"You may thank the US' export of their puritanical morality for that. 'the world' admires the US, and thsu wants to emulate it, or at least, present itself in a 'US clean' manner." Oh good God. You must be joking. About all Hollywood and the American music industry releases these days is absolutely chock full of sexual content. I hope people realize that quite a large swath of the worlds people actually detests American entertainment precisely because it is so full of nudity and sexual themes (not to mention most of it is garbage). It is not America's fault that the Thai Government is making some effort to curtail the blatant in-your-face sex industry. Infact, the more I read people selfishly whining and crying about what so far really amounts to relatively cosmetic changes to the farang nightlife industry, the more I am inclined to sympathize with the entire "crackdown". Think about where all of you come from. Other than a few places such as Nevada and Amsterdam, how many Western cities and countries would tolerate such obvious prostitution and P4P. These countries are almost all democracies - you can not blame "feminism" on everything (and just for the record - I basically detest political correctness and radical feminists). The majority of people living in the West have determined that a blatant sex industry is not a good thing - why is it any shock that this trend would find its way East and eventually to Thailand. Personally, I like the freedom and excitement that Thailand's nightlife offers. But hey, change happens. A few curtailments to please the majority of the Thai public, however that majority collectively buries their heads in the sand when it comes to the Thai only P4P scene, is not going to kill anyone. Perhaps a public crackdown on nightlife in Thailand will drive some of the undesireable, obnoxious tourists away - the effect being a less visible scene with those farang in the know understanding that it is time to use a little more tact and judgement. For a long time to come, Thailand will likely be a great destination for far more than picking up whores. And even for P4P, that too will be plenty available for those that don't require rowdy, neon lit establishments full of half bored nude pole huggers some of whom occassionally squirt a frog from their nether regions. I'm not talking about American Entertainment (which is crap), I'm talking aboout American perceived 'culture', which is puritanical. When hosting a delegation middle-aged American politicians, you would not make Nana your first stop, most likely because they would want to hold a prayer breakfast, and then hang out in Church. Granted, the press corps, and their assistants can be found in NEP, but that's not the point. I mean, for crying out loud, look at our current administration - a President who believes that civil rights are only for Christians....

You may include a good portion of Americans in that group. Generally, since this entertainment is aiming for the lowest common denominator, that's usually what it hist, regardless of culture. Harry

hzink- I think you're right. I remember being lectured by an American evangelical preacher about nudity in the crap film 'Fifth Element'(IMHO). I ventured it should be called 'Filth Element' but I only pondered what would happen to this preachers attitude to nudity if he ever visited a European Art Gallery.

It is all a CIA plot to destabilize the Thai economy. They are working in conjunction with Hollywood and the television industry to export their smut and corrupt the innocent peoples of SEA. Krypto, your post came while I was working on this one and I am as tired of this bullshit as you are.

OK- An evangelical preacher, that fact that he was American is incidental. Any art gallery not just the ones in Europe. i.e. Art galleries with nudes. The mindset of any enthusiastic supporter of any religion. Muslims didn't even like the music and dancing made by the band I belong to. "Did you see us pass earlier?" "No, my religion doesn't allow it!" These types really are dangerous. The evengelical bloke just didn't like public nudity.

Quote: from Arcadius on 10:36 pm on Oct. 4, 2003 No it isn't, it's grossly OTT sensationalist drivel. At least the bits relating to BKK are. I can't speak for Pattaya, but then with all these Aryan feminazi police auxiliaries around, they're probably having a tougher time of it.
Arcadius- Do you think Stickman was selective in picking these two articles and the whole thing is OTT ? You are the experienced man on the ground. I was in Shebas in July when the police and sniffer dogs came in. Of course they never found anything since there was hardly anybody in there ! APEC is the key ? How much importance would you put on this event ?

Hermano I can't claim to be very experienced on the ground at all. I have lived here for only 16 mos, and although I'd been visiting LOS for 10 years beforehand, these trips were quite brief and sporadic. Enough to get some sense of the changes over that period though. I am only reporting what I see with my own eyes, here in Bangkok. And yes, on that basis, I would say that these articles are quite ridiculously overblown. So much so that it seems clear to me that an agenda is being pushed. If the situation were remotely like these people say, then I'd have more time for the 'it's all coming to an end' scenario. But it isn't. So I sniff collective paranoia. I don't know Stickman from Adam (others here do, I think). From his writings alone, I think his coverage of the bar scene has become so coloured by his personal odyssey from inveterate barfly to married pillar of the community that his judgment is no longer reliable. Mind you, this comes and goes - as does his disillusionment with LOS generally. It's all just one expat's point of view - and on that basis, fair enough. At least he's still 10 times better than the ghastly Trink. I have no idea whether S selects his correspondents according to their viewpoint. I will say that he seem to attract more than his fair share of doom mechants and whingers. They're not all the same, though - targets range from other expats to sex tourists, the Thai authorities, BGs and Thais in general. Not really to my taste at all. One reason I came to LOS was to get away from all this incessant moaning, angst and wannabe victimhood. Like Yurune, I have never once been stopped to have my ID checked. And although I'm in the bars quite frequently, I've never been in one when the police have turned up. I did witness a couple of shakedowns in Cowboy (in pre-crackdown days), but didn't think anything of it. There ARE drugs and underage girls in the bars, after all. APEC is important to the bigwigs, and is certainly being treated as a showcase event - there will be a full river procession with the royal barges &c. They want to make BKK look good. This & the Chuwit business are enough to explain the current energy being invested in the crackdown, but as Holy Diver says, its effects are really quite marginal. As I said before, it hasn't spoilt my own enjoyment of the GG bars (and I DO enjoy them) one iota so far. Then again, these days I'm past caring (or even noticing particularly) what the BGs are wearing or not wearing on the runway, and vaginal ping-pong balls have never been my thing.
