Quote: from FarangBha on 11:40 am on April 29, 2004 policies of the Yanks and Israelis and persecute/prosecute the already downtroden
Respectfully disagree with tears for anyone prosecuted for horrendous crimes against innocents, especially without accompanying tears - first and foremost - for their innocent victims. IMHO. And they are far from being all downtrodden - except perhaps mentally and ideologically. Those who are economically downtrodden are not spreading their incredible evil for more food, but for the biddings of others whose agenda is simply wresting political and economic control by ANY means. And for the totally absurd, f*cking incredibly ridiculous, moronic and bizarre whacko payoff of being given 72 virgins in their heaven for the evil of killing/mutillating women and children.

Yurune - what do you mean 'has now made itself a major target'?? Did you miss the little details prior to APEC of : hambali taking up residence in Ayuthaya, a bunch of terror-dudes hiding in LOS, the nabbing of a group of JI's with maps of BKK spots, recent note to Thai gov't of being a target like Spain left at one of their embassies, etc... Thailand has been a 'target' for at least the past year. FastMover - "Cutting down teenagers, no matter how manical, can never be rationalized." Sorry to disagree, but an armed *person* (regardless of their age), aiming to kill me is a threat no matter how you look at it, and 'cutting them down' is a pretty effective means of removing that threat. Just because we consider, in our wetsern culture, humans between 11 and 19 to be somewhat 'different' for being 'teenagers' does not mean the same rule applies in other cultures. Think outside the box, please. Hermie - "You can shoot a lot of indoctrinated kids but you cannot shoot an idea." Maybe, but it sure is a good start -- make sure you hit the mad ass mullah as well, and you're a good way towards removing the threat. Be sure to bury their bodies in pig's skin. CiaoCiao - you pretty much nailed it. While it's certainly all 'warm and fuzzy' to claim oppression and victimizations from the 'evil goverment', many folks seem to forget that truly 'downtrodden' folks do not take up arms and blow up innocent people. By the same argument that I do not consider the IRA to be 'downtrodden and victimized', I certainly do not consider muslim fundamentalists to be 'downtrodden and victimized' (and I'm not excluding Christian fundamentalists from this either). They are, for the most part, uneducated, illiterate, peasants - manipulated by far smarter religious fanatics. So, in a way, they are victims, but not of those shooting them, rather of those sending them to die. Won't make me want to keep them alive, though.

hzink, Gotta agree with you on all counts here. There are many things the U.S. can do to put it's foreign policy more in line with its Constitution (Carter actually tried to do that years ago -- he had a deep understanding of the Middle East, btw), but I don't consider driving airplanes, filled with innocent people of all nationalities and beliefs, into buildings an act of peace. The radicals in these cultures are preying on the young and the uneducated -- al Sadr in Iraq is a good example. He is murdering clerics in his own country to consolidate his powerbase, while hiding behind Islam. It works, because the people supporting him are not broadly educated. Unlike Sistani, who believes in the separation of church and State, al Sadr wants to oppress people like me -- so he is my enemy. That famous quote: "An educated middle class is necessary to sustain a democracy." Just ask the people in Iran how they feel after the new "democracy" voted in a theocracy. Very easy to legislate away freedom, very difficult to get it back. I'm a peace-nick at heart, but feel while there are no good wars, there are necessary wars. Appeasement has historically failed, as the appeased see this as a sign of weakness. - Balls

Let's be more specific, no? Death to the zealots who intentionally mutilate and murder innocent women and children.

Balls: I agree with most of your post with the exception of Carter being knowledgable on the Middle East. Carter was the prime force behind the fall of the Shah of Iran in 1978-79. On 1 January 1978, Carter visited the Shah in Tehran and convinced the Shah to relax his control of the media and give the press more freedom. The Shah acquiesed to Carter's request and the Iranian papers immediately began attacks on the Shah and the Royal family in support of Khomeini. Khomeini, by the way, had been living in exile in France and Iraq for 17 years prior to his return. One year later the Shah is gone and Khomeini is in the seat of power after a bloody revolution. Carter's administration dropped the Shah like a hot rock as their sign of appreciation. Could tell you some funny stories about all this over a drink. Interesting times, indeed. There has been no US administration that has understood the Middle East and all it's twists and turns since FDR in WWII. It has been a mystery since then and remains one to this day. It really isn't all about oil over here and blind concurrance with Ariel Sharon and his policies is NOT the answer. The above opinions are probably worth what you just paid for them.

No, let's just broaden the scope. Death to everybody. Or maybe just death to everybody that isn't enough like me. That's what it always comes back to anyway, so let's just dispense with bullsh*t trappings of religion and political theory.

expatchuck, Carter wrote an interesting book about the Middle East, forget the name now, which showed a greater understanding of the area than most policitians of his era (I think it was called The Arab Mind, or something like that -- you may remember). Unfortunately, the Shah and his family were their own undoing. They were a thoroughly corrupt bunch and very repressive (what else is new over there?). Too bad, because they didn't really start out that way. There was considerable unrest at the time and the fundamentalists capitalized on it. Since we supported the Shah (superpower politics), the common man over there saw us as the Shah's ally and their enemy. What is surprising is how far the pendulum swung then, considering the relative affluence and education level of the Iranians. It tells how deep the hatred for the Shah and his secret police was. I am reminded of an Iranian expat student I met in my college drinking years, around 1980. His comment to me, one night over beer, was "Shah was f_cked, but Ayatollah is worse!" I doubt people his age realized quite what backing the popular revolt meant. Anyway, would be interested in hearing some of those stories over a brew or two (or three, ha). Well, enough of my armchair poliitics, back to the real issues at hand on this forum, lol! - Balls
