Maybe the Thais will continue to follow the English's lead:

Though it may take a few years to catch up...

Well, actually, considering up until this new regulation, pubs closed at 11:00pm, I always found it funny when the British complained about the 1:00am closing times

Seriously, though, aside from the Brits getting a clue, there actually is a chance that copy-cat societies might be tagging along with this British solution - particularly since they stand ot benefit from it.

While I agree that keeping the clubs and bars open longer will most likely avoid the spillout of drunks on Sukhmwit, but as a 'stay open longer' license will need to be applied for, and granted, I would see this as an additional source of revenue for the local Thai authorities.

In addition, I would structure it so that there are two licenses - one license to sell alcohol at all hours (except religious holidays and the King's birthday), and one license to stay open longer, up to 24 hours. There should be certain restrictions, like proximity to schools, temples, or freeways (or some such)

Both licenses would cost additional.

Then, local authorities can decide which establishments should not be granted a license. based on established criteria (which usually would be bribes, I'd think).

In the end, everyone would be happy - bar owners stay open longer, local authorities have a new source of income, there's less of a circus on Sukhumwit and other 'outlets' of p4p, and the cops have new rules to enforce. WooHoo!

It'll never happen.

i know on New Years the laws are relaxed and the venues stay open longer but how about Christmas? I realize the Thais have no reason to celebrate this Christian holiday themselves but do they allow for the number of farangs that do by letting the bars (soi cow, nana ect) stay open longer on the 25th?
