confirming to you mbk IS open has been since day 1
only paragon and siam centre closed (different bts anyway)

That leaves me befuddled. If I am not wrong, Siam and National Stadium (MBK) stations are within kissing distance. As with MBK you can also get into Paragon mall straight from the BTS overbridge.

Yes, you are right. However, the protestors were hanging out at the Central World area. They weren't at Siam Paragon at all, and yeah, they could have easily surrounded Siam Paragon very easily. Anyway, MBK took their chances and remained open while monitoring the situation.

4 malls open today until 6 pm.

Online news: Breakingnews

Four shopping complexes took a risk by opening today even as red-shirt protestors still occupied the Ratchaprasong intersection and ignored the state of emergency declaration in Bangkok.

Siam Paragon, Siam Discovery, Siam Center and Central Chidlom opened their stores from 10 am until 6 pm, closing earlier than the usual 9 or 10 pm.

The first three malls said they would open again tomorrow from 10 am to 8 pm, but Central Chidlom will wait to monitor the situation.

Phaibul Kanokvatanawan, a senior executive vice-president of The Mall Group, said Siam Paragon was closed for six days and lost 300 million baht. Management has monitored the protests everyday and found no violence or serious incidents at the Ratchaprasong intersection.

"The protests are just a fight for a political objective. I do not think they will rob or loot, so we decided to open our shopping mall,'' he said.

But the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok is maintaining strict security even though some of the red-shirt protestors moved to block Thaicom at Lat Lum Kaew, asking for the People Channel (PTV) to be put back on the air.

The Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok announced that the hotel's security level has been escalated. Entry to the hotel is restricted to hotel guests only, in the interest of their safety. The BTS Skytrain system remains open with the adjacent Chidlom station providing direct access to the hotel.

While every other country is advising its citizens not to come to Bangkok, South Korea is the only one that has set the warning at the lowest level, simply telling its citizens to stay alert.

Tourism and credit ratings both hit by unrest

I live and work in Siam Square. My office is just a few hundred meters from the rally site. So far(!!!) the Reds haven't been more than a small annoyance as the BTS takes you right over them. in fact, so far(!!!) I have gotten 2 fridays off due to my work's concern over them.

There's nothing in the malls that have been closed you couldnt find back in farangland (with the main exception being TGs to hit on as I walk through there-so
i just go to MBK).

The issue of MBK vs Dsciovery, Paragon, and Gaysorn being closed isnt the BTS access, its that the rally is right in their faces-so sudden mob violence will easily spill into them, while MBK is across Phayathai road which has free flowing traffic, just far enough away to be ok.

The thing I keep in mind is that this Red Party that is going on here can go pear shaped in a heartbeat. so i'm not wandering down to it to see whats happening anymore

BTS service suspended

BTS authority has suspended service of all skytrain stations after red shirts leaders called for the protesters to destroy all stations.

Earlier BTS suspended only four stations near the Rajaprasong rally sites; Chidlom, Ploenchit, Rajdamri and Siam. All entrances and exits were shut down.

Red shirts leaders told the cheering crowds that BTS is servants of Amataya, and urged the protesters to go and destroyed the stations.

Guards of red shirts protesters use black plastic bags to cover security cameras of skytrain stations near Rajprasong rally sites.

Thai TV reported that red shirts leaders told the protesters to gather together, saying the government will disperse them soon.

from The Bangkok Post:-

Thaksin 'lonely', denies cancer rumours
* Published: 10/04/2010 at 12:00 AM

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra says he is in good health and is asking his supporters not to believe rumours about him being ill. "I'm doing fine now. I'm physically strong, just feel a bit lonely which is normal for a working man like me," Thaksin said on his Twitter page yesterday.

Thaksin posted the messages after rumours spread yesterday morning that he had been admitted to hospital after going into "shock" during a chemotherapy session. The rumour surfaced after Thaksin skipped his almost daily phone-in to red shirt supporters back in Thailand for five days in a row.

Political talk show hosts at the yellow shirts' ASTV channel also quoted an anonymous doctor based in the UAE as saying that Thaksin was in an intensive care unit. "The rumour is ridiculous. I just underwent a medical checkup in Russia on March 30 and doctors found nothing wrong with me except that I have too much fat [in my blood]," Thaksin said.

Thaksin said he opted to suspend his phone-ins to red shirt supporters this week to avoid creating misunderstandings among the public that the red shirt people are fighting for his cause. "I don't want people to misinterpret the aims of true democratic fighters who have come out to fight for justice," Thaksin said.

He said he will travel to Saudi Arabia today upon an invitation from a prince, who has persuaded him to invest in a town project and an agribusiness centre there.

Noppadon Pattama, Thaksin's legal adviser, yesterday also denied rumours that the ousted prime minister had cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. They talked yesterday morning by phone.

Mr Noppadon also denied that the UAE government has told Thaksin to stop using the country as a base for political activities, but admitted Thaksin was cautious about the issue as he wanted Dubai to be his residence.

Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Panich Vikitsreth said that, to his knowledge, Thaksin was suffering only from a cold and was not admitted to an ICU in Dubai. Mr Panich said the former prime minister would leave Dubai today for four days, but he was not sure about the destination.
