PL, you've done a great service to all of the members and taken a great deal of time to help educate us on the new airport. I have taken information from this thread and sent notes to various Thai government orginazations complaining and lobbying for improvments.

The vast majority of us realize your intent was strickly one of passing on information. I thank you for your time and efforts.

The new airport has it's areas of opportunity and you had nothing to do with them, you just reported the facts.

Again, Thanks so very much for your time and efforts in passing on timely information on the new airport.

In and out of the new airport a couple of times now, my 2 Bhat worth.

1. International arrival on a 777. Yes we parked on the far side of the moon, rode many moving walkways to a closed immigations area. Thanks to information from this thread I knew to go a few more meters to the next immigration hall. Some passangers were lost and temporarely strandard when they found the first hall closed. One note, Most major US airports have NO moving walkways for international arrivals and I've had to walk past many closed and packed immigration halls before I got to one that was open and packed. New airport gets a passing grade here.

Baggage handling - always got my luggage, not as fast as some places but got it. Had seating next to the carousel to wait. New airport gets a passing grade here.

Finding a taxi - getting past the limo leachers - Not good. If I had not been forwarned I may not have know to go down one floor. Needs Improvement with simple signs.

Money changing - Good and simple

Getting to Sukumvit area - not any worse than the old airport.

Infrastructure around the new airport - failure. no rail transport and only one hotel close by.

New airport has lots of dirty windows.

International departure on BKK airline left a lot to be desired. I was disappointed and sent two emails to BKK air which turned out to be a waste of time, they don't care.

I had business class ticket, their business class lounge is a shared facility that was very poorly marked and difficult to find. The staff around the gate was over worked and in no mood to answer questions, they were running and running and stressed out. The VIP bus for our transport to the aircraft was way too small for the number of business class passangers. Some stood for over 20 minutes before we left the gate area heading to the plane. The flight was delayed for almost an hour but the weather was fine. The flight was smooth, inflight staff fine and the meal was excellent. The Russian beauty who sat next to me stunk, no personal hygine habits.

Return from Cambo. Landed and taxied around the airport did about a 300' circle to park. I think we passed Pattaya on the way. We parked and loaded on a bus that did got through Pattaya on the was to unloading us. The good point they dropped us off just a short 2 minute walk from Immigrations. Our luggage pick up took about 15 minutes, getting out was quick and my driver to Pattaya was waiting for me right where he said he would be.

The parking garage was a decent walk but not that bad. The road way into and out of the airport was good.

The toilets are few and small but they are there, functional and clean.

I didn't like the lack of public seating between the passport control check and the gates. They really do neeed more seating.

Did not like the lack of "less expensive" places to eat. Everything I saw was expensive.

The building AC didn't impress me but for right now I have to give it a minimal passing grade. When the hot and wet season hits we'll find out just how good it is.

Departure - The signs outside to tell you which door is supposed to lead to your airline area are too small. Not Good. There were plenty of luggage carts available - Good. finding the BKK airline ticket counter was easy but Korea Air desk was a problem. The marked door was off by two areas and I finally found an information girl who helped. Not Good.

Lounges are few and far between. the vast majority are not opened yet.

Saw lots of construction workers still milling about.

The airport is built on a swamp. I saw lots of ponds, I wonder if the place is going to slowly settle and if it does the result may be disasterous.

Geeze, just 2 Bhat worth

Nothing has changed since the opening..... pass through the airport at least twice monthly and it is still the same impersonal piece of junk it was when it opened.
I know one has to accept progress, technology and all.... but this Airport has nothing that gives you a feeling you are in Thailand (except for Thai Staff).

I would have preferred more of a Thai Style Airport (at least for Domestic flights)

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 21 December 2006 :-

Don Muang airport could reopen to ease congestion
======================================
Don Muang airport, which closed in late September after 92 years of service, may return as Bangkok's second airport because Suvarnabhumi airport is now congested. Deputy Transport Minister Sansern Wongcha-um said passenger and airline inconvenience at Suvarnabhumi airport had prompted airline operators to demand Don Muang airport be reopened, and revive a plan to use both Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports to serve Bangkok's air traffic.

Yesterday, he chaired a meeting with current and former executives of Airports of Thailand (AoT) and representatives of the Civil Aviation Department, low-cost airlines and the Airline Operators Committee.

The government of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra changed the dual-airport policy to a single-airport policy.

Mr Sansern said AoT would now review its Suvarnabhumi master plan. He believes AoT proposed expanding Suvarnabhumi without considering its actual physical limitations. AoT planned additional land acquisition and as many as six runways for Suvarnabhumi, he said.

Mr Sansern said working groups would consider the re-use of Don Muang airport, review the Suvarnabhumi master plan and tackle passenger inconvenience at Suvarnabhumi.

An AoT source said a prompt decision on reopening Don Muang could allow Bangkok to serve heavy traffic during the upcoming New Year and Chinese New Year festivals, as Suvarnabhumi airport could not handle any more flights. Its peak traffic stands at 76 flights an hour.

Tassapon Bijleveld, chief executive of low-cost Thai AirAsia, said Suvarnabhumi airport had neither office space for his airline nor cafeteria for airline staff.

''Today the government has admitted that Suvarnabhumi is congested and has reached full capacity since its opening just three months ago,'' he said.

Re-using Don Muang would relieve traffic at Suvarnabhumi, and could allow traffic of low-cost airlines to grow 20-30% annually in the next 4-5 years.

Udom Tantiprasongchai, chief executive of Orient Thai Airlines which runs the One-Two-Go budget carrier, said Don Muang should be reopened to serve domestic flights by low-cost airlines.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 21 December 2006 :-

Airport problems a safety risk, says report
================================
Suvarnabhumi Airport is beset with problems, some of which threaten the safety of airline passengers, a recent study that will be presented to the Airports of Thailand (AoT) board today has found. The report, conducted by an AoT working group headed by board member Yodyiam Theptranont, said the faults were due to a mixture of substandard construction, poor management and manipulation of the designs and materials.

Deputy Transport Minister Sansern Wongcha-um said the AoT would also listen to the findings of representatives of airlines using the airport.

The AoT board will discuss all the findings with the airport's designers and contractors next Tuesday and try to come up with a range of solutions.

Mr Sansern said his ministry will put together another working group to help AoT solve problems at the new airport.

Mr Yodyiam's working group reports that Suvarnabhumi airport lacks ''as-built'' drawings, of what was actually built, rather than what was planned.

The report says up-to-date and accurate plans of the airport's actual construction and layout are essential for future checks and maintenance.

Without an as-built drawing, building maintenance would be difficult and, in case of emergencies, people's lives would be put at risk, the report says.

Apart from the risk, visitors' convenience has also been heavily compromised with the airport already open for business despite being incomplete.

The working group has put together an extremely lengthy list of complaints and deficiencies along with a list of recommendations to fix the problems.

The long list of complaints and problems includes a lack of toilets in passenger terminals which are also inadequately equipped.

The working group concludes that many passages are too narrow and waiting areas for the reception of arrivals are too small due to the expanded space for shops. Concourses are also too remote, forcing passengers to walk too far.

Some corners of the airport are hot due to inadequate air-conditioning and possibly substandard glass roofing, which in some places has caused leaks. The working group recommends the replacement of roofs or installation of sunshades.

Revolving glass doors are also inconvenient and impractical, the report says. Ten out of 26 revolving doors have been damaged and are dangerous as they are not fitted with safety glass.

The working group recommends two layers of sliding doors to replace the current revolving doors.

The terminal structures and floors are dirty and inconsistently coloured due to substandard construction and ineffective inspection, it says. Uneven floors can cause accidents and joints between floor slabs are wide enough to catch trolley wheels. The glass walls are also dirty because cleaners cannot reach all the panels.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Sunday 24 December 2006 :-

Holiday security beefed up at Suvarnabhumi Airport
======================================
Security measures at the new Suvarnabhumi airport will be increased as it is expected that the passenger load will rise by about 10 per cent during the New Year holiday, according to airport director Somchai Sawasdiphol.

The current daily average passenger flow is about 100,000 persons while it is forecast that the overall number will rise 10 per cent from December 28 to January 3 as more people travel during the New Year holiday weekend, Mr Somchai announced.

Airport officials increased the number of security staff assigned to the terminal and other areas during the peak New Year's holiday, the airport chief said, while additional police officers and Highway Department staff would also patrol the facility and help direct traffic near the airport, he said.

To demonstrate the professionalism of security measures in place at the airport, Mr. Somchai said a security officer recently found a wallet containing over 8,000 British pounds (some Bt300,000) in the passenger terminal. Security staff immediately informed the tourist police who located the owner, a British tourist. The wallet was immediately returned to the appreciative owner.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 25 December 2006 :-

New airport faces partial shutdown - Mistakes, graft found in almost all contracts
================================================
Poor construction at Suvarnabhumi may force parts of the new airport to be shut down for repairs. This would open the way for the recently abandoned Don Muang airport to be re-opened to serve Bangkok's air traffic needs.

Deputy Transport Minister Sansern Wongcha-um said yesterday that following a recent report on the problems facing Suvarnabhumi airport, it was likely that part of the new facility would have to be closed and Don Muang airport would pick up the slack.

Some people had suggested the airport, open less than three months, be completely closed for a revamp, with flights being redirected to Don Muang until the improvements are completed, Mr Sansern said. He was opposed to that. Trying to move everything back to Don Muang would cause chaos.

The Council for Democratic Reform _ now the Council for National Security _ asked about the readiness of Suvarnabhumi airport just after the Sept 19 coup, but executives of the Airports of Thailand (AoT) had insisted the airport was ready for the scheduled Sept 28 opening.

Opening the airport before it was completed had inevitably led to problems. If the opening had been delayed to allow work to be finished properly, the airport would have started on a more solid footing.

The new AoT board appointed after the coup has discovered physical and managerial problems at Suvarnabhumi airport.

Board member Yodyiam Theptranont, who heads a sub-panel investigating the problems, said the repairs would take a long time. He could not give a timeframe.

Mr Yodyiam's report to the AoT board outlined a lengthy list of complaints and deficiencies, along with a list of recommendations on fixing the problems.

The report attributed the faults to substandard construction, poor management and manipulation of designs and materials.

The report said the airport's information technology facilities were incomplete and the upper floors of the car park building have no drains, causing rain water to flow into elevator shafts.

Over 1,000 lamps had already burned out and not been replaced.

Mr Yodyiam said AoT lacked an official with direct responsibility for the airport's construction, which had posed an obstacle in getting swift repairs.

Another AoT board member, Tortrakul Yomnak, said many areas need repairs and a partial closure was likely.

Chaisak Angsuwan, director-general of the Civil Aviation Department, said that due to the persistent problems, the department could not issue a permanent licence for Suvarnabhumi airport.

It would, however, extend an interim aerodrome certificate for the airport for another six months in January, he said.

Mr Chaisak said the airport needed to meet all physical and operational requirements before it could be given a permanent certificate.

There were many cracks in the airport's taxiways, some serious and some not, and repairs would be time-consuming, he said. Many operations staff also have no expertise in using their equipment.

Adm Bannawit Kengrian, chairman of the National Legislative Assembly's committee on Suvarnabhumi airport, said his panel had discovered mistakes and irregularities in almost all the airport's contracts. Names of those believed responsible would be announced in two weeks.

Specifications in some contracts had been distorted, he said.

Salaries paid executives of the Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel were unusually high. Despite its claimed five-star status, the hotel had plywood doors.

An inexperienced contractor operated transformers that supply power to visiting aircraft and six transformers had burnt out. The cost of digging ditches around the airport was inflated to three billion baht and hiring security guards to five billion baht.

Any contracts where corruption was found would be scrapped, he said
