YEah, an italian guy who manage to cut his own head, throw his body in the river and let his head hanging on a rope in a plastic bag, and of course he leave some cryptic goodbye messages in ENGLISH
Typical farang suicide in Thailand, anyway farang who die in Thailand ALLWAY suicide, because it is a well known fact amongst Thai police that farang are stupid and that no Thai person would do something like this....so no need to investigate: dead farang = suicide (Some time surprisingly creative suicides, but farang are crazzy so this explain that!)

WRONG!
There are many known murders of farang tourists in Thailand by Thai. Usually the ones that get more press coverage involve women as the victim.

very very unlikely is:
- suicidal hanging with plastic bag pulled over the head (never heared of it, nowbody has such a NIL self-esteem)
- suicidal hanging from a bridge (never heared of it, you jump from a bridge, you don't hang from it...)
- gravity tearing off the body in the first place and then leaving the head in the bag in the noose... (never heared of it, very very unlikely...)
likely though is
- pulling a plastic bad over a soon to be victims head
- leaving a brutally killed victim in a prominent place to make an example
- blood stains telling that something happened, just not how it happened
As long as we don't know much about poor Maurizio's latest whereabouts we don't really know much...
From what we know he might have been a typical suicidal candidate running out of money. But maybe running out of money made him a good assassination candidate as well...

As discussed, I would speculate that the plastic bag was used to induce asphyxia and loss of consciousness, so as to remove fear. Asphyxia is usually associated with lightheadedness, and loss of awareness, before unconsciousness occurs - so if someone was serious about suicide, the addition of the plastic bag makes sense. All he needs to do at that point is sit on the bridge railing, slightly leaning over, until he loses consciousness.
He probably did not anticipate the decapitation, I assume.

Apparently, just because you never heard of it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen - not frequently, sure, but not unusual either - it's really just physics:
