh).. The expressway looks like a parking lot though with people storing their cars up high.. Some sandbags on Soi 4 but suggets wont be needed unless we get a heavy downpour..
Glad you finally made it here! Enjoy!

... useful, yes, BK.

... but... this web site is a Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) property, and is very carefully written with a not so concealed pro-tourism bias... TAT has been struggling to control the message.

... the narrative has the distinct imprints of a foreign crisis management consultant... very effectively written in well-crafted English phraseology.

... at least the TAT has finally recognized the limits of their capabilities... too bad the rest of the Thai government's flood management team has their heads in a place I heretoforth thought was anatomically impossible.

... while the international media is doing the reality of the situation here no justice, I'd urge travellers to check resources other than Thai tourist industry advocates.

... sadly, there appears no single source offering up a reliable and comprehensive view of the situation... most of us here are compiling a picture from a variety of sources.

... WONDERING WHETHER TO COME?. NOT TO COME?

... hard to find a resource that comprehensively and reliably covers what is happening.

... much of the reporting on the floodwater here is distorted by political bias, rumors, sensationalism and just flat wrong information... a resource upon which I rely are the announcements by the MRT (Bangkok's Underground Rail), which are easily verifiable, less subjective than much of the reporting, and provide useful points of reference.

... reference the MRT system map at: http://www.bangkokmetro.co.th/web/imgcontent/Image/Routemap-110510.jpg :

(i) On Saturday (5 Nov), the MRT announced these stations are immediately threatened with closure - Chatuchak, Phaholyothin, and Lat Phrao;

(ii) On Sunday (6 Nov), the MRT added to the list - Bang Sue, Kamphaeng Phet and Petchburi (pay PARTICULAR attention to this station's proximity to Soi Cowboy) ; and,

(iii) Today, Monday (7 Nov), the MRT added - Sutthisan.

GENERALLY:

... I would describe the rising floodwaters as inexorable... incrementally inundating barrier after barrier … but, slowly … like watching a slow motion train wreck.

... prime adult entertainment zones are still dry and in full operation, although some reports of beer and liquor shortages (that falls into the unverifiable intel class).

... grocery stores suffering some shortages of canned and dried foods, and water (still), but nothing that would prevent me from coming (that intel is first hand).

... malls, restaurants, and bars throughout Sukhumvit, Silom, Sathorn still opened and serving... plenty of places to shop, eat, and drink (that intel is first hand).

... based on the government's history of freakish incompetence, my bet is that they HAVE no control of what is coming down... still billions of m3 of floodwater to BKK's north, having enveloped BKK, are now overpowering central BKK flood barriers.

... my guess is that the floodwaters will eventually inundate all of BKK (that might be 1-2 weeks out, yet)... just too much water backed-up in the floodplains above BKK... that is the opinion of non-government civil enginners and hydrologists, as well.

... however, water levels are rising slowly enough that a reasonably sober recreational whorist here would have plenty of time (as in 2-3 days) to anticipate it's arrival and de-camp for higher ground.

... higher ground could be found by either flying out of Suvarnabhumi, or driving to Pattaya (once on the toll road, you are deposited to grade-level across the Bang Pakong River, which is an entirely different watershed, and unaffected). In Pattaya last week for a few days, I found rooms still available and the nightlife vibrant.

... other recreational whorist in the field here now can report more authoritatively from between the sheets, on the bar rails, and in the ST rooms above the bars on the tactical sit-stat.

... the short of it is that I would definately come, were I a recreational whorist in need of a Thai fix; but, not pre-pay a hotel beyond 2-3 days; and, plan to de-camp with 2-3 days notice.

… (incidentally, I am reporting this from BKK).

Silom is still normal. Went to Paragon this morning and it seems as normal too. The foodcourt at Paragon does not have water.

Went to few restaurants and they dont serve all the items on the menu....but they have water.

I see that the stores have imported water now...they are from Bt35, Bt38, and Bt45 a bottle.

Big C is limited 6 bottles (Bt15/bottle).

Tesco has water from Malaysian.

Sprinkle stopped water delivering about 3 weeks ago...just found out yesterday that they were under water.

I saw Coke truck deliver this morning that had alot water bottle to deliver to their costumers.

I think the imported water for now is still expensive for the local. For us falang is OK to pay these price.

So for now, the drinking water is still OK...just have to find it and pay higher price for it.
