What would be really bad would be if it jumped to humans in different parts of the world under different mutations. This would possibly require different vaccines and different cures...

The lack of big-picture concern, and understanding is sad, but not surprising.
By the way, the article in the Chinese propaganda organ is just more of the 'We have taken all measures, and thus we are invincible. Only those nasty Mongolians and Europeans spread this disease" -- kinda crap they usually dish out.

This is true Duck,
It does smack of propaganda. However if you were to search the site back a few months you would find some quite informative articles regarding the actions being taken.
Two reasons why:
First the WHO all over the Chinese since SARS. They have basically told the Chinese if the Central Government is not more responsible, then maybe the Taiwanese should be given a seat at WHO.
Second is that the Guangdong Provencial Government has more influence these days. The last thing they want is another SARS type problem. It drives away investment and a closed border would seriously damage their economy.
That being said, there is a question of how much control Beijing has over the Western Provences these days. It seems that a lot of the local village leaders have been setting up thier own fiefdoms and they really do not care about a worldwide pandemic as long as they do not get sick...
