No, sorry. Leeds actually.
Are you in debt ? Do you miss Peter Lorimer? Can you put up with Ken Bates. Do you like women with tobacco stained teeth, greasy unwashed hair, old plastic macs and plastic white boots? Whippets and ferrets? Do you keep either or both. Do you hide ferrets in your trousers like Eric Morcombe hid pidgeons for his conjurors act ? Ferret fancier? Tetleys beer ? Then you ARE a Leeds man. Yorkshire is a hot spot for UFO sittings (Scammonden), Building Societies, people who wear 'sensible' but boring clothes, moths that fly out of wallets and my petrol company. It also has the Barnes Wallis Museum which can't be bad! I must do some research with some bar and A-go-go girls to scrutinise in detail which way they will vote. I shall give them 50 Baht for their trouble. Somebody from Leeds would give 20 Baht. Because of the influence of the Thai middle class that have the unfortunate situation of knowing me I have only one thing to say. Abhisit for PM

Boycotting the election - let's see: "To show our displeasure, and to throw you a curve ball, we will withhold the votes from our faction and our supporters, thus leaving the only people voting to be those that support you. Yeah, that'll show you." Since the cutoff for voter participation for an MP is 20% it stands to reason that this could still very much play in Thaksin's favor (even more so, in fact), as TRT only needs to muster 20% participation to make the election of their own MPs legitimate. Technically, this would be even easier than having to beat an actual vote, with a distribution similar to the last election. Yes, there is some risk as described by the article, but there is a far greater chance that Thaksin can walk away with a far greater mandate (by his own claims) than previously possible. Personally, I think he may almost have been banking on such a boycott. Sure gets interesting.

The Nation is simply another of those middle class intellectual voices that Thaksin will delight in ignoring. If the opposition parties boycott the election, do you really think Thaksin will care? On election night, after Isaan has voted for him, he will once again claim legitimacy and will tell his detractors that they had their chance to oust him, but didnt dare take him on at the ballot box. Political analysis, my arse. He doesnt care about such things and, frankly, I would imagine the boycott works increasingly in his favour. It will certainly alienate millions of voters who will feel let down that they have no electoral choice. The opposition parties are shooting themselves in the foot. Thaksin will once again be able to boast about having a massive mandate.

Politics ? People talk politics ? But this is merely an extension of economics. Politics are driven by economics. Thaksin is one rich bugger. He is likely to win but as the man said,"A week is a long time in politics!"

Dont get me started on Thaksin, he is pathetic, I realize he must have some brains to be as rich as he is but my wife and I have altercations over him all the time. She is from chang mai area and as a thai chinese lady she loves him and I cant understand how she cant see thru his facade. Remember when he wanted to buy Liverpool and fullerton, OK its cool if he buys an institution in England but he will not let a brit even own a restaurant in his country without having to disguise it as a partnership. why doesnt he help the poor with college loans etc, whatever, I think he will unfortunatly survive this and continue with Thai Rak Thai or should I say thai/chinese rak thai/chinese. BK, I hope you dont get heat for me expresing my political opinions about a his dictatorship. I am glad I am here in the states and will not have any of his cronies knocking at my door, well hopefully not! Cheers, ATL

ATL, Good post ! Well in my view anyway. If somebody could explain to me how a copper from Chiang Mai becomes a billionaire I should be grateful. Here is the latest from the ever sharp BaronBonk:- I started last time by saying that Thailand was in a state of flux and since then to say the least, things are getting worse with Wacky Tacky desperately clinging to whatever power he can hang on to. Supposedly an election will be held on April 2 nd. But there is an ongoing demonstration that promises to stay in place until WT goes and all the main opposition parties have already said they will boycott the election. WT is promising a counter demonstration, and has said maybe the election date could be discussed. To clarify, as I understand it, what a boycott will do. If less than 20 percent of the electorate in a single constituency vote, then that result is void. It needs 500 seats out of 500 to vote in a government. So if say 30/50 seats are not filled the whole parliament will be invalid and unable to govern. Nobody quite knows what happens after that!!!! So as I said at the start - flux. It is clearly still all to play for. For anyone interested in politics, this is an interesting story and well worth following. So what will happen next is anybody's guess but I can not see how WT can stay in power, at least with any credibility. The danger must be that this just goes on and on and on and everything stays in a state of limbo. The Nation are clearly not WT fans but this, from their Sunday leader, was very damning: Election or not whether he wins or loses, Thaksin appears ruined as far as his credibility and public image are concerned after going back on his word a countless number of times. He will never be regarded as a national leader who can be trusted for his integrity and honesty after the Shin Corp deal and previous corruption scandals. With a heated election campaign in the offing, people can expect more sugar-coated lies from power-hungry, self-serving politicians who prey on naive and gullible voters, as they fight for spots in the House and opportunities to enrich themselves from ill-gotten gains and taxpayers' money. I am sure you all know already, but if an election is held the bars will be closed for at least 24 hours (from 6 pm on the day before the election till the poll closes, or the results start arriving). So it may be a very dry Saturday and Sunday - and unlike Buddha days the bars are really shut.

You *do* know that *just* you simply saying it (and repeating it ad nauseam) doesn't make it so? In fact, considering your usual 'accuracy' for pretty much anything you get entusiastic about, it's almost a sure bet at this point that Thaksin will not only make it out of this election, but will further cement his political foundation and power. In fact, you (and the rest of the minority opposition) seems to continue to ignore the grass-roots foundation of Thaksin's political power - the vast majority of the poor people in the north, which vastly outnumber.... you.

Ridiculous statement. These laws regarding foreign ownership and foreigners working in Thailand have been in place, and in far stricter forms, long before Thaksin reared his political head. In fact look around you at all the foreign investment in thailand in recent years, after the economic slump the need for such investment was recognised and Thaksin has been criticised for not rescinding laws put in place at that time, which were seen as temporary measures. Look around you on the Skytrain at all the foreigners with lap tops making their way too and from their daily jobs. Not seen in days past. That's the law, not the decision of one single man who didn't make that decision anyway. Sounds like you are not that well informed.
If somebody could explain to me how a copper from Chiang Mai becomes a billionaire I should be grateful.
Try buying the book next time you are in Thailand. THAKSIN - The Business of Politics In Thailand. Silkworm Books - Pasuk Phongpaichit, Chris Baker. The Sae Khu Clan, now known as the Shinawatra family were a very well monied family without Thaksin's input. Despite the fact he tells people he came from poor roots, it's only partially true, his father was the least successful brother at the time, but still had enough to educate his family etc. Thaksin went through many businesses prior to getting his golden break, which was essentially having the nuts to invest in Telecoms at the right time. Sure corruption has helped feed his path (name me one successful businessman in Thailand that it hasn't), but you have to have actually made money in the first place to pay a bribe, and you still have to successfully create the product...no? Not much different career path to most other successful Thai businessmen, and I think you well know that....

Following on Yurune's educational effort for those that do not know, but have lots of opinions, I will expand below a bit more on Thankin's family background (I have to check my notes - I do not remember all the details). Thaksin's is 4th generation Chinese. His great grandfather, Ku Chunseng, came to Chantanaburi early in the 20th century and surprisingly (to me), even though he was a foreigner, he became the central governement tax collector for the Tamai district. He had 9 children. The first child among those 9, a male named Chiang, and two other brothers got into the silk business. Chiang started trading silk, buying it from China and Burma and selling it in Chiangmai. Later he hired local people produce Thai style silk. Since then, Shinawatra's Thai silk business has been well known. Chiang had 12 children (Thaksin's uncles and aunts). Chiang's children have done fairly well. Most of them have already transferred management of their business to their own children (Thaksin's cousins) - the 4th generation. This is what they have done: 1) Thaksin's oldest aunt owned a silk factory and a silk store somewhere. Only one son. 2) Chiang's 1st male son became a soldier and remained always with the miltary. His four sons (Thaksin's cousins) are all also soldiers. 3) Chiang's 2nd male son (for some reason I do not know) didn't join his father in business and instead went on his own. Though one of children died, he is responsible for giving another 9 cousins to Thaksin. 4) Chiang's 3rd male son (Thaksin's father) was for a long time responsible for managing all his father's businesses. Later was elected as MP for Chiang Mai and started his own business. He has 10 children (meaning Thaksin has 9 brothers/sisters) 5) The 4th male son married into a rich family. Got an engineering degree from Chulalongkorn University. Managed the operations of a bank in Chiang Mai. Was also named mayor of Chiang Mai. Most of his 8 children went into the construction business. 6) I have no info on this one. 7) Another aunt. She got a silk store in Chiang Mai. 3 children. 8) Another aunt who owns another silk store. By now you must have figured that the one that got the fortune started was the gardnfather and he gave something to each (at least a silk store to get started). Together with her youngest brother started "Crick and Crill Company," a real state business in Chiang Mai. She had two children. 9) An uncle. Studied in Germany. Was MP for Chiang Mai many terms. Was also a deputy Minister of Transportation. For many years was in charge of T. Shinawatra Thai Silk, all the stores, and the silk factory. Became rich on his own. He helped and supported with his own money his nephew Thaksin when this one went into business by himself. he has 6 children. 10) Another uncle. Studied the automobile business in Japan. He is (or was) the manager of the Chana Thai Silk factory. Has 3 children. 11) An aunt. Owns Shinawatra Trading Store and Shinawatra Design in Chiangmai. She has 3 kids. 12) Do not remember if male or female. Studied in France and marrried a french national. Owns "Shinawatra Fashion House" that produces clothes for export. I do not know how many children he/she has. One can see that by promoting Thai fashion and clothing, this government also helps most of businesses of thaksin's uncles, aunts and cousins. All together Thaksin has 11 uncles/aunts, at least 38 cousins and 9 brothers/sisters. As for his own business, Thaksin got a good start, together with his wife, in 1981 when computers were stating to become popular. he rented them to government institutions. By 1983 they represented and sold some foreign brands. But after a 1984 devaluation that business didn't go far. In 1985 he got a cable TV concession from the government and started 'International Broadcasting Corp (IBC).' In 1986 he founded 'Advanced Info Service' to sell computers to the police. By 1987 the business was doing so well that he resigned from the police. Yes! All this time he had remained a member of the police forces! Late 80s IBC won a 20 year concession to provide cable TV. This IBC would later (mid 90s) merge with another cable operator and become UBC. Thaksin sold his interest in the late 90s. Early 90s AIS got a 20 year concession from TOT to offer mobile service. Mid 90s AIS got another mobile license to operate a different technology..... Damn, I am tired of writing. Well, the rest.... just became a matter of piling million on top of million. In any case, the point is -as Yurune already said- that although Thaksin's mega-millions have come recently, the Shinawatra family at large was already a rich one before young grandson Thaksin got started.
