I agree with Mr. Alan
Quote: from Mr Alan on 10:05 am on July 20, 2003 Most likely, the Thai government, like all governments around the world these days, are in financial difficulities and just need more revenue. So they raise the fees. Probably nothing else behind the motive.
Thailand is in the need a getting more revenues in. What better way than to raise fees to those who have no voting power. The USA has does the same with all its fees and recently discussed raising many custom fees. I don't agree with the consipiracy theories here, its only Cash that's all. Haam Sup I take it you may be from CA, if so it will be cheaper to stay in Thailand despite the higher fees, because when Gray Davis gets through with Californian's to pay for his mismangment and huge deficit they won't have a pot to piss in. I am gald I got out of CA in time.

ThaidUp, Agree with you about California - werry bad things here now... Disagree (obviously) about your supposition that increased fees are a revenue producer for the gov't. I'd be interested in how long you've been in Thailand, and, other than just your intuition, how do you support your statement? haam sup

haam sup, I been living here for 1 year, coming here 3 months a year since 1990. IMHO Thailand is trying to clamp down on their image of P4P with all the recent rules, 10% excise tax, early closures, Internet censorship. But they are promoting business that bring economic and technology advances to the Kingdom. I am in the electronics business and employ several Thai's. I have no problems with VISA's and many other buisness related items. However, if you are a foreigner and trying to open a bar. Good Luck, fat chance so you have to go the gray markey approach or hook up with a Thai. Both ways are questionable such as fate of Soi 10 or many horror stories with Thai partners. I feel these clamp downs will negavitely affect the tourist trade, but I have not seen that yet. The bars are still busy as well as the MP's. Bookings at major hotels are back up to 80% since SARS and this is during the low season. So desipte all these government measures I have seen little effect on the reduction of the P4P person. I guess relatively worldwide it still a bargin and Cambodia is too much of an adventure for most to take its place for now.

I don't think that Thailand is going to be the next Japan or South Korea when it comes to either heavy industry or technology products. It would require social changes on a huge scale against great resistance. Thailand wasn't even the healthiest of the so-called mini-dragons before the crash IIRC. And let's face it, foreign investment in Thailand is really just another form of p4p. Everybody, even a juristic person, gets f_cked over here eventually.

I agree, heartily, although in some quarters, Thailand was considered the NEXT Asian Tiger, before the '97 crash. And I think the things that make Thailand charming, and such a great place to spend time, ultimately work against it becoming a first rate economic power. Thailand, populated by Thais, who seem largely content to let sanuk dominate their lives (thank The Cosmic Muffin), has survived on its ability to simultaneously resist and appease other, more modern powers, like France, England, and Holland, often at the cost of land, but never at the cost of its unique culture. The flip side is that it has NOT inherited a comprehensive system of law and has not developed the Western work and business ethic that its colonized neighbors may have. And although it is a poor country, it has never had the kind of grinding poverty that has driven the poor, in, say, China to support the Communists. ÝRather, it maintains its culture, and is able to feed its people, if not drag them into the middle class. To change that would require VJ's "social changes on a huge scale against great resistance". Mai sanuk! So far, the powers that be have been setting about regulating and curbing a lot of things that appear detrimental, but have had precious little to say on the subject of what needs to be done...after all of society's ills have been cured, they have NO plan regarding how to move forward. haam sup

You mean Birma, Laos, Combodia and/or Vietnam? ... I don't know whether they have inherited any law system or work and business ethic but even if they have ... it hasn't helped them a whole lot has it? Thailand has done far better economically over the past few decades, though the other ones are catching up fast I think.
