Quote: from Broken Leg on 11:19 am on Mar. 9, 2005 I was interested in the Riceman's point. If China did try to invade what would happen, from what I understand from the Taiwanese mentality Taiwan would fight to the death with an army of around 400 000. So do any of the more militariliy knowlegable members have any thoughts on possible outcomes / scenarios on this
The US pacific command run wargame simulation on this particular scenario just about 2-3 months ago. I believe the result was China would win in 7 days. As far as the anti-cessation law, it is a response to Ah-Bien (Ah-Bien is the nickname of the current taiwan President). Ah-Bien is a polarizing figure. He is a stauch pro independent politican. He is asking for constitution amendment to have a referendum on the issue of taiwan independence by 2006. He was betting China will not invade Taiwan before the 2008 Olympic. But since his party lost the Nov,2004 parlimentary election to KMT (KMT is now pro China reunification, go figures). His tone has soften a great deal. No one will know what will happen. But does not matter what is the final result, for everyone's sake I hope there will NOT be a war.

Doing nothing before the 2008 Olympic Games could be relevant but it did not stop 'Boris' invading Afghanistan in 1979 before their 1980 games ! Unlike the 'West' the Chinese think very long term. 5, 10, 20, 25 years in the future is nothing to them?

Quote: from ABC on 1:13 am on Mar. 9, 2005 IMO: Taiwan would lose if they were invade. And they have as much democracy as China does. Their elections are fixed, so there goes the voting system. They had riots because of the last elections where the current president staged getting shot. And another point to keep in mind. Where is the so-called next "gold mine" country?? It's China. Everyone keeps talkin' about how much money can be made and how much western investments are pouring in to China. The rich in the U.S will not allow the U.S to go against China.
ABC ( assuming that means " American Born Chinese"), you are sadly mistaken about the difference between Taiwan and China. I repeat my previous challenge to Smega ( and now to you ) : Go to China and yell some thing nasty about the Communist Party and its leaders in Tiananmen Square and see if you get to come back to US. But if you go do the same thing in Taipei ( shouting nasties about Ah Bien and the DPP), you will probably be hailed as hero by the "pan-blues" ( the opposition coalitions) and get nominated to run against him on the next election. Remember when Sadam held a election a few years back ? If you don't go to vote, you will disappear the next day. And if you go to vote and not vote for him, you will disappear on the spot. He got a 97% voter turn out and he got 100% of Iraqi's votes. That's about the kind of democracy that China has today. It's a joke ! Go try it. I will even buy you a one-way ticket to Beijin (because I am confidenct you do not need the return trip portion of the ticket). BTW, if you are a second generation Chinese American, you should ask your parents what they did ( the Chinese Communists ) to your relatives and what they did to Chinese culture in the last 50+ years.

First off my statements were trying to be more of a generalization then anything else. I guess I did not do a good job of that. Of course Taiwan is suppose to be more open because they say they are a democracy. Whereas China clearly states it's communist. BUT... the point I was trying to make was that even though Taiwan says they are a Democracy, they are at times just as far away from it as China is. As per shouting things in public, I'm not sure what does that prove?? IMO: Democracy is more then freedom of speach. I'm sure I could yell stupid things in public and still be able to come back home. Why?? My Blue colored passport. And I think you've got a better chance to come back to the U.S by yelling stupid things about the chinese government, then if you attempt to yell stupid things about the Thai governement in Thailand. So, are you saying Thailand is Communist?? Which I know you are not. And.... if I open the door about things that happened in the past with my grand parents and parents, then the Japanese will be #1 on their list of bastard coutries. Which is something I've heard countless times at family gatherings. Yes, many of my relatives flew China to Taiwan, but their hatred is much stronger towards Japan then Mainland China. I'd rather enjoy my family gatherings then witness a mob uprising!! ha ha ha!!

I guess at the end of the day, we coud probably all agree that Taiwan is as far away from being the democracy they claim to be, as China is from being the communist ideal they claim to be. In retrospective, though, China differs from the communist regimes of the past, insofar as it does not appear to be on a mission to convert the world, but rather wants to maintain and protect a system that appears to work for China (which really is no different than what the US is doing as well). As someone pointed out, it's their country, and they should be able to run it as they see fit - and, definitely, more power to them if they manage to exploit the west's own greed. My primary issue lies mainly with how relatively blind countries like the US are towards the long-term plans of China, and how little they have learned from their own past. Dr. von Quack!

A lot of the Communist propaganda and rhetoric that comes from modern day China is part of the Asian "save face" thing. They don't want to admit that they were wrong about Communism, when in fact there is substantial movements to free markets. About a year ago I was coming back to the US from BKK via a connection in Seoul, and sitting next to me was a Chinese student who was going to the US to attend college. She told me that she had a degree in economics from a Chinese university and was going to do graduate work in the same subject in the US. Her education in the US was being paid for by the Chinese government (and US scholarship money). When I asked about economic theories taught in China, she told me that those were old fashioned and out-dated. Things change, but sometimes it just takes a little while.

Vietnam is also trying to follow China's steps: more open economy with some strong control of certain social aspects - does Singapore come to mind? Cuba is the one that is still stuck in the past -well, there is also North Korea.

ABC, I wouldn't be so sure about how mighty your blue (US) passport is. Pls read this before you take your next trip to China :http://www.asianweek.com/2001_04_27/news4_chinesedetainees.html As for Japanese, of course they should be hated by the older generation Chinese. The atrocity they committed in China was far worse than what the Nazi's did to the Jews. They ( the Japanese) have not even come to grips to their WWII crimes. At least the German acknowledged that what they did to the Jews were wrong. As for hatred of China; ABC, nobody hates China. China is one of the oldest and most glorious civilizations in the world. What the Chinese people of your parents's generations and the people in Taiwan hate is not mother China, it's the god damn Chinese Communists. Read up on the Cultural Revolution and better yet, go see the movie " Farewell, my concubine". You can get it in any Blockbuster Video store in the Bay Area. If you are truly interested in finding out more the difference between Taiwan and China, watch the Chinese language news channel on Channel 26 and ask your parents to translate for you or PM me. BTW< they have just found out who the gunner was who shot at Ah Bien during the last Presidential election in Taiwan.
