Quote: from JackRabbit on 3:50 pm on Feb. 3, 2004 How about giving it a load of publicity ?
This could work, with the proper angle, and given proper exposure. We know: - Chicken flu, and containing it should be the primary priority of the Thai governments. This is a priority both towards their own citizens, as well as to assure tourists that Thailand is and stays safe for them. This is an easy item that most everyone will agree with. - Resources are being, literally, wasted on this kind of morality campaign, which will do nothing to heighten morality, but instead will have a disastrous effect on local business and tourist infrastructure. - Efforts by various ministers to introduce such legislation were recently brushed off and deemed unsuitable by the Prime Minister himself. Now, all the above taken into consideration, what we all should be doing to spread the word on this: - Definitely spread word of this activism to any and all other websites we know, in order to cull more support, and get wider coverage. - Start a central signature petition (not 20 other web-sites, just one central site) on an appropriate web-site. - Combine that with *written* signature collecting from tourists and locals. This is preferably done with a ton of identical, photocopied signature collection sheets, culling name, country of origin, comment, and a signature. We need to pass these out wide and far, and label the back-side in such manner that anyone can just collect signatures, fold up the sheet, staple/scotch-tape it, slap a stamp on it, and drop it in a mailbox. All of these, again, need to go to a central receiving box. - Ideally, if every bar, and every bar girl had a couple of those on hand, we should be able to get quite a number of signatures in a short amount of time. - The written signatures need to be collected, photocopied (for filing and verification), and the copies sent on to the provincial and regional governments (hold the originals for inspection). - At the same time, any and all available news sources need to be exploited for this - print media, magazines, radio, and television - to net the effort maximum exposure. Obviously, this is a bit of work, but my question is, how likely is it that this can be made to motivate locals? Harry

Looks like tomorrow is 'D-day' ? "Following strong opposition from several ministers, a Cabinet decision on an Interior Ministry proposal to further restrict the business hours of nightspots was deferred until February 6. Deputy Interior Minister Pracha Maleenond proposed that all nightspots should operate between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight. If the resolution is approved, the new operating hours will come into effect on March 1." Source:- Bangkok Post 18 Jan 2004

part of the clampdown is a move to make entertainment venues not open until later as well. Overall the effect will be a decrease in the number of hours they are allowed to open to put a squeeze on things. Besides who likes to be told when to end the fun? The hidden away places that are open all night wont be hidden away for much longer if they are th only places left to go after closing. Then the squeeze would start on those too.

Also a curfew for youngsters now being considered, tennagers not allowed out after 10pm, but they can still dance in the gogo at 18yo, but god help them when they walk out onto the street. Can we start a thread on the 'crap' of thailand, I want to start to file it all away for future use and abuse.
